See Wikipedia for an article on his life.5,6,7,8,9,3,4 He was the son of Abraham Albert Myer and Hannah Jones.2 Horatio Myer appeared on the census of 31 March 1851 at Bye Street, Hereford, Herefordshire England, as Oratio Myers, Son, age 10 months, birthplace Hereford.10 He appeared on the census of 7 April 1861 at Commercial Street, Hereford, Herefordshire England, as Son, age 10, birthplace Hereford.11 He was 'Engaged in wool trade, 1869-1875, and in shipping iron trade, 1876-1884; iron founder, 1876-1903; Member for Kennington, LCC, 1889-1904; MP (L) North Lambeth, 1906-1910'. He published a pamphlet on 'Taxation of Landlords' in 1869.8 He was believed to be referred to here:

'On 1st November 1876 Horatio Myer set up business in Vauxhall, London producing iron bedsteads and mattresses of woven wire...'

'Today Myer's are still manufacturing "comfortable beds" in their modern premises in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire. The site occupies 300,000 sqft on a 13 acre plot. This makes Myer's one of the largest manufacturing businesses in Huntingdon'

[Horatio's brother Granville Myer appears to have been a Bedstead Manufacturer in the 1901 census, so was apparently connected with the business around the turn of the century. His nephew Reginald Myer was an Assistant Manager in his father Granville's Bedstead Manufacturing company.]

A further biography gives the following information:

'On 1st November 1876 Horatio Myer (1850-1816) [sic] set up business in Vauxhall Walk, London producing iron bedsteads, brass bedsteads, iron cots and bedchairs. Horatio was the son of Abraham Myer of Cheltenham, a first generation settler from the Rhineland. Abraham set up business in Hereford as a pawnbroker, which developed into a jewellery, silversmith, watchmaker and clothing establishment. Abraham naturalised as a British citizen and even became a local town councillor!

At age nineteen Horatio entered the wool trade but by the time he was twenty-six he had moved to London to set up his own business. Why he decided on bedstead making is not clear but once he had his choice of a London base was for good sound commercial reasons. At the time Birmingham was the bedstead making capital of the UK but the biggest market was in the rapidly expanding London and the South East. So locating in London with its good road and rail connections saved on expensive transport costs.

Iron bedsteads had been made in Broad Street (now Black Prince Road) by John Thomas Butler and Joseph Smith till they sold their business to Arthur Smith in June 1874. Arthur Smith then moved the business the short distance to the Vauxhall Walk premises on Lady Day 1875 but sold it to Horatio on 1st November 1876. The Company name and the original name "Surrey Ironworks" still remains in mosaic on the outside of the main factory building.

It's probable that Horatio borrowed to raise the initial purchase price and working capital as the 1885 accounts show loans from his brother Grenville (who was running the family jewellery business), a £1000 from Charles Samuel and £6000 from his father in law Henry Joseph. The profits were shared equally between Horatio, Grenville and Henry. The family business became a limited company in 1901 with the family holding all the shares.

Apart from iron bedsteads the company also made brass ones and it seems anything else that brought in a profit including dumb-bells, scale weights, drainpipes, guttering, security grills and 'corset spirals'. Never the less Horatio managed to get involved with a corn and forage merchants, wine merchants and the Crown Iron Foundry in Peckham as well as becoming MP for North Vauxhall in 1906.

In 1911 a subsidiary company 'The Metal Trades Auxiliary Supply Co. Ltd' was set up in Bow to circumvent a price fixing group call the Metal Bedstead Association and various restrictive trade agreements between the Association and a trade union. Myers became a staunch opponent of the Association. The Bow company made brass and other bed components as well as photographic accessories, non-spill oil lamps and aeroplane parts till it closed in 1924.

Historically the joints of metal bedsteads had been formed in individual, single use, sand moulds by traditional casting techniques but technological advances around 1840 meant that reusable metal moulds revolutionised production techniques. The individual tubes making up the bed head or foot were now clamped upside down into a solidly made jig by the reusable moulds, then white hot molten casting metal was poured into the moulds (see foundry photo). After setting the now solid bed head was released from the moulds and cleaned up. Having been made upside down the 'pip' left by the filling hole was on the underside of the joint so less noticeable to the customer. The joints holding the bedsides to the bed head and foot uprights were often made of cast iron dovetail joins. At Vauxhall the mornings in the foundry were taken up trimming and cleaning the previous days work and the afternoons with the moulding process.

