Family datat below data pertaining to Joshua and Mabel (Head) Whitney, the parents of Emma Jane (Whitney) Duncan.

Rather than re-state or republish this particular Whitney lineage, which is online at The Whitney Research Group website, I have attempted to verify the facts and correct any errors using census data and primary sources.

The Whitney Genealogy of the Brothers, Judge Joshua and Gen. William Whitney of Binghamton, N.Y.; History gathered by Hallam S. Whitney, Cleveland, Ohio and Compiled by Dr. F. E. Weeks Kipton, Ohio, 1932, shows Joshua Whitney as the son of John R. Whitney  born in 1786 in Hillsdale, New York, and his first wife Catherine Schoonover.  According to the Whitney Genealogy, John R. Whitney apparently moved to Lorain County, Ohio in about 1836.  He is said to have served in the War of 1812 and died in 1857 at the age of 71.

His name appears on page 137 of the transcription of Camden Cemetery in Camden Township, Lorain County, Ohio (the transcription was online and has since been removed).  John R. Whitney appeared in the 1850 Federal Census of Wellington Township, Lorain County, Ohio, living with his 2nd wife, enumerated on 14 November:

John R. Whitney's, son, Joshua Whitney first appears in the 1850 Federal Census in Hector Township, Potter County, Pennsylvania, on page 123:

#11 Joshua Whitney    31     m     Farmer     800     NY
      Mahetabel            26      f                              NY
      Caroline                 3      f                              Pa
Joshua did not come to Ohio with his father, but did end up there in the 1860 Federal Census of Camden Township, Lorain County, Ohio, enumerated on 19 July:

In the 1870 Federal Census Joshua was recorded as "Lafayette" Whitney, age 54, born in NY., in a boarding house in Battle Creek, Calhoun County, Michigan.  The  rest of the family consiosted of son William, age 16, birthplace recorded as Penn; Mabel, age 47, birthplace NY.; and Emma J., age 11, birthplace Ohio.  I believe that they may have been on their way to Gratiot County, and had stopped in Battle Creek for a few days.

In April 1874, his daughter Emma Jane Whitney married David Duncan (see below).  Joshua Whitney, age 59, born in New York, parents both born in New York, and "Elizabeth", age 56, born in New York, father born in New York and mother born in Pennsylvania, were living in Washington Township, Gratiot County, Michigan, ED# 103, page 649D, in the 1880 Federal Census (their daughter Emma and husband David Duncan were also living in Washington Township on page 651D).

Mehitable or Mabel Head (her name was not recorded as "Mabel" until the 1900 census, was the daughter of Job Head and Charity Hunt.  The Whitney Genealogy stated that Joshua later returned to New York where he died.  Although I did not obtain Joshua's or Mabel's death records on my visit to Gratiot County, they are both buried in Collier Cemetery (photos), in Washington Township, Gratiot County, Michigan, near their daughter Emma (Whitney) Duncan.  Joshua died in 1887 and Mabel in 1906 (she was living with her daughter in the 1900 census).  Frank Carlson posted a great photo of the Head sisters of Clymer Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania taken sometime during the 1870's.  From the 1860 Census, the known children of Joshua Whitney and Mehitable or Mabel Head were:

1. Caroline Mabel Whitney, was born in about 1848 in Pennsylvania and died on 9 July 1920 in Marion County, Oregon.  According to the Whitney Genealogy, Caroline was born on 30 May 1847 and married Richard D. Holman on 1 September 1868.  Richard died on 22 September 1909 in Marion County, Oregon (both deaths are listed in the Oregon Death Index, 1903-1998).  They were married by 1870 and enumerated in 2nd Ward Canton, Stark County, Ohio, on the 21st of June:
#432  464  Holeman, Richard  25  m  Millwright        $1100     Canada
Carrie  22   f   Keeping house              Pa

The Holman's were quite a challenge to locate in 1880, the 1880 census enumerator used the always popular method of recording only initials when he recorded the first names of everyone in the household.  Enumerated by Mr. J.C. Thompson on the 8th of June in Salem, Marion County, Oregon, District 78:

In the 1900 Federal Census of 2nd Ward, Salem, Marion County, Oregon, ED# 130, sheet 4A, their household listed (Carrie and Richard both stated that they had been married for 32 years; Carrie stated that she had given birth to 5 living children):

I did not locate them in the 1910 Federal Census.  Carrie was widowed in 1920 and her widowed daughter, Lizzie was also living with her (see below).

