Our Immigrant Ancestors settled first primarily in the Colony of Virginia, but also in Connecticut, New Jersey, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Maryland, North and South Carolina:

ALFORD ~ WILLIAM, transported from England to New Kent Co., VA in 1666 by John Davis, is prob. the WILLIAM whose death was recorded in St. Peters Parish Registry, New Kent, "WILLIAM ALFORD Departed this life ffebry ye 11th, 1709/10." As the early records stored in New Kent Court House for several Virginia counties burned, proof may never be found of his relationship to probable sons WILLIAM and JOHN. WILLIAM OFFERD on the list of New Kent Militia in 1702 is probably WILLIAM III, who died in Goochland Co., VA after 1730. On 22 Sep 1682, JOHN ALFORD and William Millington were granted 350 acres on "S. side of Yorke River. JOHN died in New Kent 14 Mar 1710, "John Alford Senr Departed this Life." He was through circumstantial evidence the father of JAMES ALFORD, the progenitor of our large family, mentioned many times in the Vestry Book and Register of St. Peters Parish -- the church is still in active use today and was the home church of Martha Washington. JAMES's son JULIUS's son JOHN's son ISAAC came to Texas by 1839 with several children, after oldest son WINFIELD came 1832 as an Austin Colonist.

ALLEN ~ James, Sr., born ca 1665 where? died bet 1 Apr-11 May 1733, West Nottingham, Cecil Co., MD. He left a will; he and wife MARY ____'s children were ANN, JOHN, MORRELL, JAMES Jr., WILLIAM, ISAAC, MARY, and NATHAN. Son MORRELL ALLEN born ca 1695 md. ALICE SCARLETT, daughter of SHADRACH SCARLETT and wife PHEBE BOWATER. MORRELL and ALICE'S daughter, PHEBE ALLEN, md. AMOS WILLIAMS in Chester Co., PA.

BAKER ~ HENRY (I) came from Surry Co., England in 1600s and died 28 Jul 1712 in Isle of Wight Co., VA. He and wife MARY BLAKE (dau. of JOHN) had a son HENRY BAKER (II) who had a 2200 acre Virginia Land Patent called Buckland, along the border of VA and NC. The house he built on it in 1695 still stands. About 1712 he invited surveyor William Byrd to dinner, convinced him that his 2200 acres of land should be in NC, and Byrd resurveyed and changed the line (as mentioned in his diary) between the two colonies. HENRY II died in Chowan Co., NC 1 May 1739. He had several children, and by 2nd wife ANGELICA BRAY a daughter CATHERINE "CATIE," who married Capt. JOHN WIGGINS (our forebears), eloped through window, "great aunt Caty represented to be a large bouncing girl as most of the Baker girls were in olden times, eloped through that small window (what cannot love accomplish) with Mr. Wiggins. Her remains are resting side by side with Mr. Wiggins under a pear tree in Wiggins' old field of Wiggins Swamp," from a story written 1847 by Simmons Jones Baker.

BODINE - JEAN, Sr., Huguenot, born ca 1620 in Cambray, France, and wife MARIA CREISON, born Dieppe, Flanders, France, and sons Daniel, Francois, and JEAN, Jr. (born 9 May 1645, Bethune, Saintonge Province, France) immigrated to Staten Island, NY, before 3 Nov 1677. There MARIA died 1677, JEAN Sr. died 1695, and JEAN, Jr. married 1st MARIA CROCHERON from the Netherlands and had 8 children, and 2nd ESTHER BRIDON, widow of an unrelated Jean Bodine (1619-1704) daughter of FRANCOIS BRIDON and JEANNE SUSANNE _____, and had 4 more children, including our forebear, FRANCOIS BODIN.

