Three Langley/Longley
Families with a Common Ancestor: in Gloucester & Hunterdon
Cos., New Jersey; Baltimore, Maryland; and Lower Norfolk Co.,
Virginia

Updated 29 Jun 2005
We knew for years that our William
Longley was born in 1761 in New Jersey because he said so on his
Revolutionary Pension File, and that he came to Loudoun Co., VA,
as a child and was living with his father at the time he enlisted
or was drafted into the Patriot army. The only man in Loudoun
Co., Virginia, who could have been his father was Joseph Longley,
a tax payer there before and after the Revolution, whose other
son Joseph Longley, Jr., who came of age (on list of tithables)
about the same year William did. The name was spelled both Langley
and Longley until the "a" was finally dropped by most
of the family.
In Hunterdon Co., NJ, Joseph Langley/Longley,
Sr., had been Joseph Jr., the son of Joseph Sr. and wife Mary
Campbell. Joseph Jr's wife's name is unknown, but their son Joseph
Jr. of Loudoun Co. was really Joseph Longley III. A few years
after William left Loudoun Co. to move in stages down the Shenandoah
Valley to Tennessee, Joseph
III remained to Rockingham Co., VA.
What we didn't know was just where
in New Jersey William and his father and brother came from, nor
their relationship to the Longleys who arrived to Loudoun Co.
shortly before William left to begin his southwesterly trek toward
Tennessee (See LONGLEY page). (Joseph Longley Jr. and Sr. stayed
in Loudoun County through the 1810 census, and the father apparently
died before Joseph Jr. turned up in Rockingham Co., VA by 1811
before the 1820 census.)
Then we learned where Joseph Sr.
and Jr. came from: Hunterdon Co., NJ. There our Joseph Longley,
Sr., was Joseph Longley, Jr. -- the son of Joseph Longley and
wife Mary Campbell. Also in Hunterdon Co. was a large contingent
of Bodines, one of whose daughters our William Longley married
later in Loudoun Co. -- Mary Ann Bodine.
Mary Campbell was the daughter of
John Campbell who died by 1731
at Manhatawny, Philadelphia Co., PA, and his wife Charity. John
Campbell was exiled to East Jersey in 1682 from Edinburgh, Scotland,
where he was imprisoned in Canongate Prison for following his
Laird (the Duke of Argyll, head of Clan Campbell) in a Covenanters'
army against the King's Army. The Duke was executed and many of
his fathers were exiled to America. John Campbell and wife Charity
moved from Monmouoth Co., NJ, to Philadelphia area in Pennsylvania
by 1716 when he purchased land.
Thanks to the late Joanne McFadden,
we know that the other Longleys who came to Loudoun Co., VA, overlapping
some with ours, were children of her ancestor, Benjamin Longley,
Sr., of Baltimore Co., Maryland. Longley is not a common name,
and it is far more likely than not that the two families were
related. Benjamin who stayed in Maryland and Joseph who came to
Loudoun Co. were of the same generation, and almost surely cousins
if not brothers. Members of both families moved down the Shenandoah
Valley and lived at Rockingham, Montgomery, and Washington Cos.,
VA before some moved on to Tennessee.
Joanne's grandmother's lineage traces
back through George Longley born in 1799, Baltimore Co., MD, his
father William Longley who was located in Maryland; if he left,
he did so for only brief periods, to William's father Benjamin
Longley, Sr. A lawsuit in State Archives records in Annapolis,
MD, was entered by Pltf. Samuel Longley in 1818, vs. the court
for title to his portion of his father's land. He named his father
Benjamin's eight other children -- his seven brothers, William,
James, John, Benjamin, Peter, Caleb, George; and his sister Elizabeth
and her husband Charles Watts. Three brothers (Peter, James and
Benjamin) were living in VA; two brothers (George and Caleb) and
their sister Elizabeth and husband Charles Watts had moved to
Ohio. Presumably brothers William and John were living in Maryland.
This William Longley's War of 1812
Pension Application file from the National Archives, shows that
he served from Maryland but applied for pension in Ohio.
The family lived in or near Soldier's
Delight Hundred in Baltimore Co. The William who appeared on the
Loudoun Co., VA 1788 Tax List may have been the Baltimore Co.
William. If so, he returned to Maryland where he married a Margaret
Zimmerman and fathered Joanne's ancestor George Longley. He was
probably the William Longley who served in the War of 1812 from
Maryland but lived in Ohio when he applied for a pension. Benjamin's
son James was in Washington Co., VA, by 1783.
William Longley and the Bodine family
lived a while at Washington Co. on their way southwest along the
Shenandoah Valley to Tennessee.
Probably you've looked at Joseph
Longley, Sr., on our Longley-Bodine Family page. Next, let's look
at Benjamin in Maryland. Then at Longleys in New Jersey, their
probable common origin.

