III, who died in Goochland Co.,
VA after 1730. On 22 Sep 1682, JOHN
ALFORD and William Millington
were granted 350 acres on "S. side of Yorke River. JOHN
died in New Kent 14 Mar 1710, "John Alford Senr
Departed this Life." He was through circumstantial evidence
the father of JAMES
ALFORD, the progenitor of our
large family, mentioned many times in the Vestry Book and Register
of St. Peters Parish -- the church is still in active use today
and was the home church of Martha
Washington. JAMES's
son JULIUS's son JOHN's son ISAAC came to Texas by 1839 with several children,
after oldest son WINFIELD came 1832 as an Austin Colonist.

JOHN) had a son HENRY BAKER (II) who had a 2200 acre Virginia
Land Patent called Buckland, along the border of VA and NC. The
house he built on it in 1695 still stands. About 1712 he invited
surveyor William Byrd to dinner, convinced him that his 2200 acres
of land should be in NC, and Byrd resurveyed and changed the line
(as mentioned in his diary) between the two colonies. HENRY II died in Chowan Co., NC 1 May 1739. He had
several children, and by 2nd wife ANGELICA BRAY a daughter CATHERINE "CATIE," who married Capt. JOHN WIGGINS (our forebears), eloped through
window, "great aunt Caty represented to be a large bouncing
girl as most of the Baker girls were in olden times, eloped through
that small window (what cannot love accomplish) with Mr. Wiggins.
Her remains are resting side by side with Mr. Wiggins under a
pear tree in Wiggins' old field of Wiggins Swamp," from a
story written 1847 by Simmons Jones Baker.

circa 1773 in NC, was the 33rd great-granddaughter of Charlemagne,
Emperor of the West, through several of his son King Pepin of Italy's

WINGFIELD (1664-1720) was the 34th
great-grandson of the Charlemagne. MARY "Polly" WHITAKER was the 28th, 29th, & 30th great-granddaughter
of Charlemagne.
CHEW ~ JOHN, born 15 July 1587 in Chewton, Somersetshire,
England, came over in the Charitie and wife SARAH
GALE followed
in the Sea Flower which returned to England in 1622, appears
to be the first of this name in America. A member of the Virginia
House of Assembly in 1623 as a Burgess from Jamestown, described
in a land grant the same year as "John Chew,
Merchant,"
he was later a Burgess from Hogg's Island, opposite Jamestown,
and in the Assembly until 1642-1644 from York Co. One of their

where he kept a store. In 1738, he settled in Augusta Co., VA,

was in Capt. John Buchanan's militia company listed as Michael O'Doeherty; in 1747 was appointed constable, and in 1761
three of the Dougherty boys were on the militia list. Michael

RICHARD, Sr., patented 100 acres in Baltimore
Co. in Jun 1702; sold land in 1704; in Jul 1708 he and wife MARY "late of Baltimore Co." sold 200
acres and 100 acres in Anne Arundel Co.; in Oct 1708 they appointed
a friend as their attorney to complete the sale. In Nov 1714 RICHARD, Sr., was granted by Lord Fairfax
a 268 acre tract on the north side of Occaquon River in Truro
Par., Stafford Co., VA (now Prince William Co.), a Northern Neck
grant. In 1734 and 1735 he was granted 351 acres and 200 acres
in what had become Prince George Co., VA. In 1740 he was mentioned
in Pohick Church, Lorton, Truro Par., Fairfax Co., as taking an
apprentice. He gave his oldest son Edward
a gift deed for 100 acres of the 268 acre tract. and his son Richard Snowden Kirkland 100 acres of the 268 acre

wife MARY CHEW were probably parents of JOSEPH LANGLEY, Sr.,

recorded, for on that date Margaret McGill, relict of William
McGill, renounced all benefit or advantage under her husband's

Col. JOHN WASHINGTON and was the great-grandmother of George Washington. THOMAS

ROSS ~ GEORGE, Sr., born 1629 in Scotland,
was captured at the Battle of Dunbar (Scotland) in 1650, marched
with thousands of others south to be imprisoned for a long, cold
winter without heat or adequate food or clothing in Dumbarton
Cathedral, which many did not survive; and then he was exiled
to Boston, MA. After working out his passage money at Saugus Iron
Works, he removed in 1657 to New Haven Colony, CT, and was listed
as a freeman. There he was married to CONSTANCE LITTLE by the Governor, 7 Dec 1658. GEORGE and CONSTANCE moved to Essex Co., NJ,
in 1670 with their five children, including our forebear, GEORGE, Jr. He held several public offices.
SNOWDEN ~ Capt. RICHARD, Sr., a Quaker born in Wales
1639, immigrated to the Port of Baltimore Co., MD, in 1658. He
is believed to be the son of Richard Snowden. "A tradition
exists that Maj. Richard Snowden, of Wales, who held a commission
under Cromwell, was our immigrant." By Dec 1665 he settled
in Anne Arundel Co., MD, where he bought and was granted huge
tracts of land. In 1679 he claimed a tract of iron-ore land called
the Iron Mine, on South River. The book ANNE ARUNDEL AND HOWARD
FOUNDERS describes not only the ruins of "Birmingham"
in Anne Arundel Co. but also a "Montpelier" across the
Patuxent in Prince George's Co., MD. His son Richard Snowden, Jr., md. Mary Linthicum and their son Richard
the younger was a large landowner, merchant, iron master, and
proprietor of Patuxent Iron Works. By tradition, RICHARD the elder
and 2nd wife ELIZABETH

