Please refer to the on-site Memorial Register Introduction to determine the alternative panel numbers if you do not find the name within the quoted Panels.
Location Information: Le Touret Memorial is located at the east end of Le Touret Military Cemetery, on the south side of the Bethune-Armentieres main road. From Bethune follow the signs for Armentieres until you are on the D171. Continue on this road through Essars and Le Touret village. Approximately 1 kilometre after Le Touret village and about 5 kilometres before you reach the intersection with the D947, Estaires to La Bassee road, the Cemetery lies on the right hand side of the road. The Memorial takes the form of a loggia surrounding an open rectangular court. The court is enclosed by three solid walls and on the eastern side by a colonnade. East of the colonnade is a wall and the colonnade and wall are prolonged northwards (to the road) and southwards, forming a long gallery. Small pavilions mark the ends of the gallery and the western corners of the court. The names of those commemorated are listed on panels set into the walls of the court and the gallery, arranged by Regiment, Rank and alphabetically by surname within the rank. It does not include the names of officers and men of Canadian or Indian regiments; they are found on the Memorials at Vimy and Neuve-Chapelle.

Ephraim Alex
Edward Ephraim Alex was also known as Ephraim/Edward Abraham Alex.4,5,1 He was born on 12 December 1800 at St Katherine, London England.6,7,8 He was the son of Solomon Alex and Rachael Jones.2 Edward Ephraim Alex was 'Founder of the Jewish Board of Guardians, London' and the following biography appears in the 'The Jewish Encyclopedia' by Goodman Lipkind:

'Founder of the Jewish Board of Guardians, London; born in Cheltenham, 1800; died in London, Nov. 13, 1882. He was a successful business man, which fact eminently fitted him for the great charitable work to which he chiefly devoted his attention—that connected with the wellknown Jewish Board of Guardians in London. To his ingenuity were due the practical steps which led up to the establishment of that institution; and to his zeal and public spirit, which he imparted to the community, were due its rapid development and perfect organization. A suggestion had indeed been made as early as 1802 by Joshua Van Oven to replace the loose and imperfect arrangement between the three German synagogues by a definite board of guardians for the Jewish poor. This suggestion was, however, lost sight of until 1858, when Alex was overseer of the Great Synagogue, and he became impressed with the inadequacy of the system for outdoor charity then prevailing. He ventilated the subject energetically before his own council and vestry as well as on various public occasions.

In February, 1859, he issued a circular proposing "a scheme for a board of guardians for the relief of the necessitous foreign poor." This scheme exhibited a great insight into the needs of the poor, as well as a comprehensive idea of the machinery necessary adequately to relieve them. The keynote of the circular and scheme was organization, and the subsequent development of the board has been strictly on the lines of Alex's original conception.

He was not a man of commanding intellect, but he possessed a genial and tactful disposition which attracted young men to the undertaking. He was the first president of the board, over which he continued to preside till 1869, when his physical infirmities compelled his retirement; as a member of the board, however, he continued to take part in its deliberations till the year of his death. He was also a life-member of the Council of the United Synagogue, and a member of the Committee of the Jews' Hospital in Mile End.9,10,11'

He lived in 1834; Torode says:

'The Alex family was associated with the local synagogue [in Cheltenham] from its earliest days and this connection continued well into the 1870s....... By 1834 he [Ephraim Alex] had moved to London. In 1853 he was elected Cheltenham's representative to the Board of Deputies of British Jews.12'

He married Catherine Jones, daughter of Aaron Jones and Nancy Benjamin, on 15 March 1840 at The Great Synagogue, Dukes Place, City of London England; and their entry in the Great Synagogue Marriage Register is as follows:

     'Groom's Surname: Alex
     Forename: Edward Ephraim
Hebrew Transliteration: Ephraim s. of Pinchas Zelig HaCohen*

     Bride's Surname: Barron Jones
     Forename: Catherine
Hebrew Transliteration: Yetta d. of Aharon'

Their marriage was registered in the March quarter 1840 at London Registration district.1,13,14,15
