WILLIAM DYE 1820-1901
SUSANNAH CAMERON 1820-1908

Susannah Cameron, also known as Susan, was born in White County, Tennessee.  The date of birth inscribed on her tombstone is May 13, 1819, which may or not be correct.  For a complete discussion of this subject, follow this link to Susannah's parents, John and Elizabeth Lee Cameron.

The Camerons were among the early settlers in Hancock County, Illinois, arriving sometime prior to 1840.  They brought with them a devotion to the Christian faith.  Susannah apparently followed the religious teachings of her parents; she worshipped with them at the Berea Christian Church.

Susannah married William Dye on March 25, 1841, in Hancock County, Illinois.

William Dye was born in 1820 in Ohio.  His tombstone inscription provides a birth date of January 10, other written sources list varying dates.

William's parents were James Madison Dye and Barbara Livengood.  The elder Dye was the central figure in an infamous murder case that ignited the interest of both Hancock and McDonough County residents.  See: Stokely P. Rhea (husband of Susannah Cameron's sister, Sarah)

A small image of the Dye - Cameron tombstone. After spending many years in Hancock County, Illinois, Susannah and William moved on to Adair County, Missouri, where they spent their last days.  William died March 10, 1901, and was buried in Adair County at Bullion Cemetery.  Susannah may have died November 8, 1908, but we have no unclouded evidence of that; no date of death was inscribed on her tombstone.

The known children of Susannah Cameron and William Dye, all born in Hancock County, Illinois, were:

i. A small image of Nancy Dye Geoghegan's tombstone.Nancy Ann Dye, born May 19, 1842.  She married John James Geoghegan about October 2, 1862, in Hancock County, Illinois. He was born July 16, 1835, died April 18, 1894.  Nancy died April 11, 1927.  Both are buried at Bullion Cemetery, Adair County, Missouri.

ii. Sarah E. Dye, born about 1844.

iii. Isabel Dye, born about 1846.

iv. Barbara Dye, born about 1848.

vii. Leander J. Dye, also known as Lee, born March 16, 1855, died April 6, 1931, at Kirksville, Adair County.  He married Elizabeth Rainier in Adair County on June 10, 1880.  According to her death certificate, Elizabeth was the daughter of John Rainier and Jane Clifford and was born May 15, 1863, in Akron, Ohio; May 20, 1863, is the date of birth reportedly inscribed on her tombstone.  Elizabeth died September 8, 1952, in Kirksville.  Both she and Lee were buried at Highland Park Cemetery, Adair County.

viii. James B. Dye, born March 13, 1857.  He died July 16, 1936. He married Emma Margaret Mikel on December 24, 1882, in Adair County.  She was born May 5, 1865, died September 16, 1961.  They were both buried at Highland Park Cemetery.

ix. John C. Dye, born in 1859.  While his death certificate was prepared with May 13, 1861, as his birthday (John's wife was the informant), the 1860, 1870 and 1900 censuses (in particular) support 1859 as the year he was born.  Also, 1859 is the year reportedly inscribed on his tombstone at East Center Cemetery, Adair County.  He died April 16, 1931, in Benton Township, Adair County.

x. Minnie Dye, born November 13, 1862, in St. Mary's Township, Hancock County, Illinois. She died after April 15, 1910.

Warren W Dye, 6, male, born IL

At face value, the four youngest Dye sons would seem to have been living in the home of Esta and Hannah H. Whaley Bidwell, whose household was recorded on census page 357.  However, this confusion arises only because the census pages appear to have been out of proper order when the page numbers were stamped on them.

1900 Missouri Census, Adair Co., West Salt River Twp. ED 15, page 190A
enumerated June 1, 1900, dwelling #10
This is one of the most interesting census listings we've seen, out of many hundreds viewed. Most of the adult children are included when it's fairly clear they weren't actually living in the household, hence the entries showing each of them married for an unknown length of time.  We are grateful to the erring enumerator since we can compare the birth information to that which we hope to find for each child still living at the time.  Somewhat puzzling is that Susan's entry reported that she was the mother of 10 children, 9 living.  Only 8 entries for children follow.

Dye, William, head, white, male, Jan 1820, 80, married for 60 years, born OH, both parents born PA, farmer, months not employed - 0; could read, write and speak English, owned his farm home free of mortgage, farm schedule 10

Minnie, daughter, white, female, Nov 1861 [or 62, hard to read], 38, married, # of years - Un [or Ukn]; mother of 0 children, born IL, father born OH, mother born TN, [no occupation entry, but then months not employed - 2], could read, write and speak English