BORER-BORRER-BORROR ~ JACOB I, Though I am not a Borer descendant, many of my cousins are. MARTIN BORER and wife KATIE KELLY went with a colony of religious missionaries to New Dawn, IL, from northern VA, a thousand-mile trek over the Appalachians and down the Ohio and up the Mississippi. They had at least two sons, JACOB and ELIJAH BORER md. as her 3rd husb Mrs. CELIA WILLIAMS KITCHELL DRAPER, son of AARON WILLIAMS, Sr., and wife CHARITY NATION.

BOURCHIER ~ MARY, daughter of Sir JOHN BOURCHIER, a member of The Virginia Company, married JABEZ WHITAKER prob. 1616 in England, and joined Jabez at Jamestown, VA ca 1626. Sir JOHN BOURCHIER was a descendant of the WINGFIELDs (see WINGFIELD family), eight signers of the Magna Carta besides King John, of William the Conqueror and several of his knights, numerous kings of European nations, and Emperor of the West Charlemagne through some of his children. Charlemagne of course descended from the Roman Mark Anthony and his 1st wife Julia Caesar. (Yes, the Mark Anthony who married Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt.)

BURGE ~ JOHN and son THOMAS (born in London 1675 to JOHN and MARY, christened 30 Sep 1676); JOHN arrived in VA unmarried; he md. by 1677 a widow MARY HILLMAN, possibly mother of WILLIAM BURGE whose small estate THOMAS administered beg. 13 Jun 1727. THOMAS had a son WILLIAM still living and named in his will written 1751. JOHN died bef 9 May 1693 in VA, when his estate was sold. THOMAS was listed on the Charles City Co. Militia Roster in 1702, just before Prince George Co. was separated; was still a resident of Westover Parish; his first land records in 1712 near Petersburg, VA. THOMAS md. 1st MARY MAY 8 Jul 1697, who had 7 of his 17 children; and 2nd MARY ___ ca 1724. When she probated his will 14 Apr 1752 in Prince George Co., VA; he left 17 living children, some of their births recorded in Bristol Parish. THOMAS's son JOHN BURGE was born ca 1700 in VA; in 1750 at Amelia Co., VA, he and wife FRANCES ___ gave a gift deed to their son RICHARD, "for natural love and affection for son, 200 acres . . .," the father of SARAH BURGE who md. REUBEN HARRISON ca 1780 in Fairfield Co., SC.

CAMPBELL ~ JOHN, was banished from Scotland and sailed 5 Sep 1685 on the Henry and Francis from Leitram to East Jersey. He patented on 9 Nov 1685, 1874 acres in Hunterdon/Somerset Cos., NJ. He settled in Frehold, Monmouth Co., NJ but later moved to Philadelphia, PA. He owned property in NJ and PA when he died 1731 in Philadelphia Co., PA. An Indenture signed by his Heirs named all his children and sons-in-law and their residences, his widow CHARITY, and her new husband, George Davidson. Daughter MARY and husband JOSEPH LANGLEY signed in Hunterdon Co., NJ, 1 May 1732.

CHARLEMAGNE, Emperor of the West, King of the Franks ~ Ancestor of several of our immigrants. We descend from him through several ancestral lines including BOURCHIER, EXUM, LAWRENCE, McKINNIE, POPE, WHITAKER, WINGFIELD, WRIGHT. CHLOE POPE, who married JOHN ALFORD circa 1773 in NC, was the 33rd great-granddaughter of Charlemagne, Emperor of the West, through several of his son King Pepin of Italy's children. THOMAS WINGFIELD (1664-1720) was the 34th great-grandson of the Charlemagne. MARY "Polly" WHITAKER was the 28th, 29th, & 30th great-granddaughter of Charlemagne.

CHEW ~ JOHN, born 15 July 1587 in Chewton, Somersetshire, England, came over in the Charitie and wife SARAH GALE followed in the Sea Flower which returned to England in 1622, appears to be the first of this name in America. A member of the Virginia House of Assembly in 1623 as a Burgess from Jamestown, described in a land grant the same year as "John Chew, Merchant," he was later a Burgess from Hogg's Island, opposite Jamestown, and in the Assembly until 1642-1644 from York Co. One of their sons, JOHN CHEW, Jr., probably born in England before they immigrated, and wife ANN GATES, md. 1650 in Hingham, MA, is our line of descent.

