The children of John and Christianna (Merrills or Merrill) Seybert were:

1.1 David Seybert  was born in about 1845 in Pennsylvania.  David served in Company F, 1st Michigan Sharpshooters.  He enlisted on 5 August 1863 at Lima, Indiana, for a period of three years.  He was mustered in on 1 August 1863.  David was listed as missing in action at Petersburg, Virginia on 17 June 1864.  He died of dysentery on 29 June 1864 at Andersonville Prison in Georgia and is buried in the National Cemetery in Andersonville in grave number 4238.

1.2 John Seybert, Jr., was born in about 1848 in Pennsylvania.  John Seybert was age 32 and married by 1880, and enumerated with his wife Mary, age 35, and son, Charles, age 1, living in Clay township, Lagrange County, Indiana, page 391A.  In the 1900 Federal Census, John and Mary were in Newbury Township, Lagrange County, Indiana, ED# 78, sheet 5B (John and Mary both stated that they had been married for 25 years, making their date of marriage ~1875; Mary stated that she had given birth to 3 children 1 of whom was still living):

Their known children were:

1.2.2.1 Charles Seybert, was born in about 1879 in Indiana (probably deceased before 1900).

1.2.2 Effie Seybert, was born in October 1883 in Indiana.  Effie married Raymond Long in about 1906.  In the 1920 Federal Census, "Effa" and Raymond were again enumerated in Elkhart, Concord Township, Elkhart County, Indiana, ED# 46, sheet 7B.  Raymond L. listed his age as 32, Effa gave her age as 28 (when she was actually about 38!), their son Guy was now age 12, Mary Seybert, was widowed and 74 years old.  Raymond listed his occupation as a laborer for an express company.

In the 1930 Federal Census Raymond L. Long, listed his marital status as single, his age as 44 years and his occupation was again listed as an expressman.  He had a housekeeper and 3 roomer listed in his 1930 household in Elkhart, Concord Township, Elkhart County, Indiana, ED# 16, sheet 10A.  Effie gave conflicting information--in the 1930 Federal Census of Elkhart, Oslo Township, Elkhart County, Indiana, ED# 7, sheet 1A, she listed her marital status as widowed.  She listed her age as 45, her son Guy was single, age 22 and listed his occupation as an assembler in a factory.  Their son was:

1.2.2.1 Guy Long, was born in about 1908 in Indiana.  Guy is listed in the SSN# Death Index, his date of birth is listed as 8 August 1907, date of death listed as August 1975 in Elkhart, Elkhart County, Indiana.

1.3 Amelia Seybert, was born in about 1851 in Pennsylvania.  There is a marriage for Amelia Seybert to George Hartman, dated 23 February 1881, in Lagrange County, Indiana, Book 5 page 26.  Her marker in Riverside Cemetery near her parents reads:

Amelia Hartman
wife of Geo.
Sep. 16, 1851
Jun. 7, 1897

George did remarry in 1898, there were no children listed in his 1900 household in Lima Township.  He died in 1935, his second wife Barbara died in 1942.

1.4 Henry Laffayette Seybert (photograph), was born on 1 April 1854 in Pennsylvania and died on 14 November 1928 in Sturgis, St. Joseph County, Michigan (his age was listed as 75 years, 7 months, and 13 days, occupation listed as a blacksmith, father listed as John, St. Joseph County Deaths, Book 3, page 277).  Henry married Ida Climmens Shoemaker in Elkhart County, Indiana on 26 July 1876, Book 4, page 482.  Ida was the daughter of William K. Shoemaker (from the 1870 census).  Ida died on 13 September 1909 in Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo County, Michigan (Kalamazoo County Deaths, Book 3, page 323).  I have not located Henry's or Ida's place of burial, however, according to the sexton 'H.L. Seybert" did own two burial lots in Riverside Cemetery in Howe, Indiana (markers not found).  The funeral records in Sturgis show that his remains were buried in Howe.  Henry's obituary:

