Marriage documents
Census listings 1850, 1860

There is a Botetourt County, Virginia, marriage record for an Albert Obenchain and Susan Fluke, dated May 15, 1847.   It appears that this was the same Albert who married Delphine three years later.  No information about this marriage or Susan's fate was passed down through Albert and Delphine's children.  It was surely Delphine who arrived in Texas with Albert, reportedly in 1853, with their two little children, Charles and Virginia.

Delphine & Alfred's Children

In the 1900 census, it was reported that Delphine (named therein as Belle) was the mother of eight children, only three of whom were living.  We can document seven of the eight children from census records: five by Albert and two by second husband, William Higgins.  Children known to be alive in 1900 were Albertine Bertha Obenchain East and Maie Obenchain.

Census transciptions 1860-1870

There is a Parker County marriage record for C. E. Obenchain and Tessie Froman, dated October 6, 1895.

In 1900 Tessie Obenchain was living with her widowed mother in Justice Precinct 7, Parker County.  She had a daughter, Ruby M. Obenchain, 4 years old.  Tessie was reported as a widow, but that is not reliable - often times divorced persons reported themselves as widowed.

By 1910 Tessie had remarried and was living with her second husband, Pleas S. Lynn, in Jack County, adjacent to Parker County.  Ruby M. Obenchain, 14, stepdaughter to Pleas, was a member of the household, born in Texas, father born in "West Virginia."

We have found later listings for a Charles Obenchain and a Charles E. Obenchain, but cannot confirm that those listings were for this Obenchain son, nor can we absolutely assert that the man whom Tessie married was this same Obenchain son.

Census transcriptions

According to second great-grandniece, Julie Martin, this daughter was called Maie by family members. Based on the 1870 Census, her first name may have been Sallie, or that may have been a nickname.

Julius' surname was spelled Schonfield on the marriage record and his death certificate, Schonfeld in census records.  Maie's death certificate was prepared with the surname Schonfeld.

Maie's niece, Mary East Pipkin, was the informant for her death certificate and stated that Maie was born February 2, 1859.  Only one census record supports that year of birth and in that year, 1870, the family was counted twice.  One 1870 listing showed Maie at age 9, the other at age 11.

1860 census - Maie was not listed with the family
1870 census - age 9 and age 11
1880 census - age 19
1900 census - age 37, born Feb 1862
1910 census - age 43
1920 census - age 52
1930 census - age 65
