Colchester Woman Killed By Car Tuesday

Inquest Slated Friday Night

Mrs. Mary Burrow, 71, of Colchester, was killed instantly about 7 p. m. Tuesday when she was struck by a car driven by Don Johnson of Macomb rural route.

Johnson was driving west on route 136, two blocks inside the town limits.  Mrs. Burrow went across the pavement in front of the car on the way to see a neighbor and was struck by the left front fender.  Johnson pulled to the right in an attempt to miss the woman and struck a number of mail boxes.

Mrs. Burrow suffered a broken neck, lacerations on the head and face, and other body injuries. McDonough County Coroner Ray Louderman will conduct an inquest in the Jones funeral home in Colchester Friday at 7 p. m.

Mrs. Burrow is survived by her widower; two sons, Armon at home and Gaylord of Gary, Ind., and a daughter, Mrs. Juanita Baumgardner of Sterling.


Lyman W. Burrow, 74, of Colchester, Dies

Lyman W. Burrow, 74, of Colchester died yesterday afternoon at the Phelps Hospital following a long illness.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Jones Mortuary with the Rev. Harry Shewhart officiating.  Burial will be in Mt. Auburn Cemetery.

Mr. Burrow was born Oct. 6, 1883 in Hancock County to William and Rachel Dye Burrow.
He lived in Hancock county and Colchester all his life.  Mr. Burrow was a retired school teacher, and was employed as a railroad mail clerk and cement finisher.

He was married May 15, 1904 to Mary Morgan, deceased.

Surviving are three children, Armond Burrow, Colchester; Mrs. Juanita Baumgardner, Sterling, Ill., and Gaylord Burrow, Minneapolis, Minn., one brother, Maurice Burrow, living in California, and three sisters, Mrs. Bertha Hainline, Cambridge, Ia., Mrs. Eva Hungate, Ames, Ia., and Mrs. Bessie Olson, Spokane, Wash.  Three grandchildren also survive.  A brother and a sister are deceased*.

Friends may call at the chapel.  The family will meet friends this evening at the chapel.


*This probably refers to James P. Burrow and Parielee Burrow Peck;  infant brother Taylor S. Burrow died in 1877.

Mrs. E. E. Baumgardner, fifty-nine, of Sterling, a former Colchester resident, died in Sterling Saturday.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a. m. Tuesday at the Melvin Funeral Home in Sterling. Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Oakwood Cemetery, in Macomb.  The Rev. Lloyd O. Coleman will conduct the services.

Mrs. Baumgardner was born Juanita I. Burrow on the 17th of August 1904, in Colchester, a daughter of Lyman and Mary Morgan Burrow.  She was educated in Colchester schools and graduated from the Holmes Hospital School of Nursing in Macomb in 1924.  She was married to Edward E. Baumgardner in Macomb on the 25th of December 1924.  She moved to Sterling in 1941 and has been employed by the Community General Hospital for the past fifteen years.  She was a member of the First Methodist Church of Sterling.

She is survived by her husband; a son, Captain Max Baumgardner, U.S. Air Force, of Sault St. Marie, Michigan; two brothers, Gaylord Burrow of Minneapolis, Minnesota and Armond Burrow of Colchester; and one granddaughter.

Her parents and a brother died previously.
 

ii. Gaylord Burrow, born August 26, 1905, died April 24, 1984, in Ramsey County, Minnesota. He married Marguerite Jackson (born May 8, 1909, in Hancock Township, Hancock County, Illinois, died July 9, 1974, in Hennepin County, Minnesota).  Marguerite was the daughter of Orville Jackson and Laura Ethel Pittenger.
 
iii. Infant Son Burrow, born December 21, 1911, died December 29, 1911, burial at Mt. Auburn Cemetery, Colchester.
 
iv. Armond Burrow, born about 1913.  He died after April 18, 1964.
