From the Kalamazoo Gazette dated July 1929:
“James Harrison 71 years of age, lifetime resident of Schoolcraft and it’s community passed away at his home in our village on Thursday of last week. Mr. Harrison’s death was sudden and unexpected, he having been down town in the morning of the day of his passing, and appeared to be well as usual up to noon time when after eating dinner he lay down for a rest. He passed away very soon after laying down.Mr. Harrison was another of Schoolcraft’s pioneers of early days, always intensely interested in his village and countryside. He was always ready to assist in every matter of community welfare and the promotion of a finer home community and village. He served willingly whenever called upon to render his share of civic duty—was always ready to help when Fraternity or the church sought help from him.
He was actively engaged in business in our village for many years, and has built a memorial for himself in the heart of the community and fellowmen by his love for peace and goodwill that will be long remembered.
James Baker Harrison, son of John S. and Mariah Louisa Harrison was born in Prairie Ronde township on Sept. 30 1857. On October 9th 1879 he was united in marriage to Miss Nellis Mack, daughter of Return and Minerria [sic] Mack. Two children were born to them Mrs. Cora Moore of Alhambra, California and Mack Harrison of North Hollywood, California. His wife passed away October 12, 1904.Later on July 12, 1904 he was married to Carrie L. Sessions of Schoolcraft and they have ever since resided here. He was engaged in the Grocery business for several years also in the Lumber business. He ways always a very kind and indulgent father and husband and a kind neighbor and respected by every one. He was a member of the Modern Woodman Lodge of Schoolcraft.
His death was very sudden, seemingly in good health and it was a great shock to the community. He leaves to mourn his loss, his wife, daughter and son, five grandchildren, two brothers Wm Harrison of Schoolcraft and Owen who lives on the old Homestead and one sister Emma Longwell of Prairie Ronde and a Host of other relatives and many friends.
He passed away July 10th and services were held at the home on July 15 and he was buried beside his first wife in the village cemetery. Rev. Finkbeiner officiating.”
