The following records from Champaign County, Ohio convey important information about the family of James and Nancy (Stillwell) Baker.  The James and Nancy Baker family lived in Goshen Township from about 1820-1840.

According to Cemetery Records of Champaign County, Ohio (on microfilm at the Allen County, Indiana Library) James Baker died on 20 October 1839 at age 44 years.  He is buried in Maple Grove Cemetery in Goshen, Ohio.  That would make his date of birth in about 1795.

The following is taken from “The Public Records of Champaign, County Ohio, Chancery Records of the Court of Common Pleas”, Record Book 18, page 122—Filed 26 October 1840—

Petition for Conveyance Administrator of James Baker vs. Widow and heirs of James Baker:
“William F. Baker was the administrator of the estate. James Baker, who held a title bond from French Rambo, sold Lot Numbers 6 and 8 in Mechanicsburg to Aaron Reed and Robert Jones.  James Baker died in the fall of 1839 and his heirs were: Nancy Baker, widow; William F. Baker; Minerva Jane wife of Samuel Lockwood of Clark County; James Milton Baker; Jeremiah Baker; John F. Baker; Maria L. Baker, Ann Baker; Robert Newton Baker; Sarah E. Baker; Rebecca Baker; Jasper K. Baker; and Jonathan Baker.”
Also from the “Public Records of Champaign County, Ohio, Record Books 1 through 23, Volume 1, researched and copied by Pat Stickley, abstracted and typed, by Denise Kay Moore, 1998:
“Record Book 18, page 40-Filed 24 October 1840-Injunction to Stay Waste Morris Springer et al
 Vs.
William F. Baker et al

Morris Springer of Champaign County, Calvin Springer and William Dennis Springer of Fayette County, Pennsylvania owned 188 acres in Military Survey Number 6809 (George Dawson, Goshen tp.) which was part of 750 acres.  The petitioners won an action of ejectment against William F. Baker, Nancy Baker, James Hays, and Elnathan Bond.  The heirs of James Baker claimed the land by a sale from the auditor.  The complainants filed this injunction in order to protect the land before and during the time the defendants vacate.”

James Baker first appeared in the 1820 Federal Census of Goshen Township, Champaign County, Ohio:

Ferrell Baker does appear in the 1850 Census of Goshen Township, Champaign County, Ohio:

In the "History of Champaign County, Ohio" page 876, published by Beers in 1881, biographical information relating to "Farrel" Baker can be found in the biography of his youngest son, John C. Baker.  Farrel Baker came to Champaign County in 1812, was married twice, and fathered 17 children.  Farrel died in 1871 at the age of 82 years, making his birth in about 1789 in Virginia.

Nancy Baker, now widowed, moved with her large family, north to Michigan sometime between 1840 and 1842.  Nancy's daughter Mariah L. Baker, married John Strange Harrison on 22 November 1842 in Kalamazoo County.  After Nancy's death in 1847, some of the younger children were found living with other family members.  Although her marker is barely readable, Nancy Baker died on 4 September 1847 and is buried in Roof Cemetery, in Climax, Michigan.

The children of James Baker and Nancy Stillwell were:

1. William F. Baker was born in about 1817.  William was the administrator of the estate of his father James Baker in the fall 1839.  A William Baker, about the right age does appear in the 1840 Federal Census of Mad River Township, Champaign County, however, there were also several other Baker families living in Mad River:

Their known children through 1860 were:
2.1 Mary Lockwood, was born in about 1840 in Ohio.

2.2 James Lockwood, was born in about 1843 in Ohio.  James eventually made his way to Michigan, he is listed at age 28, occupation farmer, in the 1870 Federal Census of Texas Township, Kalamazoo County, Michigan (he listed his place of birth in 1870 as Maine).  His wife Sarah, age 20, a daughter, Mary, age 9/12, and Emma J. Lutes, age 8, born in Michigan were also listed in the 1870 household (they lived just two households away from William and Martha (Harrison) Wooley).

In the 1880 Federal Census, James changed his place of birth to Ohio.  He and Sarah were now living in Schoolcraft, Kalamazoo Michigan.  Their children were: Mary A., age 10; Blanch, age 8; Harry, age 7; and a Baby son, age 7 months.  James listed his age as 37 and his occupation as a "RR Laborer".  I have not located James and Sarah in the 1900 census.  Their known children were:

2.2.1 Mary A. Lockwood, was born in about 1870 in Michigan.

2.2.2 Blanch Lockwood, was born in about 1872 in Michigan.

2.2.3 Harry L. Lockwood, was born in about 1872 in Michigan.  Harry was married and living in Prairie Ronde Township, Kalamazoo County, Michigan, ED# 128, sheet 7B, next door to Owen and Ida (Shirley) Harrison (Harry and Cora both stated that they had been married for 7 years; Cora stated that she had given birth to three living children):

Harry and Cora were again enumerated in Prairie Ronde Township, Kalamazoo County, Michigan, ED# 160, sheet 3B (Harry and Cora both stated that they had been married for 17 years; Cora again stated that she had given birth to three living children).  Their three children were all still listed in the 1910 household: sons, Gale, age 16 and Douglas, age 15; and daughter Mable M., age 12.  Harry listed his occupation as a carpenter and his place of birth as Pennsylvania.

In the 1920 Federal Census of Prairie Ronde Township, Kalamazoo County, Michigan, ED# 188, sheet 5A their household listed:

2.2.3.2 Douglas Lockwood, was born in December 1894 in Michigan.  He was still unmarried in the 1930 census and living with his parents on Eliza St. in Schoolcraft, Michigan.  Douglas Lockwood is also listed in the SSN# Death Index, his date of birth is listed as 9 December 1894 and his date of death is listed as 14 March 1989, last residence listed as Schoolcraft, Michigan.

2.2.3.3 Mabel Lockwood, was born in March 1898 in Michigan.  Mabel married Heskel Bowyer.  In addition to the 1920 Census data above, they were also listed in the 1930 Federal Census of Schoolcraft, Kalamazoo County, Michigan, ED# 55, sheet 2A:

7. Ann Baker was born in about 1828.  It is possible that Ann Baker is the Ann Henry shown below in 1850, however it is still unconfirmed.  From the 1850 Federal Census of Prairie Ronde Township, Kalamazoo County:

#1116    1130    B.W. Henry       24    m    " [farm]    N.Y.

11. Jonathan Baker was born in about 1839 and was living with John and "Louisa" Harrison in 1850 (see above).

12. Rebecca Baker was born in about 1840.  Rebecca is likely the "Emaline" shown living with John and "Lousia" Harrison in 1850 (see above).