DAUGHERTY ~ MICHAEL MOR, born 1690 in Lagan Valley, Inishowen, Co. Donegal, Ireland, wife CATHERINE, and three sons WILLIAM, MICHAEL II, and CHARLES immigrated ca 10 Dec 1728, in New Castle, Delaware, on or soon after the day King George II was proclaimed, may have accompanied or soon followed a group from Ulster which became established at Chestnut Level, Lancaster Co., PA (until 1729 part of Chester Co.); in 1737, MICHAEL MOR was in Newlondon, Derry, Chester Co., PA, where he kept a store. In 1738, he settled in Augusta Co., VA, in what is now Rockbridge Co., on Borden's Great Grant; in 1742 was in Capt. John Buchanan's militia company listed as Michael O'Doeherty; in 1747 was appointed constable, and in 1761 three of the Dougherty boys were on the militia list. Michael died in 1761. Son WILLIAM the blacksmith, born ca 1712 at Muff, Inishowen, Co. Donegal, md. ELIZABETH BUNCH and settled on Cowpasture River, Augusta (now Bath) Co., VA between 1738-1743; he died 6 Jul 1773 in Montgomery Co., VA. MICHAEL II, born 1714 at Lifford, Inishowen, Donegal, md. MARY CLARK and died 1789 in Montgomery Co., VA. Their children included Capt. JOHN DAUGHERTY, earliest of the family in Kentucky, 1775. Our ancestor CHARLES, born ca 1716, Lagan Valley, Donegal, md. REBECCA CUNNINGHAM(?) and was killed by Indians 17 Jul 1763, on Kerr Creek, Augusta Co., VA, in what became Rockbridge Co. Their children were in Lincoln Co., KY by 1785.

DUNCAN ~ PETER,born in 1633 in Scotland, md. BESSIE CALDWELL on 2 Jun 1646 at Scotland? He bought land on the East side of Nomony River in Westmoreland Co., VA, 6 Oct 1665. He gave a "Deposition of PETER DUNKEN aged 37 yeares or thereabout told him that Abraham Hewes, Master of ship Industrie of Bristoll, . . " dated 28 Sep 1670. He died in Sep 1676 at Westmoreland Co., VA. Their daughter ELIZABETH DUNCAN who md. GEORGE HARRISON in Westmoreland Co. is our forebear.

HARRISON ~ JOHN?, who in 1654 patented 1000 acres in Westmoreland Co., VA (his will has not been found), may have been the father of GEORGE HARRISON of Westmoreland who md. ELIZABETH DUNCAN, daughter of PETER DUNCAN and BESSIE CALDWELL. GEORGE made his will 2 Oct 1713 in Westmoreland Co., proved 25 Nov 1713. . ." GEORGE and ELIZABETH's son JAMES is our forebear.

KIRKLAND ~ RICHARD, Sr., came to Maryland, bef Dec 1699 when the administer of William Brown's estate made payment to him. He was probably the brother of Robert Kirkland whose son Edward was baptized 19 Dec 1692 at All Hallows Par., Anne Arundel Co., MD, for in 1705 Robert's son Richard was baptized at All Hallows. RICHARD, Sr., patented 100 acres in Baltimore Co. in Jun 1702; sold land in 1704; in Jul 1708 he and wife MARY "late of Baltimore Co." sold 200 acres and 100 acres in Anne Arundel Co.; in Oct 1708 they appointed a friend as their attorney to complete the sale. In Nov 1714 RICHARD, Sr., was granted by Lord Fairfax a 268 acre tract on the north side of Occaquon River in Truro Par., Stafford Co., VA (now Prince William Co.), a Northern Neck grant. In 1734 and 1735 he was granted 351 acres and 200 acres in what had become Prince George Co., VA. In 1740 he was mentioned in Pohick Church, Lorton, Truro Par., Fairfax Co., as taking an apprentice. He gave his oldest son Edward a gift deed for 100 acres of the 268 acre tract. and his son Richard Snowden Kirkland 100 acres of the 268 acre tract in 1740. RICHARD, Sr., wrote his will in Fairfax Co., VA in Nov 1742 and it was recorded in May 1743.