In the 1880 Federal Census, of York Township, Elkhart County, Indiana, page 195C, my great grandfather, William K. Seybert name was recorded as "Willie Seybert", age 3, his father Henry Seybert was 26 years old and stated that he was born in Pennsylvania, (which makes his birth in about 1854), his occupation was listed as a blacksmith.  Willie's mother, Ida, was age 23 (which makes her birth in about 1857) stated that she was born in Michigan, and her parents were both born in New York.  Also living in the household was Willie's younger sister, Myrtie, age 1 year; and Robert Shoemaker, listed as an uncle, age 74, occupation listed as a retired farmer, birthplace listed as Pennsylvania.  In the 1900 Federal Census of Kalamazoo City, Ward 4, Kalamazoo County, Michigan, ED# 119, sheet 18A, enumerated on 19 July, address 420 Winsted St. (near the corner of Jane Place) the Seybert household consisted of (Henry and Ida both stated that they had been married for 24 years; Ida stated that she had given birth to 11 children 8 of whom were still living, their daughter Bertha was not listed in the 1900 household):

I have not located the Henry and Ida Seybert family in the 1910 census.  In 1920 Henry was widowed and living with his son Otto in Kalamazoo.  Ida may have died prior to 1910, Inez was living on her own in Kalamazoo, and a young Ethel Seybert, age 8 years was living in Third Ward, Kalamazoo, in a children's home at 901 South West Street.

Charles and Alice (Kline) Seybert, Sidener Cemetery, Van Buren Township, Lagrange County, Indiana.

1.5 Charles Seybert, was born in April 1856 in Pennsylvania and died in 1904.  The biography of his son, Dr. Joseph Dewitt Seybert , gives some great insight into the Seybert family.  Charles married Alice Kline on 4 April 1881 in Lagrange County, Book 5, page 33.  He operated a general store beside their home it was also a post office and a train station.  A church was built across the street along with a community building.  The small community was named Seybert or Seybert Station, it can still be found on the map, however all the buildings are long since gone.  Charles was very handy, he devised a crude "telephone" using two tin cans and a wire between the house and the store, so he could call his wife, Alice, and tell her he was coming home for dinner.  He was only 48 years old when he died in 1904, he is buried in Sidener Cemetery.

The Charles and Alice (Kline) Seybert family was enumerated in Van Buren Township, Lagrange County, Indiana, ED# 80, sheet 1A recorded on the 1st of June (Charles and Alice both stated that they had been married for 19 years; Alice stated that she had given birth to 7 children, 5 of whom were still living):

Alice was widowed in the 1910 Federal Census of Van Buren Township, Lagrange County, Indiana, ED# 104, sheet 12B.  All five of her children were still listed in the 1910 household, Elna and Emily both listed their occupation as teachers in a common school.  Alice Seybert died just one year later in 1911.  Their children were:
1.5.1 James Alvin Seybert, Sr., was born on 26 July 1883 in Indiana and died on 30 June 1959 in Ottumwa, Iowa.  He married (1st) Mary Dee Basham on 19 June 1915.  She died on 26 March 1953 in Ottumwa, Wapello County, Iowa.  He married (2nd) Blanch Ethel Meadows in 1955.  Blanch died on 17 September 1959 in Ottumwa, Wapello County, Iowa.

By 1920, J. Alvin Seybert, age 36, occupation listed as a commercial salesman, was living in the City of Fargo, 7th Ward, in Cass County, North Dakota, ED# 20, sheet 12A.  the household consisted of his (1st) wife, Mary D., age 34, born in Kentucky and their son, James A., Jr., age 2 years and 3 months, born in Iowa.  The census was recorded on the 9th and 10th of January.

