 Thomas Jefferson Longley (1842-1908), son of James and Nancy Longley, grandson of William and Mary, holding rifle and believed to be in his Civil War uniform. He enlisted in the Union Army 25 Dec 1863 at age 21 in Jefferson Co., KY (probably Louisville). He served in Co. L, 4th Regt., KY Cavalry Volunteers, and was discharged at Macon, GA 21 Aug 1865.

He fathered sixteen children by two wives who were sisters, Avisa May and
Dora Narcissus Turner. Nine of these children were males and several came to Texas.

 Obituary in Chattanooga Times 19 Jul 1967, p. 7: LONGLEY - James William 82 well known resident of Apison, Tenn., died at his home at 3:30 o'clock Wed. morning. Mr. Longley was a member of Apison Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife Mrs. Ada Bennett Longley, Apison, Tenn.; three sons, M. R. Longley of Chattanooga, W. H. and O. F. Longley, Apison; one sister, Mrs. A. C. Brown, Rockmart, Georgia; two halfsisters, Mrs. Nellie Evans, Chattanooga, and Mrs. Grady Mase, Ooltewah, Tenn.; two halfbrothers, J. D. and C. L. Longley, Collegedale, Tenn.; and five grandchildren, Grady, David, Steve, Mark of Chattanooga, and Miss Virginia Longley, Apison, Tenn. Funeral services will be held at the Chapel of J. Avery Bryan Co. at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon, Rev. Ben Smith officiating, interment in the Plowman Cemetery. Active pallbearers: Frank Bell, Ralph Elliott, Jack Wheeler, Curtis Poe, Vane Jones, David Poe. Honorary, Brady Hunley, R. K. Davidson, Lee Wrinkle, J. B. Reno, Curtis Thatch, Roy Redman, Claud Kaneaster, Ed Murphy, G. B. Hullander, Ralph Hullander. The body is at the funeral home of J. Avery Bryan Co.

1. James1 Longley was born on 1 Oct 1792 at VA. He married Nancy Long, daughter of George Long and Elizabeth _____ Long, circa 1815; 1st wife. He married Mariah Frances Haddock circa 1856; 2nd wife. He died on 14 Jul 1870 at Ringgold, Catoosa Co., GA, at age 77. He was buried after 14 Jul 1870 at Salem Baptist Ceme., Catoosa Springs, Catoosa Co., GA; without a tombstone.
He was on tax lists, 80 acres between 1829 and 1830 at McMinn Co., TN. He appeared on the census of 1830 at McMinn Co., TN; age 40-50, wife 20-30, 7 children. He lived between 1852 and 1854 at Blount Co., TN; where his wife Nancy died. He and Nancy Long lived on 20 Mar 1852 at Hamilton Co., TN; when her father's will was settled.

He married Dora Narcissus Turner, daughter of George Turner and Elizabeth Alexander, on 26 Apr 1882 at Antelope, TX; 2nd wife, sister of 1st wife, by C. E. Pritchard, M.G. He died on 21 Sep 1908 at Archer City, Archer Co., TX, at age 66.

4. Rev. Preston David2 Longley (James1) was born on 19 Jul 1857 at Ringgold, Catoosa Co., GA. He married Dorcas Horn circa 1875; 1st wife. He married Della McDonald circa 1927; 2nd wife. He married Octavia Eidson circa 1935; 3rd wife. He died on 13 Jun 1940 at Apison, TN, at age 82; obituary:

 The Rev. P. D. LONGLEY, 82, retired Baptist minister, who had served 40 years in the ministry before his retirement six years ago, died at his residence in Apison at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
Mr. Longley was pastor of the Little Prospect Baptist Church in Whitfield Co., GA for many years. His last work was in organizing the High Point church near Apison. He held the pastorate of this church until his retirement.
Surviving are his wife; seven daughters, Mrs. H. C. Brand, Mrs. Nellie Cagle, of Ooltewah; Mrs. Bruce Mays, Frances, Addie Ruth, Rosebud, and Shirley Ann Longley of Apison; six sons, J. W. and C. L. Longley of Apison; Walter, Menlo, GA; John, Dallas, TX; Mendel and L. P. of Apison; sixteen grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Funeral arrangements will be announced.

5. Lula Dell3 Longley (Thomas2, James1) was born on 31 Aug 1867 at MO. She married Andrew J. Ikard on 23 Jul 1889. She died on 21 Jun 1935 at Archer City, Archer Co., TX, at age 67.

Children of Lula Dell3 Longley and Andrew J. Ikard were:
i. Dodye4; m. Jesse W. Combs; she and Jesse W. Combs were divorced; b. circa 1895? at Archer City, TX.
She lived in 1972 at Wichita Falls, TX; DAR No. 570153.

6. Nellie Jane3 Longley (Thomas2, James1) was born on 13 Jan 1892 at Archer Co., TX. She married John Wright Kilcrease circa 1910. She died on 20 Jun 1958 at Amarillo, TX, at age 66.

Children of Nellie Jane3 Longley and John Wright Kilcrease were:
i. Dorothye LaNell4; m. James Andrew Knight; b. 25 Aug 1912 at Bowie, TX.

7. James William3 Longley (Preston2, James1) married Dessie Ada Bennett. He was born on 28 Jan 1880 at GA. He died on 18 Jul 1962 at Apison, Hamilton Co., TN, at age 82.

Children of James William3 Longley and Dessie Ada Bennett were as follows:
9. i. Millard Bennett4, m. Mattie Mildred Smith; b. 19 Jan 1906 at Apison, Hamilton Co., TN.
ii. Orlando; b. circa 1910?
iii. Felker; b. 25 Dec 1913; d. 17 May 1977 at age 63.

8. Rolly Mendel3 Longley (Preston2, James1) was born circa 1928. He died circa 1991 at Kalamazoo, MI.

 

Generation Four

9. Millard Bennett4 Longley (James3, Preston2, James1) married Mattie Mildred Smith. He was born on 19 Jan 1906 at Apison, Hamilton Co., TN. He died on 31 May 1993 at Chattanooga, TN, at age 87; obituary:

 M. B. "Buddy" Longley, 87, of East Ridge, died Monday in a local hospital. He was a member of Brainerd Baptist Church and was retired from Chattanooga Venetian Blind Co. and was the brother of the late Felker Longley and the grandfather of the late Karen Longley. Survivors include his wife, Mattie S. Longley, and three sons David and Mark, Signal Mountain, Stephen Longley, Cleveland, Tenn.; brother, Hood Longley, Apison; five grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Chattanooga Memorial Gardens . . .