The mattress platform in the early beds was often simply made from metal lathes set out in various patterns. Around the turn of the century the metal lathes were replaced by various sprung wire mesh platforms often with arrangements to keep the mesh taught. The first mattress of "woven wire" was developed and added to the range in 1894 ...

The company had 19 employees in 1877 (turnover £6100), 84 in 1906 (turnover £50,398) rising to 224 in 1914 (turnover £106,600).12,13,14,15,8,16 '

He married Esther Joseph, daughter of Henry Joseph and Maria Samuel, on 28 November 1877 at 2 Lauderdale Road, Maida Vale, London England; and their marriage was registered in the December quarter 1877 at Kensington registration district.17,18,19,8 Horatio Myer appeared on the census of 3 April 1881 at 5 Randolph Gardens, Maida Vale, London England, as Head, age 30, birthplace Hereford, Herefordshire, and he was an 'Iron Founder'. He was advertising in the Situations Vacant column of The Birmingham Daily Post as follows: 'Bedstead Trade.—A good Painter Wanted.—Apply to Horatio Myer and Co., Surrey Ironworks and Brass and Iron Bedstead Manufactory, 97 (late 124), Vauxhill Walk, Lambeth, London, S.E.' on 28 May 1881.20 He was in the news as published in Lloyds Weekly Newspaper 'The Powers of the Petroleum Acts. In the interests of public safety it is necessary that the Petroleum Acts should be strictly enforced. The conviction of Horatio Myer, of Vauxhall-walk, who was fined 20l. yesterday for keeping a hundred gallons of naphtha on his premises without a licence, may prove a warning to users or sellers of this dangerous combustible. One of the grounds of defence was that the defendant was not aware that naphtha used in trade came within the definition of the Petroleum Act. This plea was of course, absurd, and the fact of a serious accident having already taken place on his premises from an explosion of the stuff ought to have suggested to Mr Myer the danger of transgressing the Act. It cannot be too widely known that the illicit storage of dangerous oils is liable to be punished by a cumulative fine of 20l. a day, and Mr Myer may think himself fortunate that the Board of Works was satisfied to vindicate its authority by pressing for a penalty for one day only.' on 19 July 1885.21,22 He appeared in the Daily News in the following item regarding his political career: ' The County Councils... Kennington—At a meeting of independent Radicals Mr Horatio Myer was unanimously adopted as the Reform and Radical candidate for the Kennington Division...' on 4 January 1889.23 He subsequently appeared in a more detailed item in The Daily News headed again 'The County Councils', '...Lambeth.—The borough of Lambeth with 34,038 voters, is divided into four divisions.—North Lambeth, Kennington, Brixton and Norwood. In the Kennington Division the Radicals have brought forward as their candidate Mr Horatio Myer, a large employer of labour, in place of Mr. Ritchie, who has retired from the contest...' on 7 January 1889.24 He was advertising in the Situations Vacant column of The Birmingham Daily Post as follows: 'Bedstead Trade.—Brass Rail Makers Wanted: Iron Rail Casters Wanted. The above to work with seventy-five men not in the union, and to replace twelve men called out by the union.— Horatio Myer and Co., 83-97, Vauxhill Walk, Albert Embankment, London, S.E.' and the same advertisement was repeated two days later on 26 June 1890.25 He was advertising in the Situations Vacant column of The Birmingham Daily Post as follows: 'Bedstead Trade.—No more Railcasters Required.—Two Brassfinishers and one good Lacqueress Wanted.— Apply to Horatio Myer and Co., Brass and Iron Bedstead Manufacturers, Surrey Iron Works, Vauxhall, London.' on 10 July 1890.26 He appeared on the census of 5 April 1891 at 5 Randolph Gardens, Maida Vale, London England, as Head, married, age 40, birthplace Hereford, Herefordshire and he was an Employer and 'Iron founder and London County Councillor'. He was living with his Wife Esther and Sons Charles, Horace, Humphrey and Leslie. Also in the household was a visiting German Governess and two Domestic Servants: Cook and Housemaid.27

He was referred to in 'The History of the Bayswater Synagogue 1863-1963', Chapter 1 'Bayswater Synagogue Begins' as follows:

'.. Nelson Samuel, was a Warden at the beginning of the century. With Nelson Samuel in the "box" were Horatio Myer, MP., and Joseph Moss. People referred to them as the "clock and ornaments": Nelson Samuel being of short, stocky build, and the other two tall and thin.28'