From census data and the Whitney Genealogy, their children were:

1.1 Frank Elliot Holman, was born in April 1871 in Ohio.  Frank and his wife Etta (the Whitney Genealogy lists her maiden name as Etta L. Heater) were in Gem Precinct, Shoshone County, Idaho, ED# 98, sheet 10A.  Frank and in the 1900 Federal Census of Etta both stated that they had been married for 7 years, they had 1 daughter in 1900, Edna, born in November 1893 in Oregon.  Frank listed his occupation as a millright.

Frank and Etta were recorded in the 1910 Federal Census of 1st Ward Salem, Marion County, Oregon, ED# 221, sheet 8A (Frank and Etta both stated that they had been married for 17 years; Etta stated that she had given birth to 3 living children):

I did not locate Frank and Etta in 1920.  In 1930 they were soaking up the sun in Long Beach, Los Angeles County, California, ED# 1149, sheet 14B.  Frank was age 60 and listed his occupation as an oil producer, Etta J. was age 58.  None of the girls were still at home.  From census data and the Whitney Genealogy, their children were:

1.1.1 Edna M. Holman, was born in November 1893 in Oregon.

They had one daughter:

1.2.1 Carolyn Whitney Goodall, was born on 8 January 1903 in Oregon and died on 4 December 1994, in Multnomah County, Oregon, spouse listed as "George".  She married George Ethelbert Goodall, born on 13 March 1901 in Oregon and died on 23 September 1988 in Multnomah County, Oregon (both deaths listed in the Oregon Death Index, 1903-1998).

1.3 Lizzie Viola Holman, was born in (1 January 1878 according to the Whitney Genealogy; in about 1878 in California per 1880 census data; April 1876 in Oregon per 1900 census data--take your pick!).  According to the Whitney Genealogy, Lizzie married Edward C. Herren in 1898.  In 1900 they were enumerated in 2nd Ward, Salem, Marion County, Oregon, ED# 130, sheet 5B (Edward and Lizzie both stated that they had been married for 4 years; she stated that she had given birth to no children).  Edward was age 49, birth listed as November 1850 in Minnesota, Lizzie was 24, birth listed as April 1876 in California.  His occupation was listed as a Hops Buyer (I am all for that).

In the 1910 Federal Census of Woodburn Precinct, Marion County, Oregon, ED# 236, sheet 15B, their household listed (E.C. and Lizzie both stated that thye had been married for 12 years, E.C. stated that this was his second marriage; Lizzie stated that she had given birth to 1 living child).  Lizzie was age 32, birthplace listed as California; E.C. stated that he was 46, birthplace listed as Oregon.  They had 1 daughter in 1910, Louise age 4 years, born in Oregon.  E.C. Herren listed his occupation as a Hops Merchant.

Lizzie was widowed and living with her widowed mother, Caroline Holman in the 1920 Federal Census of 2nd Ward, Salem, Marion County, Oregon, ED# 342, sheet 3A.  Caroline listed her age as 72 years, Lizze listed her age as 40.  Her daughter, Louise was 13 years old.

The Whitney Genealogy lists Lizzie's second marriage as Bernard Clark.  She had one daughter:

1.3.1 Louise Elizabeth Herren, was born in about 1906 in Oregon.

1.5 John Wye Holman, was born in January 1884 in Oregon (1900 census).

2. John Whitney, was born in about 1851 in Pennsylvania.

3. William Whitney, was born in about 1854 in Pennsylvania.  I have not located William in the 1880 census.  I did find a William Whitney, living with his 2nd wife, who seems to match the Whitney Genealogy in the 1900 Federal Census of Washington Township, Gratiot County, Michigan, ED# 61, page 4B, enumerated on 4 June:

William may have spent a very short time in California, his son George was born there in November 1888 according to the 1900 census data.

4. Eldred Elliott Whitney, was born in about 1856 in Ohio and died in about 1861 or 1862.  He is also listed in the transcription of Camden Cemetery, along with his grandfather, John R. Whitney (the year of his death in the transcription is shown as 186_ , assuming he was born in 1856, that would make his death in 1861 or 1862 at the age of 5 years 7 months and 8 days).

5. Emma Jane Whitney was born in about 1858 in Ohio.  Emma married David Duncan  on on 22 April 1874.  Their marriage was recorded in Gratiot County, Michigan, Book B, on page 73:

Emma Whitney age 16 born in Ohio

Joseph T. Willett, Minister of the Gospel

Biographical data on the David and Emma (Whitney) Duncan family is linked from her name.
