The following affidavits and bounty land claim, were taken by local Justice(s) of the Peace on the behalf of Elias Stillwell Harrison and by Maria Doane (very likely his widow who may have remarried) the guardian of the two youngest children of Elias Stillwell Harrison.  They were reproduced at the National Archives, and submitted by Velma McKay.  Copies of the originals were transcribed by Scott Duncan.  The claim filed by Maria Doane was on a standard government form, text in bold italics were written in on the form.
 


Affidavits taken by Justice(s) of the Peace on behalf of Elias Stillwell Harrison, for the purpose of obtaining bounty lands:
 
"State of Wisconsin
County of Marquette    }ss:

"On the eleventh day of September A.D. one thousand eight hundred and fifty one personally came before me, Hiram A. Bucks a Justice of the Peace within and for the County of Marquette, and state aforesaid.  Elias S. Harrison aged forty two years, a resident of Marquette County and State aforesaid, who being duly sworn according to Law declares, that he is the identical Elias S. Harrison who was a private in Captain Ephraim Harrison's Company, in the twelfth Regiment of Michigan Militia Commanded by Colonel David E. Brown, in the War with the Sue [sic] and Fox Indians known as the Black Hawk War.  That he was drafted at Schoolcraft, Kalamazoo County, Michigan, on or about the fifteenth day of May A.D. 1832, for the term of during the war, and continued in the actual service for the term of one month, and was honorably discharged at Schoolcraft aforesaid on or about the twentieth day of June A.D. 1832, on account of the termination of the War.  Which discharge was not written but verbal and that he has never received land.
    He makes this declaration for the purpose of obtaining the bounty land to which he may be entitled under the act of Congress granting bounty lands to certain officers and soldiers who have been engaged in the Military Service of the United States _____  September 28th 1850.

"Territory of Minnesota
County of Goodhue     }ss:

    On this third day of March A.D. (1858) One Thousand Eight [hundred] and Fifty Eight, personally appeared before me, a Justice of the peace, _____ and for the County and Territory of afforesaid [sic] Elias S. Harrison aged forty nine years and two months, a resident of Central Point in the County of Goodhue Minnesota Territory, _____ being duly sworn according to Law, declares that he is the identical Elias S. Harrison who was a private in the Company commanded by Captain Epheriam [sic] Harrison in the war known as the BlackHawk War, that he volunteered at Big
                                                                                                                               A.D. 1832
Prairie Round in Kalamazoo County in the State of Michigan, on or about the first day of June ^ and continued in the actual service for the term of fourteen days and was honorably discharged at Big Prairie Round in Kalamazoo County in the State of Michigan on or about the 30th day of June A.D. 1832.

    He makes this declaration for the purpose of obtaining the bounty land to which he may be entitled under the act approved March 3d 1855.  He also declares that he has not received a warrant for bounty land under this or any other Act of Congress, but made application _____ two years ago from which no returns were has ever been received by him.

undersigned, a Justice of the Peace, duly authorized to administer oaths within and for the County
and State aforesaid, personally appeared Mrs Maria Doane, (Guardian
of James M. Harrison & Martha E. Chap___ (married) only 2 children  ____ [unreadble]
aged 38 years, whose Post Office address is Lake City in the County of
Wabasha and State of Minnesota who being duly

sworn according to law, declares that she is the child, and only child ^ who were under 21 years of age on the 3d day of March A. D. , 1855, of the late Elias S. Harrison
who served in the war between the United States and the Indians _____ Black Hawk
and is the identical person who served under Captain E Harrison
in the ------------------------ Regiment of Michigan Vols commanded by

Colonel D Brown That he was ^ born as follows
viz.  Martha E. Harrison, now Chap___ heir, been married, was born on the 20' day of April 1848,
and James M. Harrison on the 8th day of

James M. Harrison born on the 3dday of November 1849

SHe makes this declaration for the purpose of obtaining Bounty Land to which she may

that he has not received a Warrant for Bounty Land, under this or any other Act of Congress nor made
any other application therefor but she believes that this Elias S. Harrison
had himself come years before his death received one

she hereby appoints C.W. Bennett Esq of Washington D.C. his true and lawful Attorney, with power of substitution, to prosecute his claim for land, to receive theCertificate or Warrant when issued, and to do all other acts necessary and proper in the premises to obtainfrom the proper authorities at Washington, or elsewhere, certified copies of Army or Navy records in which his service may be recorded, and to procure all evidece necessary to establish his said claim.