Our line of descent is through Richard and Mary's son RICHARD SNOWDEN KIRKLAND, who as "Richard Kirtling Junr" was granted 290 acres in the Northern Neck, Stafford Co., VA in 1730. He md. MARY BROWN and they had six children. He sold his land in Fairfax Co. in Feb 1746 and moved near his brother John in Granville Co., NC, where he received a 300-acre grant in Jun 1748, which he sold in Sep 1749. Abt 1750-52 Richard and his brothers were among early settlers in Camden Dist., SC, including his oldest daughter, NANCY ANN KIRKLAND (b. ca 1722) who md. WILLIAM HARRISON abt 1740 in Fairfax Co., VA.

KITCHELL ~ ROBERT was born 25 Oct 1601 in Hayes or Rolvenden, Kent, England, md. MARGARET SHEAFFE in Cranbrook, Co. Kent, or Canterbury, England, and left England 20 Apr 1639 with Puritan refugees in 1st vessel, The Arabella, that anchored in Quinnipiac Harbor, now New Haven, CT. On the voyage he signed the Plantation Covenant with the Puritans. Their son SAMUEL KITCHELL had three daughters by his 1st wife Elizabeth Wakeman, and md. GRACE PIERSON 6 Dec 1666 in Branford, CT. Samuel, Grace, and her parents Dr. (Rev.) ABRAHAM PIERSON and ABIGAIL WHEELWRIGHT (from Yorkshire) left CT because of religious differences and settled in Essex Co., NJ in time for enumeration in its 1670 census.

SAMUEL and GRACE's son ABRAHAM KITCHELL (born 1679 in NJ) was the progenitor of most of the Kitchells in the United States. He md. SARAH BRUEN, daughter of JOHN BRUEN (born 2 Jun 1646, Gloucester, MA) and ESTHER LAWRENCE (born 1 Jun 1651), who md. 9 Mar 1669 in Newark, Essex Co., NJ. JOHN BRUEN's parents OBADIAH BRUEN and ANN FOX from Cheshire and Salopshire Cos., England, were in MA by 1646. Abraham and Sarah moved to Hanover, Morris Co., NJ, and had seven children. PHINEAS KITCHELL, the only Kitchell neighbor of our gr-gr-gr-grandmother CELIA WILLIAMS in IL when her daughter SARAH KITCHELL was born, was a great-grandson of two of ABRAHAM's sons: JOHN KITCHELL (b. 1711) & wife KEZIAH BALL; and JOSEPH KITCHELL (b. 1713) & wife SARAH BATES. SARAH KITCHELL (1823-1905) md. JAMES GREEN in AR ca 1840.

LANGLEY/LONGLEY ~ JOHN who purchased land in 1689 in Gloucester Co., NJ,and died in 1699, when his widow SUSANNAH sold the land, is as far as we've gone back ~ whether John was an immigrant, son, or grandson of immigrants. JOHN and SUSANNAH are the only known candidates for parents of THOMAS LANGLEY of Gloucester Co. THOMAS and wife MARY CHEW were probably parents of JOSEPH LANGLEY, Sr., who married MARY CAMPBELL and lived in Hunterdon Co., NJ. JOSEPH and MARY apparently died in Hunterdon Co. prior to 1634 when their son JOSEPH, Jr., appeared in Loudoun Co., VA. JOSEPH's son WILLIAM LONGLEY served from Loudoun Co., in the Revolutionary war. WILLIAM headed down the Shenandoah Valley and was in Sevier Co., TN by 1800, while his brother JOSEPH settled in Rockingham Co., VA.

