From the Kalamazoo Gazette dated 8 October 1893:

"$40,000 In Gold

A Treasure Believed to be Hidden By the late Dr. Bazel Harrison near Schoolcraft—He hoarded gold but it can not be found.

One week ago last Friday, Sept. 29, Dr. Bazel Harrison an aged and much respected citizen of Schoolcraft, suddenly died, leaving as the result of a long life of self-denial and frugality a sum of money.  The amount in dollars and cents is at this writing a matter of conjecture.  Enough is known, however, regarding the habits of the deceased and remarks that had been dropped by him from time to time during the latter part of his life, to make it more than a probability that his earthy possessions were of no mean order and somewhere a goodly number of yellow ducats were to be found, but—that somewhere—is still a profound mystery.  The deceased has for the past 25 years, been changing his paper and silver money into gold and those who have been most intimately connected with the affairs of the Harrison’s say the ready cash will exceed $40,000.  The premises have been thoroughly searched as have every bank in this city, but, as yet, nothing in the way of gold dollars has materialized.  The deceased leaves one son and two daughters.  His age was 70 years.  The people of Schoolcraft and the surrounding country for miles are much exercised over the matter and the outcome will be watched with much interest.”