He lived between 1901 and 1915 at 64 Maida Vale, Maida Vale, London England; and he was sometimes listed as J.P.29,8,30 He appeared on the census of 31 March 1901 at 64 Maida Vale, Marylebone, London England, as Head, married, age 50, born Hereford, Herefordshire, and his occupation has been transcribed as 'Iron Founder Etc Etc.31,32' He was mentioned in the Jewish Chronicle as 'Horatio Myer, Liberal candidate at general election. (which he won until lost at election of 1910). Born Hereford 1850, attended Rev R. I. Cohen's school at Dover. Member of Bayswater Synagogue. Represented Kennington in 1st LCC. Manufactures metal bed-steads' on 12 January 1906.33 He was listed as Horatio Myer, one of the 'Contributors to the Sick Room Helps Society 1907-8' between 1907 and 1908 at 64 Maida Vale, Maida Vale, London England.34 He was recorded in Hansard for speeches in the House of Commons as a Member and for example its records read: 'First recorded, on May 6, 1909 Dover Harbour: (Mr. HORATIO MYER Is there any truth in the statement that owing to currents it is dangerous for men-of-war to enter the harbour at times?). By year, 8 in total: 1909. Last recorded, on September 23, 1909 Motor Vehicles (Speed Limit): (Mr. HORATIO MYER Is the hon. [S1476] Various, WWW Information sourced from the World Wide Web, http://www.encyclopedia.com/doc/1E1-naphtha.html 'naphtha , term usually restricted to a class of colorless, volatile, flammable liquid hydrocarbon mixtures. Obtained as one of the more volatile fractions in the fractional distillation of petroleum (when it is known as petroleum naphtha), in the fractional distillation of coal tar (coal-tar naphtha), and in a similar distillation of wood (wood naphtha), it is used widely as a solvent for various organic substances, such as fats and rubber, and in the making of varnish. Because of its dissolving property it is important as a cleaning fluid; it is also incorporated in certain laundry soaps. Coal-tar (aromatic) naphthas have greater solvent power than petroleum (aliphatic) naphthas. Originally the term naphtha designated a colorless flammable liquid obtained from the ground in Persia. Later it came to be applied to a number of other natural liquid substances having similar properties. Technically, gasoline and kerosene are considered naphthas.'.

'Location Information: The Loos Memorial forms the side and back of Dud Corner Cemetery, and commemorates over 20,000 officers and men who have no known grave, who fell in the area from the River Lys to the old southern boundary of the First Army, east and west of Grenay. Loos-en-Gohelle is a village 5 kilometres north-west of Lens, and Dud Corner Cemetery is located about 1 kilometre west of the village, to the north-east of the N43 the main Lens to Bethune road.

Historical Information: Dud Corner Cemetery stands almost on the site of a German strong point, the Lens Road Redoubt, captured by the 15th (Scottish) Division on the first day of the battle. The name "Dud Corner" is believed to be due to the large number of unexploded enemy shells found in the neighbourhood after the Armistice. On either side of the cemetery is a wall 15 feet high, to which are fixed tablets on which are carved the names of those commemorated. At the back are four small circular courts, open to the sky, in which the lines of tablets are continued, and between these courts are three semicircular walls or apses, two of which carry tablets, while on the centre apse is erected the Cross of Sacrifice.

No. of Identified Casualties: 20596'.

'Samuel Family of Liverpool and London'
Reginald Abraham Simmons Myer was born on 21 November 1879 at Hereford, Herefordshire England; and his birth was registered in the March quarter 1880 at Hereford Registration district.1,2,4,5 He was the son of Grenville David Myer and Rachel Matilda Simmons.1,3 Reginald Abraham Simmons Myer appeared on the census of 3 April 1881 at 10 Commercial Street, Hereford, Herefordshire England, as Son, age 1, birthplace St Peters, Hereford, Herefordshire.6 He was a 'Director, Horatio Myer & Co., Ltd., for many years. A Freeman of the City of London, Volunteer, Victoria & St George's Rifles, 1896-1901. Member (1907), Royal Society of Arts. First World War: 2nd Lieut., Royal Air Force. Member, London County Council, 1922-5, representing North Lambeth. Liberal candidate for Parliament, North Paddington, 1931. Past President, Kennington Liberal Association. Past Vice-President, Lambeth North Liberal Association. Past Vice-President, Eye Division of Suffolk Liberal Association. Manager of Schools and Chairman of After-Care Committee, Kennington and North Lambeth for many years. Publications: 'A Gross Calculator'; 'Chats on Old English Tobacco Jars', 1930'.