LAWRENCE ~ ROBERT I (son of Sir JOHN LAWRENCE and GRISSELL GIBBONS) was born circa 1616 at England, md. ELIZABETH ____ before 1639, and died after 1660 probably at Nansemond Co., VA. Their children were Robert II, George, and JOHN whose great-granddaughter MOURNING McKINNIE md. Maj. JOHN POPE. Their daughter SARAH POPE md. her cousin JOHN POPE and their daughter CHLOE POPE married JOHN ALFORD and was the mother of our forebear ISAAC, John, Jacob, Patty, Abraham, Thomas, and Bethana Alford. Their son CHARLES POPE married ELEANOR WRIGHT, daughter of WINGFIELD WRIGHT, Sr., son of JOHN WRIGHT, Jr. and RUTH WINGFIELD.

MAGILL ~ WILLIAM I, born 1670 in Oxenfurd, Calloway Co., Scotland, immigrated to Bucks Co., PA, in 1727 with his brothers John and Charles from Tullycaran, Co. Down, Ireland (south of Belfast). They were sons of Sir ROBERT MAGILL III, Viscount of Oxenfurd, staunch Presbyterian, who in 1715 left Scotland for Ireland with family. WILLIAM and his 1st wife Mary Eakin, and their family were in Augusta Co., VA when its records began in 1745. He or their more likely their son William II was a road overseer in Feb 1745, appointed constable in Nov 1746. He md. 2nd (bef 1745) Elizabeth Bell, and 3rd bef Nov 1749 Margaret Gass. WILLIAM wrote his will 29 Nov 1749 and died bef 29 Nov 1749 when it was recorded, for on that date Margaret McGill, relict of William McGill, renounced all benefit or advantage under her husband's will. WILLIAM MAGILL II, the oldest son, inherited half his father's estate.

MOTTROM/MOTTRUN ~ Col. JOHN, immigrated to VA by 1650 when he was granted 963 acres. One of the founders of Northumberland Co., he was its first representative to the Virginia House of Burgesses. His daughter ANNE md. Capt. RICHARD WRIGHT in 1657 at Chicacoan, Northumberland Co., VA. At MOTTROM's death later that year, RICHARD WRIGHT was made administrator.

NATION ~ JOHN, Sr. (son of JOHN NATION 1st and FRANCES PARSONS), born 28 Mar 1697 at N. Petherton, Somersets., England, was an indentured servant boy in will of William Beaks. He married BETHIA ROBINS, daughter of JOSEPH ROBINS, Sr. and ANNA (Hanna) PACK, in 1720 at Monmouth Co., NJ. On 1 Oct 1749 JOHN lived at Frederick Co., VA, Opekon Run or Creek; in 1754 at Rowan Co., NC; out of which Guilford Co. was created, and he died ca 1774 at Guilford Co., NC. He left a will dated 15 Dec 1772 at Guilford Co., NC; named 3 sons, 4 daughters, witnessed by 2 men named Beeson, "Will of JOHN NATION, Senior, 15 Dec 1772." 7 Children: ELIZABETH, CHRISTOPHER, JOHN Jr., JOSEPH, ANN, BETHIA, and FRANCES ~ four of whom md. Robins. Their son CHRISTOPHER's son JOSEPH was the father of CHARITY NATION who md. AARON WILLIAMS, Sr.