Benjamin LONGLEY was born before
1721; based on being old enough to witness deed 1742. His first
mention found, in deed from James Bird, planter of Baltimore Co.,
MD, to Thomas Bond for 60 pounds, his crops and chattel goods.
Witnesses: Benjamin Longly and Charles Hissey on 24 Dec 1742 at
Baltimore Co., MC. He married Elizabeth _____ circa 1757. He appeared
on the census of 1790 at Baltimore Co., MD; 2 males under 16,
2 males 16+, 2 females. [The two females were more than likely
Benjamin's wife Elizabeth and his daughter Elizabeth. Of the three
males, 2 under 16 and 1 over 16, the youngest 2 may have been
Caleb and George who went with daughter Elizabeth and her husband
Charles Watts to Ohio, and mentioned in the lawsuit.]. He died
on 12 Oct 1794, according to 1818 Lawsuit by Son Samuel to get
title to his portion of father's estate, which named Benjamin
and all his children.
Benjamin Longley (Langley), witnessed
the will of Mary Webb, Middlesex Hundred, Baltimore County dated
Jan 16, 1775 and Jan 26, 1775. Maryland Calender of Wills,
1774-1777, Vol 16, Published by Family Line Publications,
Westminster, MD, 1995.
The 1783 Tax List for Middlesex
One Hundred, Baltimore Co., lists Benjamin Longley and 50 acre
part of North Carolina. It also states that there were 8 inhabitants.
Perhaps six of his nine children were born by then. Source: 1783

Barnes and Bettie Stirling Carothers. Maps by George J. Horvath,
Jr.
The owner of the land after Benjamin
died was listed as Elizabeth Longley widow. Three of her children
were still living with her in 1798 (probably the three who went
to Ohio). John was already married and living in Baltimore City,
Samuel had his own 50 acres near his mother in what is now Carroll
Co., MD, and William had married Margaret Zimmerman. Benjamin
(Jr.) appeared on the rent rolls at the same time his father purchased
the land in Soldier's Delight. It appears that James was the first
of the brothers to move to Virginia (he was in Washington Co.
1783 tax list), and Benjamin, Jr., was the next.
James Longley married Elizabeth
Starck in Baltimore Co. about 1786. We know from the lawsuit that
he was in Virginia and his brother Benjamin was in the same area.
They were sureties on the bond of $1,500,000 for administration
of the will of Elvia C. Tunstall in Washington Co., VA written
18 Jan 1809, recorded 14 Apr 1818.

COMMENTS: Sarah Allen, who married
John Langlee 1791 in Salem Co., NJ, was the daughter of Benjamin
and Elizabeth Allen. Elsewhere in the same family there is mention
of a Joseph Langley near Princeton, NJ and Ananais Allen of having
a bond due to Lawrence Van Hook, dec'd of Monmouth County, NJ,
in 1725. Note the name Benjamin in the Allen Family. It may or
may not be significant, but what is even more interesting is that
they mention Ananais and his family disappear from NJ after 1743.
The Campbell family acquired large
tracts of land in that part of New Jersey.
Handy Helper for Genealogists says Mercer Co., NJ was created 1838 from
parts of Somerset, Middlesex, Hunterton, and Burlington. The town
of Princeton is in Mercer Co.; maybe Princeton was at one time
in Middlesex? Somerset came from Middlesex in 1688, Hunterton
came from Burlington in 1714. We also have a reference to Trenton
and Philadelphia both within easy reach of Princeton. Notice the
marriage of John Langlee to Sarah Allen of Allways Creek, Salem
Co.
Oddly, the introduction on NJ says
that only in Hudson Co. does the co. clerk issue marriage licenses.
In all other counties, such licenses are handled by the town or
city clerks, township assessor, or local registrar of vital statistics.
The Chew family were also near the
Longleys in Baltimore County, MD.

SOME DATA
ON VIRGINIA LONGLEYS
The 1790 and 1800 censuses of VA
are lost. There is a HEADS OF FAMILIES: VIRGINIA 1790 book comprised
of lists of names from 1782-86 Tax Lists. Loudoun Co., VA is not,
for some reason included. There were Langley/Longleys listed in
Mecklenberg, New Kent, Princess Anne, and Norfolk Cos.
There were Langley/Longley immigrants
to VA beginning as early as 1637 to Charles City, James City,
Norfolk, Lancaster, Accomack, Rappahannock, New Kent, Stafford,
Lunenberg, & Dinwiddie Cos., as listed in Nell Marion Nugent's
series: CAVALIERS & PIONEERS: ABSTRACTS OF VIRGINIA LAND
PATENTS 1623-1752. These patent images can be viewed on-line
from the Univ. of VA, and there's a link on my LINKS
page. The MAJORITY of these Langley immigrants (or sometimes transporters)
were to Norfolk and New Kent Cos., and still there during the
time ours were in Loudoun Co., VA.
From original and published sources,
including Index to The Tithables of Loudoun County, VA and to
Slaveholders & Slaves, 1758-1786, the Longley tax payers of
Loudoun Co. were:
Name 1767 1772 1774-7 1779 1780
1781 1782 1783 1787
Longley, Joseph 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1
Longley, Joseph Jr. 1 1 1 1
Longley, William 1 1 1 1 1 1
Longley, William Sr. 1 ?
Since William was born 1761 (from
his Revolutionary pension application) and started paying taxes
in 1779, the taxable age (it changed several times) must have
been 18.
The 1810 VA census has been printed
in an index.

checked out, because of similarity of names to ours.
Joanne's ancestor was Benjamin Longley
(similar age and possible brother of our Joseph Longley, Sr.).
He had sons Benjamin (Jr.), John, Samuel, Peter, Caleb, George,
James & William.
Benjamin (Jr.) married in Washington
Co. and we don't know names of his children. His brother William
had sons George and John. Joanne descends thru William's son George.
I believe the other sons of Benj. Sr. had only girls, or names
of offspring are unknown. Am I right, Joanne?
You will note that none of OUR family
above had slaves, nor did they in TN records. Benjamin in Washington
Co. had one free black in his household, and Joanne says that
her family had black employees, never slaves. Our William's modest
cabin in TN is not that of a prosperous slave-holding planter,
but a farmer.
