The Scott family originated in the same area as the Laing family Monymusk, Aberdeenshire Scotland. It is not known however if these two families knew one another or not hwever , James Laing the patriarch of the Laing family had been married to an Ann Scott of that area. We have not been able to take John Scott's line back far enough to determine if there was a relative common to Ann and John but as both familes appeared to have frequented the Chapel of Garioch, we can certainly assume that a connection may have existed at one time.
Of course the two familes would not know that in the next century the Laing and Scott would one again be connected by marriage but that is exaclty what happened. As far as can be determine Katherine Scott was born in Scotland, while her husband to be James Adam Laing was born in Chambly Quebec. It certainly could not be foreseen that the Laing family would move from thier original landing at Chambly, to the Buckingham area of Quebec which was but a short distance from the New Edinburgh town of Ontario ( now part of Ottawa).

The Scotts resided in New Edinburgh when they first arrived in Canada. It has been mentioned that the Scotts may have came over on the same boat as the Laings when they came to Canada. The Laings remained in Chambly, the Scotts moving to the Ottawa area however if this were true then Katherine Scott would have been born in Canada, and not in Scotland as the history of the Laing family has so often stated.

According to the 1881 census of Canada, Jessie Scott aged 63 and her children John (27) and Margaret (23) are living with her daughter Katherine and her family at the Laing residence in Ottawa Canada. There is a Jessie Scott listed on the 1871 Ontarios census in Ottawa district , Ottawa ward (E). . The listing shows the correct age but is made for a male and there are no other family members showing on the computer generated list ( perhaps a closer look at the original paper work will help)