POPE ~ WILLIAM (son of RICHARD a soapmaker) was born ca 1634 at Bristol, England; md. MARIE BOZMAN (some say Bridges) in 1660 at VA. He returned to Bristol, England, for visit just before his death in 1706 at Nansemond Co., VA, as stated by son WILLIAM (Jr.). His brothers NATHANIEL came to Virginia as a representative of the English Crown; THOMAS and RICHARD Jr., also came to VA and transported some other persons; while JOHN remained in Bristol. NATHANIEL's daughter ANNE married Col. JOHN WASHINGTON and was the great-grandmother of George Washington. THOMAS POPE's estate was probated in England, "merchant, lands lying in Virginia, Probate to Richard Gotley with similar powers reserved to Charles Jones."

ROBINS (Robinson) ~ DANIEL, born circa 1627 at Blair Athol, Perth, Scotland, md. HOPE POTTER, daughter of WILLIAM POTTER and FRANCES CHILD 10 Feb 1663 at New Haven, CT, and died in Aug 1714 at Monmouth Co., NJ. Their sons DANIEL born Nov 1666 and JOSEPH, Sr., born __. Many descendants of this family intermarried with the NATION and VICKERY families, as did those of ISAAC ROBINS from Wales, who settled in the same NC counties before moving on to TN, etc.

 ROCHELLE ~ RALPH (2nd to distinguish him from RALPH 1st, possible father, in Surry Co., VA by 1663, acquired 200 acres by patent in Charles City Co., VA in Jan 1670, resided in Surry, and died by Dec 1679, leaving his widow ELIZABETH as executrix) ~ French Huguenot, born ca 1660-65, mentioned as transportee in Patent granted Ralph WALLIS, 1000 acs. Lower Norfolk Co., Trans. of 20 pers incl. RALPH RATCHELL (Patent Book, pp. 332, 705), md. ELIZABETH __ ca 1709; died aft Apr 1748 whem a Surry Co. deed mentioned, "adjoining Ralph Rochelle." Residing in Surry Co. like RALPH 1st and family, he probably was kin and may have been a son. He immigrated before 27 Apr 1686 to Merchant Brandon Par., VA, and on 20 Apr 1689 to Lower Norfolk Co., VA. Children RALPH ROCHELLE (Jr.), and JOHN ROCHELLE (unproven), born circa 1715 at VA?; md. ELIZABETH BOONE.

ROSS ~ GEORGE, Sr., born 1629 in Scotland, was captured at the Battle of Dunbar (Scotland) in 1650, marched with thousands of others south to be imprisoned for a long, cold winter without heat or adequate food or clothing in Dumbarton Cathedral, which many did not survive; and then he was exiled to Boston, MA. After working out his passage money at Saugus Iron Works, he removed in 1657 to New Haven Colony, CT, and was listed as a freeman. There he was married to CONSTANCE LITTLE by the Governor, 7 Dec 1658. GEORGE and CONSTANCE moved to Essex Co., NJ, in 1670 with their five children, including our forebear, GEORGE, Jr. He held several public offices.

SNOWDEN ~ Capt. RICHARD, Sr., a Quaker born in Wales 1639, immigrated to the Port of Baltimore Co., MD, in 1658. He is believed to be the son of Richard Snowden. "A tradition exists that Maj. Richard Snowden, of Wales, who held a commission under Cromwell, was our immigrant." By Dec 1665 he settled in Anne Arundel Co., MD, where he bought and was granted huge tracts of land. In 1679 he claimed a tract of iron-ore land called the Iron Mine, on South River. The book ANNE ARUNDEL AND HOWARD FOUNDERS describes not only the ruins of "Birmingham" in Anne Arundel Co. but also a "Montpelier" across the Patuxent in Prince George's Co., MD. His son Richard Snowden, Jr., md. Mary Linthicum and their son Richard the younger was a large landowner, merchant, iron master, and proprietor of Patuxent Iron Works. By tradition, RICHARD the elder and 2nd wife ELIZABETH GROSSE's daughter MARY SNOWDEN md. RICHARD KIRKLAND, Sr., but no proof of her or the marriage has been found.