By 1930 James A. and Mary D. Seybert, ages 46 and 44 respectively, were living in the City of Ottumwa, Wapello County, Iowa, ED# 17, sheet 9A.  James listed his occupation as a commercial traveler for a scale factory.  Their son James A., Jr. was now age 12.  Their son was:

1.5.1 James Alvin Seybert, Jr.  was born in about 1917 in Iowa.  He is listed in the SSN# Death Index, date of birth listed as 28 September 1917, date of death listed as August 1979 in Urbandale, Polk County, Iowa.  James is also listed as serving aboard the USS Lexington CV-16, as Lt (JG) James Alvin Seybert, Jr., during WW II.

1.5.2 Elna Viola Seybert, was born on 15 January 1887 in Seybert, Lagrange County, Indiana and died on 19 October 1961 in Howe, Lagrange County, Indiana.  She married Nicholas Earl Schaeffer, on 27 October 1915 in Lagrange County, Indiana.  "Earl" was born on 14 March 1881 in Sturgis, St. Joseph County, Michigan and died on 29 March 1977 in Muncie, Indiana.  The following was written by their daughter, Barbara Schaeffer Wunder:

"My mother, Elna was the oldest daughter of Charles and Alice.  As they died very young, she had the responsibility of raising the children.  She didn't care for the way her older brother Alvin teased her.  She sent herself to college and taught school near her home.  She and Sylvia attended Angola College and University of Indiana.  I still have some barbells she used in exercise class there.  She helped her brother, Joe, go through medical school in Indiana University.  He used to send his laundry home for her to do.  She said she could smell his dirty socks all the way to the house from the mailbox.  She married my Dad, Earl Schaeffer, also a school teacher for a short time.  They lived on a farm west of Sturgis, where 3 stillborn boys were buried in shoe boxes in the garden.  Then lived in Sturgis, on Electric Court, where Becky was born in 1921, before buying the farm before buying the farm south of Sturgis, in Indiana on State Rd. 9 North of Howe on the banks of Fawn River.  It was a beautiful old house, but in terrible condition, very old and drafty.  Alice was born in 1925 and I, in 1926.  Soon the depression came and they couldn't fix it up.  Were lucky not to lose it as many of the farmers did.  Aunt Sylvia (we called her Little Mom) and her daughter, June, lived with us during the lean years, before moving to Kendallville.  We loved them as family.  Sometimes, cousin Effie lived with us too, when she needed a home.  She whistled all the time and nearly drove my Dad nuts.  We were poor, but didn't know it, and had a wonderful life on the farm.  Mother was ambitious and loved to raise chickens to sell the eggs.  Dad hated them and said they weren't worth the work and bother as it was his grain she fed them.  She loved to read and one of the few women in her day to have gone to college.  She took great pride in teaching the adult Sunday School in the Howe Presbyterian Church.  She was a proud member of the Philomath Club, a prestigious study club, that only the very best women were invited to join.  She also was active in her church and Circle Group.  As she grew older, she got diabetes and phlebitis, and battled with them for years.  When she became bed ridden, a housekeeper was hired until they had to put her in a nursing home.  She must have had Alzheimer's Disease as she didn't know me when I went to visit her.  She was a wonderful mother.  As I was "the baby", I sat beside her at the dinner table and always put my left hand in her lap while eating."
In the 1920 Federal Census of Sturgis Township, St. Joseph County, Michigan, ED# 166, sheet 1A, recorded on the 2nd and 3rd of January, Earl N. and Elna Schaeffer, ages 38 and 32 respectively, headed a household on Chicago Road, consisting of Earl's brother, Otis, age 30; her brother, Joseph D. Seybert, age 26, no occupation listed; and her sister, Sylvia, age 29, occupation listed as a school teacher.  Earl listed his occupation as a farmer.

By 1930 the Schaeffer's were living in Lima Township, Lagrange County, Indiana, ED# 11, sheet 9A.  Earl N. listed his age as 49 and his occupation as a farmer.  Elna V. listed her age as 43.  There were three daughter's listed in the 1930 household: Rebecca L., age 8, born in Indiana; Alice E., age 4 (months unreadable), born in Michigan; and Barbara M., age 3 years and 8 months, also born in Michigan.  Also listed in the 1930 household was a niece, Collie J. Campen, age 8, born in Indiana (Sylvia's daughter).

