MARTIN V. B. DUFFY
CO. E
67 ILL INF

Fidelia Frances Rhea, also known as Delia, was born about 1848 in Illinois.  She was the daughter of Sarah Cameron and Stokely P. Rhea.

Sarah Cameron Rhea died when Fidelia was not quite 2 years old, and her brother, Calvin, was about 5.  Fidelia apparently was raised by her grandparents, John and Elizabeth Lee Cameron, in Hancock Township, Hancock County, Illinois.

She married Martin V. B. Duffie about January 23, 1867, in Hancock County.

Martin was born in or near Hagerstown, Washington County, Maryland, about 1841, the son of William Duffie and Elizabeth Dusang, of Pennsylvania and Maryland, respectively.  The family came to Hancock County in 1855 and lived in Fountain Green Township.

William and his brother, Anthony, who also migrated to Hancock County, spelled their surname differently.  The records for Martin, after he left home, are mixed:

Enlistment in the service - Duffy
First marriage license - Duffie
Second marriage license - Duffy
1870, 1880 censuses - Duffie
1890 pension application - Duffie
1900, 1910 censuses - Duffie
1920 census, when he was living at the Soldier and Sailor's Home - Duffy
Death certificate - Duffie
Government issued tombstone - Duffy

Martin was first married about December 17, 1863, in Hancock County, Illinois, to a young lady whose name was something like Anna F. A. Lumbardo.  (That surname spelling is non-existent in U.S. census records before 1880 and there are only 15 listings of Lumbardo on Social Security death records.)

An image of the pension application card. Not quite four years later Martin and Fidelia were married and they set up housekeeping in Fountain Green Township.  They later moved to Sciota, Sciota Township, McDonough County, Illinois, and spent most of their married life there.

On September 18, 1890, Martin filed for a Union Army pension which was subsequently granted.

Fidelia died November 3, 1917, in Limestone Township, Peoria County, Illinois.  At some point after her death, Martin took up residence in the Illinois Soldiers and Sailors' Home at Quincy, Adams County, Illinois.  He apparently died there on September 26, 1920.  He was laid to rest at Glade City Cemetery, Blandinsville, McDonough County.  There is a weak indication that Fidelia was also buried there.

The children of Fidelia Rhea and Martin Duffie were:

i. Schuyler Colfax Duffie, born about 1868, probably in Fountain Green Township.  He died October 30, 1948, in Canton, Fulton County, Illinois.

ii. Laura Duffie, born February 4, 1872.  She died May 21, 1894, and was buried at Glade City Cemetery.

iii. There may have been a third Duffie child.  The 1900 census reported that Fidelia was the mother of 3 children, 1 living.  In 1910, the entry reported she was the mother of 2 children, 1 living.