VICKERY ~ JOHN, sailed to America from Exeter, Devon, England, as an indentured servant abt Sep 1681. In Feb 1682 he obtained a warrant for 400 acres in Kent Co., PA (now Delaware), but in Sep 1683 was taken to VA as an indentured servant. Meanwhile, in Feb 1684 the 400 acre patent in Kent Co., PA was surveyed and recorded Jul 1684. The usual period of indenture was four years, and in 1695, Dorchester Co., MD (now Caroline Co., created from Dorchester in 1773), JOHN patented 200 acres and named it "Bristol" (perhaps that's where he was from?). He and his unknown 1st wife had a son JOHN VICKERY, Jr. abt 1670, who md. ANNE ____ and had a son HEZEKIAH ca 1690. Hezekiah and his wife MERCI HOLLAND moved to Orange Co., VA, where Hezekiah wrote his will in Oct 1736. The inventory of his estate mentioned neighbor JOHN NATION, whose daughter ELIZABETH NATION md. HEZEKIAH's son MARMADUKE VICKERY. Marmaduke and Elizabeth's daughter JERETTA VICKERY md. her 1st cousin JOSEPH NATION, Sr., and they were the parents of CHARITY NATION who md. AARON WILLIAMS, Sr.

WARREN ~ WILLIAM was born 1586 in Poynton, Stockport, Cheshire, England, 5th child of Sir EDWARD WARREN, Knight, and ANNE DAVENPORT. He immigrated in 1625 to Jamestown, VA, probably as a gentleman adventurer, paying his and Nathaniel (possible son or nephew) Warren's passage. He may have been accompanied by a brother Thomas Warren who settled further up the James River in Charles City Co. In 1633-35 he represented York Co. in the VA House of Burgesses, of which he was Speaker. He md. 2nd wife ANN BECKER bef 13 Mar 1633 when MARTIN BECKER (probably her father) of Plymouth, England, Merchant, leased for life of WILLIAM WARREN & ANN "his now new wife land in York." In Apr 1635 William held a public meeting at his house to consider the conduct of Governor Harvey in approving the murder of Lt. Radcliffe Warren, William's half-brother in the Army of Virginia, 2nd in command on Kent Island in 1635. In 1642 William patented 650 acres in York Co. on N. side of the Charles River. He died in Yorktown 16 Apr 1644, probably killed in Opechancanough Indian attack. His son JOHN R. WARREN, born 1635 in Old Rappahannock Co., VA md. RACHEL WILLIAMS. He was an employee of Thomas Hawkins, a merchant, mariner, land speculator, militia officer, Burgess and court justice of Old Rappahannock Co. He died intestate in Westmoreland Co., VA while visiting there; his body was found and the coroner investigated his death and reported to the court; John was buried in the St. Anne's Parish Church Ceme., whre Occupacia Creek flows into the Rappahannock Riverby Sep 1661. Their son WLLIAM WARREN md. ELIZABETH HACKLEY and their son SAMUEL was the gr-gr-grandfather of my gr-gr-grandmother AGNES WARREN who md. ROBERT HIRAM DAUGHERTY in Lincoln Co., KY in 1849 (so I'm a 12th generation Warren descent in America).

WHITAKER ~ Capt. JABEZ, born 1596 prob. at Cambridge, England, came to VA 1611 with his brother ALEXANDER. They were the youngest and oldest sons of Rev. WILLIAM WHITAKER, D.D., eminent Puritan theologian, Master of St. John's College, Cambridge University. Capt. JABEZ, our forebear, built at James City a guest house for the reception of newcomers, which was sometimes used to isolate the sick and in effect, the first hospital in America. In 1624 he became a member of the Virginia House of Burgesses and a Capt.; in 1626 a member of the Colonial Council of Virginia, invented the familiar Virginia rail fence, and married MARY, daughter of Sir JOHN BOURCHIER. JABEZ's older brother, ALEXANDER, called "the Apostle of Virginia," converted and baptized Pocohantas in Jamestown, 1613 (portrayed in a painting which hangs in the Capitol in Washington), performed her wedding to John Rolfe, preached to the colony at Henrico in St. John's Church later moved to Richmond, and drowned in the James River in 1617, never married.

