William Macfie (1776-1854) wrote in his memorandum a postscript " William Macfie , my uncle an elder brother to my father built the house at Bridge end , Innerkip and resided long there , carrying on the business of joiner and wheelwright, and he had three children viz William , Robert (left no family, died about 1840) , Mary (died young)

Notes from the book John Macfie of Edinburgh and his family

' This particular letter (written about 1808) is an important one, for after putting forward his plea on behalf of his brother Alexander, he goes on to make an appeal on the behalf of his uncle Willam Macfie, who was clearly in very low water, `` harrassed with that firebrand his wife`` with an undutiful son, and loaded with the stigma of previous ingratitude'
. ( If in this life I am permitted, I will attempt to retrive a copy of the original letter from the family archives in Glasgow and make more or less direct quotes) (20/09/2003)

Notes from William Macfie (1776-1854)

William married Margaret of Largs, and his wife is still alive, they had children William ( plumber), Joseph ( our head cooper) , Mary ( now Mrs Rhind) ( no mention is made of John, who is listed on the IGI records as son of William and Margaret born 1795) ( either William had no recollection of this son John, or he also died young, or William (1776-1854) simply forgot, but as William was calculating descendants it seems odd that he simply forgot)

Notes from book :

' It is noteworthy , too that William Macfie and Joseph Macfie of the elder branch of the family gave them much assistance.'

In the 1841 census Margaret is living with her daughter  and her son-in-law James Rhind  on Springkell St, Liklys Court, Greenock , Margaret is listed as independent .She moved with them to Elgin,   passing away there in 1854.

William is listed as a plumber in Greenock, married to Agnes Swan, he has a partner named William who from all appearances is married to Ann Swan, sister of Agnes :

The 1841 Census shows William living  on East Stewart St. Greenock, Parish of East Greenock;  four females area listed  Lilly - 25 ,   Margaret- 20 , Marion - 15 and Elizabeth 10  are living with them :  given this we might assume that Agnes Sawn had passed away, or was no longer part of this family at the time the Census was taken , the Lilly Macfie who is listed apears to have been born outside of the Census county .

(Greenock Telegraph 09-03-1849) Elizabeth youngest daughter of William Macfie, plumber died at East Stewart St, Grennock on 6th mar 1849 aged 22 . ( Watt library BMD records)

.
                                           Jane Kertsh Macfarlane
                                                                       1857-

Jane is registered as born in Stirling, Scotland. This would certainly indicate that the MacFarlane family had moved away for the Greenock area . The IGI records show only one birth for this union, and this some 17 years after the date of marriage, surely there must be some explanation somewhere.

                                                    Elizabeth Macfie
                                                                                 1856-

Elizabeth is registered at birth in Glasgow , thus indicating that the Macfie family moved away from its origins. Again the IGI records show only one birth for this union and that , 13 years after the date of marriage.

Unable to take this line further, not enough information to match the female marriages. (20/09/2003)

( Greenock Telegraph- 05-08-1884)  John McFie former cork manufacturer, Greenock died at Rose Bank, Cardwell Bay, Gourock on 4th of August 1884 aged 87 - Watt Library BMD records

( Greenock Telegraph 15-07-1912) Janet , youngest daughter of John McFie cork cutter, Greenock, died at 24 Crichton St, Millport on 12th July 1912 -Watt Library BMD records

( Greenock Telegraph 19-01-1877) Mary Rayside eldest daughter of  John McFie cork manufacturer, died at 1 William St Greenock on 18th  January 1877 -Watt Library BMD records

The IGI records show this one particular union, indicating that Mary's father was John Macfie ; unfortunately we cannot state for certain that this is the correct assumption, however the dates appear to be close enough to allow some leeway in accepting this union as part of the family tree

Joseph was a cooper working at the sugar refinery and was removed to the the Liverpool operations when the family set up operations there.

Annabelle Macfie has her mother listed as Catherine McLeod, not Christian, but the father is definately Joseph Macfie

There is a record in the IGI files of a Joseph Macfie of 22 years of age marrying a Margaret Wallace, 19 years of age January 4th 1848. We could perhaps assume that this Joseph born about 1826 may have also been a son of Joseph Macfie and Christian McLeod, however no records have been found to colaborate the facts