In his Introduction to 'Chats on Old English Tobacco Jars', Charles R Beard says 'To every reader of Mr Myer's book, to every enthusiast who is privileged to inspect his treasurers, some different aspect of his collection will appeal. To some the attraction will lie in its reflection of the manners and customs, the beliefs and the interests of the past; to others it will be the revelation of the evolution and development of a definite, though admittedly a very minor, school of decoration, complete with its motives, symbols and technique; while to a third section these tobacco jars will be a mirror in which, dimmed by time, they may see reflected the events of history, both great and small, the birth and death of political beliefs, and the ebb and flow of commercial enterprise. In the pages which follow there is interest and profitable amusement for all.'

In Reginald Myer's book, which he dedicated 'In Love and Affection to my Wife, The Hon. Elsie Myer', he described how, having 'been a collector of various things from my earliest youth onwards', his Tobacco Jar collection started. 'My wife and I had decided, some twenty years ago, that we wanted a country home, and as we had made up our minds that the most bracing air in England was to be found on the east coast, we decided to explore the possibilities in this direction. We did not want to try farther north than Wells, in Norfolk, and so agreed that we would start a walking tour at Wells and proceed down the coast until we came to the place which we liked best. We went through several charming and interesting places.... At one of these places in a little junk shop, I saw a couple of what looked to me rather interesting old boxes. Going into the shop I found that they really were rather attractive, and that the price was only a few shillings, so I bought one of them.7,8'

He appeared on the census of 5 April 1891 at 70 Carlton Hill, Marylebone, London England, as Son, age 11, birthplace Hereford, Herefordshire, and he was a Scholar.9 He appeared on the census of 31 March 1901 at 157 Sutherland Avenue, Maida Vale, London England, as Son, single, age 21, born Hereford, and he was 'Assistant Manager [to his] Father' who was a Bedstead Manufacturer.10 He married Hon Elsie Montagu, daughter of Sir Samuel Montagu Bt (1st Lord Swaythling) and Ellen Cohen, on 31 October 1905 at New West End Synagogue, St Petersburgh Place, Bayswater, London England; and their marriage was registered in the December quarter 1905 at Paddington Registration district. According to a full report in The Jewish Chronicle of 3 November 1905 the Bride 'wore an elegant gown of white satin, with grateful court train, trimmed with old Spanish lace..3,2,11,12'

Reginald Abraham Simmons Myer lived between 1906 and 1915 at 8 Ladbroke Square, Kensington, London England; as 'Myer Reginald.13,14' He was executor with others of his father's will on 7 January 1919.15 He lived between 1920 and 1952 at 50 Westbourne Terrace, Paddington, London England.16,17 He was A 'Reginald Myer' stood for election at Paddington North (UK Parliament constituency) for the 1929 General Election for the Liberal Party (see above)
in 1929.18,19 He and Hon Elsie Montagu recorded as First Class UK Incoming Passengers embarked on the Cavina of the shipping line Elders & Fyffes Ltd at Barbados and were listed as Retired and Housewife, with a proposed UK address of '30 Westbourne Tce, London, W8', previously residing in Barbados, arriving at Bristol, England, on 23 April 1953.20 Reginald Abraham Simmons Myer died on 11 April 1959 at age 79; and his death was registered in the June quarter 1959 at Paddington Registration district, at age 79.21,22,23 He was cremated at Golders Green, London England.22 He was the subject of an obituary in The Times with the title: 'Mr Reginald Myer, A Long Life of Wide Interests' it says he 'had been for 40 years an active director of a large family business of furniture manufacturers; he gave play throughout a long life to wide and various interests.

'He was a judge for figure skating for the National Skating Association; the author, in his youth, of a ready reckoner and in middle life of an authoritative and widely reviewed book on old English tobacco jars, extensively illustrated from his own collection; a Freeman of the city of London; and for some years a member of the London County Council. He was born in Hereford and during the First World War served in the Royal Flying Corps. He was a manger of the Victoria Boys Club and served on school committees in Vauxhall.

'His election to the LCC was confirmed only when, after three indecisive recounts, the returning officer resorted to the time honoured expedient of putting the names of the two candidates into a hat. While a member of the LCC he proposed the compulsory wrapping of bread, and the banning of horse-drawn vehicles on the London streets to speed traffic - reforms which he lived to see almost accomplished not by regulation but by circumstance. He stood for North Paddington as a Liberal in the general election of 1929, but was defeated by Brendan (afterwards Lord) Bracken, in spite of the support of his cousin Lord Samuel...'

on 16 April 1959.24 The Jewish Chronicle of 24 April 1959 carried his Obituary.25 His estate was probated on 10 July 1959; and it was reported in The Times that he left £54,345 gross.26