WIGGINS ~ Capt. JOHN, born ca 1716, "was an Englishman who came over and settled on the Roanoke River, Martin Co., NC, about 50 years before the Revolution. He was a very large landlord running from Enfield to Hamilton. His mother was a STUART. His wife was Miss Baker," CATHERINE "CATIE" BAKER, daughter of Henry BAKER and ANGELICA BRAY, ca 1734; JOHN md. 2nd Mrs. ELIZABETH BEVINS on 30 Sep 1766 at Bertie Co., NC; "JOHN WIGGINS, planter from Halifax Co. to Mrs. BEVINS, a widow." He died on 15 Jul 1786 in Martin Co., NC.

WILLIAMS ~ ELLIS, a Quaker, was born 1621 in Marion, Pembrokeshire, Wales, immigrated to New Castle, DE, and died 19 Apr 1691 in Merion, Chester Co., PA. Ellis and his wife ELLIN had two sons, ROBERT born 1647 in Wales, and JAMES born ca 1655 probably in DE. ROBERT on 5 Sep 1672 filed a complaint about "one of ye souldyrs at New Castle." He bought land 1681 at or near Goshen Mo. Mtg. house, Goshen Twp. in Chester Co., PA, and was a widower when he md. Gwen Cadwallader there on 18 Apr 1691. They had 10 children and Robert died at Goshen in 1734. Our forebear JAMES on 9 Nov 1676 ". . . to appraise attached house of Anthony Hendrix" in New Castle Co., DE, was in 1677 a juror, in 1678 on tax list, between 1682-84 a member of the Assembly, in 1685 Justice of the Peace, in 1685 a member of the Assembly. About that time, he and wife MARY moved to Chester Co., PA, for in Feb 1685 "James and Hendrick Williams were members of the Province of Pennsylvania as members of the Governor's Council." We descend from their son ZACHARIAS, born ca 1700 at Chester Co., PA, who md. ANNE ELLETT 30 May 1733 at Christ Church, Philadelphia, PA. Their son AMOS md. PHEBE ALLEN (daughter of Morrell Allen and Alice Scarlett) and left PA on certificate from Sadsbury Mo. Mtg. to settle in NC, but took several years to get there; then moved on to Greene Co., TN. AMOS and PHEBE were, by circumstantial evidence, the parents of AARON WILLIAMS, Sr., who md. CHARITY NATION.

WINGFIELD ~ THOMAS of York River, VA (son of Sir JOHN WINGFIELD, York Herald, and MARY OWEN) was born on 20 Mar 1664 at Tickencote, Rutlandshire, England, baptized on 29 Mar 1664 at St. Benet's, Paul's Wharf, London, England, md. 1st MARY _____ circa 1690, md. 2nd MARY ____ circa 1718, and died 19 Dec 1720 at St. Peters Par., New Kent Co., VA. Children recorded at St. Peters Par. 1693-1702 were RUTH, THOMAS, JOHN, ROBERT, MARY, and ELIZABETH.

WRIGHT ~ Brothers WILLIAM and Capt. RICHARD, born Bolton-on-Swayle, Yorkshire, England, immigrated to Northumberland Co., VA in 1654, transported by NATHANIEL POPE from Bristol, England, whose daughter ANNE md. Col. JOHN WASHINGTON. Anne's daughter ANNE POPE WASHINGTON md. RICHARD's son Maj. FRANCIS WRIGHT. WILLIAM WRIGHT was the forebear of JOHN WRIGHT, Jr. who md. RUTH WINGFIELD, great-grandparents of ALICE WRIGHT, believed to have md. ISAAC ALFORD ca 1810? in NC or TN.