been found.
VICKERY ~ JOHN, sailed to America from Exeter, Devon, England,
as an indentured servant abt Sep 1681. In Feb 1682 he obtained
a warrant for 400 acres in Kent Co., PA (now Delaware), but in
Sep 1683 was taken to VA as an indentured servant. Meanwhile,
in Feb 1684 the 400 acre patent in Kent Co., PA was surveyed and
recorded Jul 1684. The usual period of indenture was four years,
and in 1695, Dorchester Co., MD (now Caroline Co., created from
Dorchester in 1773), JOHN patented 200 acres and named
it "Bristol" (perhaps that's where he was from?). He
and his unknown 1st wife had a son JOHN VICKERY, Jr. abt 1670, who md. ANNE
____ and had a son HEZEKIAH ca 1690. Hezekiah and his
wife MERCI HOLLAND moved to Orange Co., VA,
where Hezekiah wrote his will in Oct 1736.

Jamestown, VA, probably as a gentleman adventurer, paying his
and Nathaniel (possible son or nephew) Warren's passage. He may
have been accompanied by a brother Thomas Warren who settled further
up the James River in Charles City Co. In 1633-35 he represented
York Co. in the VA House of Burgesses, of which he was Speaker.

on Kent Island in 1635. In 1642 William patented 650 acres in
York Co. on N. side of the Charles River. He died in Yorktown
16 Apr 1644, probably killed in Opechancanough Indian attack.

1635 in Old Rappahannock Co., VA md. RACHEL WILLIAMS. He was an employee of Thomas Hawkins, a
merchant, mariner, land speculator, militia officer, Burgess and
court justice of Old Rappahannock Co. He died intestate in Westmoreland
Co., VA while visiting there; his body was found and the coroner
investigated his death and reported to the court; John was buried
in the St. Anne's Parish Church Ceme., whre Occupacia Creek flows
into the Rappahannock Riverby Sep 1661. Their son WLLIAM WARREN md. ELIZABETH HACKLEY and their son SAMUEL
was the gr-gr-grandfather of my gr-gr-grandmother AGNES WARREN who md. ROBERT HIRAM DAUGHERTY in
Lincoln Co., KY in 1849 (so I'm a 12th generation Warren descent
in America).
WHITAKER ~ Capt. JABEZ, born 1596 prob. at Cambridge, England,
came to VA 1611 with his brother ALEXANDER.
They were the youngest and oldest sons of Rev. WILLIAM WHITAKER, D.D.,
eminent Puritan theologian, Master of St. John's College, Cambridge

James City a guest house for the reception of newcomers, which
was sometimes used to isolate the sick and in effect, the first
hospital in America. In 1624 he became a member of the Virginia
House of Burgesses and a Capt.; in 1626 a member of the Colonial
Council of Virginia, invented the familiar Virginia rail fence,
and married MARY, daughter of Sir JOHN BOURCHIER. JABEZ's older brother, ALEXANDER,
called "the Apostle of Virginia," converted and baptized
Pocohantas in Jamestown, 1613 (portrayed in a painting
which hangs in the Capitol in Washington), performed her wedding
to John Rolfe, preached to the colony at Henrico in St.
John's Church later moved to Richmond, and drowned in the James
River in 1617, never married.
WIGGINS ~ Capt. JOHN, born ca 1716, "was
an Englishman who came over and settled on the Roanoke River,
Martin Co., NC, about 50 years before the Revolution. He was a
very large landlord running from Enfield to Hamilton. His mother
was a STUART.

had two sons, ROBERT born 1647 in Wales, and
JAMES born ca 1655 probably in
DE. ROBERT on 5 Sep 1672 filed a complaint
about "one of ye souldyrs at New Castle." He bought
land 1681 at or near Goshen Mo. Mtg. house, Goshen Twp. in Chester
Co., PA, and was a widower when he md. Gwen Cadwallader there
on 18 Apr 1691. They had 10 children and Robert died at Goshen
in 1734. Our forebear JAMES on 9 Nov 1676 ". .
. to appraise attached house of Anthony Hendrix" in New Castle
Co., DE, was in 1677 a juror, in 1678 on tax list, between 1682-84
a member of the Assembly, in 1685 Justice of the Peace, in 1685
a member of the Assembly. About that time, he and wife MARY moved to Chester Co., PA, for in Feb 1685
"James and Hendrick Williams were members of the Province
of Pennsylvania as members of the Governor's Council." We
