---------------------------------
From the book "The Kings and Queens of England and Scotland" by
Plantagenet Somerset Fry:
[Page 111] Scotland, like Wales, has a much longer history than
England. After some 1,200 years of pagan Celtic civilization, into which the
Romans made inroads in the first and second centuries, Christianity reached the
country at the end of the forth century. By the time St. Columba founded his
great monastery at Iona in the 560's, Scotland was divided into four kingdoms:
Dalriada in the west, peopled by Scots from Ireland; the Pictish kingdom in
the north; Strathclyde in the south-west; and Bernicia, or Lothian, in the
east.
[Page 9] When the Romans ended their direct rule of Britain early in
the fifth century, they left behind a country under attack from the Angles,
Saxons and Jutes of northern Germany. Over the next 200 years, these invaders
expelled the native Britons from England and pushed them back into Scotland and
Wales. The invaders set up kingdoms of their own, and by the early seventh
century England was split into the seven warring kingdoms of the Heptarchy.
One of these - Wessex - finally triumphed and produced in Ecgberht, king from
802-39, the first King of England.
[Page 10] The Anglo-Saxon occupiers of England had completed the
process of driving the Celts out of the country by 613. Thereafter the country
was divided into seven kingdoms: Kent, Sussex, Essex, East Anglia, Wessex,
Mercia and Northumbria, collectively known as the Heptarchy. All were intent
on establishing supremacy over, or defending themselves from, their neighbors.
Some, notably Kent and Northumbria fought to convert their neighbors to
Christianity, a religion brought to England by St. Augustine in 597.
Northumbria was the first to gain the upper hand and then Mercia, but after the
death of Offa of Mercia in 796, Wessex established its supremacy and Ecgbergt
of Wessex (802-39) became, in effect, the first King of England. Meanwhile the
seven kingdoms had already turned their attention to fighting off incursions by
the Vikings.
[Page 10] Bede, or Baeda (673-735) wrote a work titled "Ecclesiastical
History of the English Nation". He was an English monk and historian.
[Page 10] KING OFFA
The kingdom of Mercia rose to prominence untder the leadership
of Offa (757-96). Offa extended Mercia's boundaries as far north as North
Wales and in the south defeated the Wessex army to extend his rule towards
Bristol. However, his kingdom was under constant threat from border raids by
the Celtic Welsh. To thwart these attacks, Offa constructed a great earthwork
dyke, which stretched the length of the Welsh border.
757 Offa becomes King of Mercia until his death in 796.
779 Offa defeats the West Saxons at Benson and is regarded by
many as overlord of England.
780 Offa begins the construction of a great defensive dyke on
the border between England and Wales.
787 The Vikings make their first raids on the English Coasts.
794 Offa and Charlemagne sign an agreement to encourage trade
between England and Europe.
796 Offa dies.
[Page 112] During the period when the English kingdoms of the
Heptarchy were struggling with one another for supremacy, there was a similar
struggle in Scotland between the Picts, Scots and Angles. The Angles were
crushed by the Picts in 685, who were in turn defeated by the Scots under
Kenneth MacAlpin in 843. Kenneth then became the first King of Scotland, from
whom all kings of Scotland were descended. Kenneth's immediate successors had
to deal with continuous Viking raids, as well as aggravation from England. But
in 1018 Malcolm II routed a huge Viking and English army, allowing him to bring
Lothian and then Strathclyde into the kingdom and complete the unification of
Scotland.
[Page 112] THE PICTS
The chroniclers of the eighth and ninth centuries regared the
Picts as shodowy people who originally came from Scythia in the north of the
Black Sea.
[Page 112] SCOTLAND UNITED (843-1034)
843 Kenneth MacAlpin, King of the Scots, defeats the Picts and
unites Scotland north of the River Forth.
859 Death of Kenneth MacAlpin; he is succeeded by his brother
Donald I.
863 Donald I dies and is succeeded by Kenneth's son,
Constantine I.
877 Constantine I is defeated and killed in battle by the
Danes and is succeeded by his brother Aelh.
878 Aedh is murdered and is succeeded by Eocha, grandson of
Kenneth MacAlpin.
889 Death of Eocha; he is succeeded by Donald II, son of
Constantine I.
900 Death of Donald II and succession of Aedh's son,
Constantine II.
937 Constantine II, along with the Danes and others, is
defeated at the Battle of Brunanburh by Aethelstan of England.
942 Constantine II abdicates and retires to a monastery; he
is succeeded by Malcolm I, son of Donald II.
954 Malcolm I is killed and is succeeded by Indulphus, son of
Constantine II.
962 Indulphus abdicates and is succeeded by Dubh (Duff), son
of Malcolm I.
967 Dubh is murdered and is succeeded by Cuilean, son of
Indulphus.
971 Cuilean dies and is succeeded by Kenneth II, Malcolms I's
younger son.
995 Death of Kenneth II; he is succeeded by Constantine III,
son of Cuilean.
997 Constantine III is murdered and succeeded by Kenneth III,
son of Dubh.
1005 Kenneth III is killed in a civil war and is succeeded by
Malcolm II, son of Kenneth II.
1018 Malcolm II wins the Battle of Carham against a huge army
of English and Vikings, bringing Lothian, in the southeast of the country, into
the kingdom. The independent Kingdom of Strathclyde, in the west of the
country, joins Scotland shortly afterwards, uniting the whole of Scotland
within roughly its present boundaries for the first time.
1031 Malcolm swears allegiance to Canute of England.
1034 Death of Malcolm II.
---------------------------------
From the Book "The Stewarts of Appin" by John H. J. Stewart, F.S.A. Scot.
and Lieut.-Col. Duncan Stewart, Late 92d Highlanders:
Pg. 3 "Fleance, son of Bancho. Of him we read in Buchanan's History,
that on the murder of his father and brothers, he escaped "secretly to Wales";
and in Corbet Anderson's Early History and Antiquities of Shropshire, that when
Macbeth, King of Scotland, "sought about the year 1050, to secure the
succession in his own line, by putting to death, and confiscating the estates
of those whom he supected of plotting the restoration of Malcolm Canmore,
amongst those who fled from his reach was Fleance, son of Banquo, the murdered
Thane of Locaber."
Pg. 5 "Of Flaaldus or Flenchus we know little, except by tradition.
His name appears to have been variously spelled; he is called Fladald in
various charters to his son. Dugdale gives his name as Flathald. Leland calls
his son Alan Fleilsone, and in the Fitzwarine Chronicle he is named Alan Fitz
Flaen. In 1275 the Norfork jurors spoke of the father of Alan as "a certain
knight called "Flancus". There are many circumstances in the history of Alan,
and his son Walter, which point to their connection with Wales.
... Camden says Fleance was murdered on account of the favour with
which he, a stranger, was looked upon by the Prince, about the year 1060,
leaving one son, Alan."