1.5.3 Emily Violet Seybert, was born on 15 October 1889 in Indiana and died soon after a fire on 29 April 1930 in Howe, Lagrange County, Indiana.  She married Glenn D. Hollinshead on 8 January 1914 in Broadview, Montana.  He was born on 9 July 1894 in Naperville, Illinois and died on 15 October 1967 in Battle Creek, Calhoun County, Michigan.  Notes for Emily were compiled by her niece, Barbara Schaeffer Wunder:

"At the home of the groom's parents, Mr. & Mrs. G. Hollinshead, on Thursday p.m. of this week, Jan. 8, 1914, at 5:00 p.m., occurred the marriage of their youngest son, Glen D. Hollinshead to Miss Emily V. Seybert.  Only the immediate relatives witnessed the ceremony that untied them as man and wife.  Rev. Breves of this village performed the ceremony.  The bride has been for the past few months the teacher at the Hollinshead School near there and it was there that the friendship was started that ripened into love.  The groom is well known here by all, having resided here for several years.  They will make their home on the homestead of the bride and will there meet their many friends who wish to congratulate them upon the event."  The above is a clipping from a Montana paper dated Jan. 29, 1914.

"It will be remembered that Emily Seybert went to Billings. Montana, last year in June, accompanied with her brother, Joseph.  in the fall she began teaching near Broadview, and he entered college at Missoula.  In the meantime, also, Miss Emily took up a homestead and prepared to build on it.  She resigned her position at holiday time and the Montana paper gives us the sequel.  Miss Seybert taught successfully for several years in van Buren Township.  She surprised a host of near and dear friends when she went west, again when she entered land and the wedding comes as a happy climax.  We are sorry to lose these dear young people from among us, yet we rejoice with them in their undertakings.  The many friends of the bride join in wishes of happiness and prosperity.  This was published in the Lagrange Standard.

In the 1920 Federal Census, Emily and "Glen" were recorded in Progressive, Yellowstone County, Montana, ED# 178, sheet 4A, on the 8th of January.  The children listed in their 1920 household were: a daughter, Alice, age 5; a son, Jean, age 3 (Jean would later turn out to be a daughter in 1930); and a third daughter, Elna, age 1 year.  Glen listed his occupation as a farmer in 1920.

By 1930, The Hollinshead family had returned to Indiana and were enumerated living in Lima Township, Lagrange County, Indiana, ED# 11, sheet 9A (very near her the Earl and Elna Schaeffer household).  Their 1930 household listed: Alice, age 15, born in Montana; "Jaen", a daughter (her name was misspelled; she was listed as a son in 1920), age 13 born in Montana; and a third daughter, Phyllis, age 8 also born in Montana.  There three daughters were:

1.5.3.1 Alice Hollinshead, was born in about 1915 in Montana.
1.5.3.2 Jean Hollinshead, was born in about 1917 in Montana.
1.5.3.3 Phyllis Hollinshead, was born in about 1922 in Montana.

1.5.4 Sylvia Spray Seybert, was born on 6 February 1891 in Indiana and died on 29 January 1985 in Kendallville, Indiana.  She married Joshua "Jack" Campen on 27 August 1920.  They were later divorced.  Notes for Sylvia were written by her niece, Barbara Schaeffer Wunder:

"We called her Little Mom or Mama Campen.  She was beautiful, the younger sister of my mother, Elna.  They were born in Seybert, Ind. and both attended indiana university together.  Sylvia went out west to overcome a broken heart when her serious boy friend married someone else.  She was a Hardy Girl, waiting on tables in restaurants along railroad lines.  They were strictly chaperoned and carefully watched.  She met Jack Campen and married him out there, although I don't know how they managed it as they weren't allowed to date.

He didn't have a job, so they moved in with my folks in Howe, Ind., the farm on St. Rd. 9.  He was lazy and laid in bed in the morning and refused to help on the farm.  He tried to talk her into going back to teaching, even though it was really frowned upon for a woman to work in those days.  June was born and soon after that Sylvia filed for divorce, another unheard of thing.  Sylvia and June lived with us on the farm and we loved them both.  We called her Little Mom and June called our mother Big mom.  She started teaching in Kendallville Ind. where her brother, Joe, was a doctor, and would go and go home on the bus.  We got so excited on Friday nights when the bus stopped in front of our house with her on it.  Later, she bought a little blue ford, and when June was in high school, they both moved to Kendallville in an apartment.  We cried as we didn't want them to move away.  Later she had a darling Williamsburg style house built on Mitchell Street and lived there for years with her friend Bessie?  She retired from teaching and in her later years lived in a retirement home in Fort Wayne until her death.  She had diabetes for years and when in her 90's had a leg amputated.  She was such a sweet woman and never complained."

In 1920, Sylvia was enumerated in Waterloo City, Ward 3, Blackhawk County, Iowa, ED# 26, sheet 5B.  She was listed as a boarder in the home of James and Rose Rickert.  Her age was listed as "Un" (unknown), her place of birth was listed as Michigan and her occupation was listed as a teacher in a public school.  The census was recorded on the 6th and 7th day of January.

In the 1930 Federal Census, Sylvia S. Campen was age 39, listed her marital status as widowed, and was listed in her brother, Joseph's household in Kendallville, Noble County, Indiana.  She listed her occupation as a teacher in a public school.

1.5.5 Joseph Dewitt Seybert, was born on 30 April 1893 in Indiana and died on 5 July 1954 in Kendallville, Indiana (his biography is linked above).  Notes for Joseph were written by his niece, Barbara Schaeffer Wunder:

"Uncle Joe was born in Seybert, Ind.  Mother said he must have fallen into a bucket of buttermilk, because he was a two head (very white blond hair).  He had a wonderful personality and we all loved him.  I only remember him after he was a doctor and lived in Kendallville.  He always drove big cars and would drive to see us almost every Sunday.  Sometimes he would stop and buy some ice cream bars to bring us.  These were depression years and we thought that he was really rich.  It seemed like it to us.  Aunt Mae always gave us a new dress at Christmas time.  We always went to their house at Christmas, even though we had to drive the farm truck.  Everything was beautiful.  They had such a pretty brick house on Riley St. with a huge porch.  We used to pray for snow so we could stay all night.  We usually went to the country club to slide down the hill there.  One year, they had a new radio that made recordings.  Aunt mae had a movie camera, and we tried to co-ordinated the movie and the record.  We all loved to sing.  Uncle Joe smoked cigars and I loved the smell.  He used to sit and smoke and talk to us while Aunt Mae did all the work.  The Christmas dinners were very elegant, in the dining room with her good china and silver.  One day it did snow so hard we stayed all night.  I slept with Joey.  Mother whispered in my ear not to let him touch me.  I didn't know what she was talking about.  Anyway, he didn't.

Later, after I married John, we moved to K'ville, right next door.  It was a dream come true to live beside them.  He delivered our first 3 children.  He loved to go down to the Elks, and used to knock on our back door, and talk John into going with him.  He used to stay late and drink.  Poor John had to get up early the next morning and go to work, but Uncle Joe always slept late and only had afternoon hours at the office.  He had diabetes for years and later had Kidney trouble, Nephritis, i think they called it.  He died quite young."

In the 1930 Federal Census, joseph and his wife, Mae, ages 38 and 35 respectively, were enumerated in Kendallville, Noble County, Indiana.  Their son, Joseph D., Jr., was age 1 year.  His sister Sylvia was also listed in the household at 117 South Riley Street.  Joseph listed his occupation as a "Med Doctor" general practice.
