      Leonard Frederick Lupton also went by the name of Len.5,6 He was born in 1892 at Clapton, London England; and his birth was registered in the June quarter 1892 at Hackney Registration district.1,2,7 He was the son of Charles Lupton and Annie Masters.3,4 Leonard Frederick Lupton appeared on the census of 31 March 1901 at 98 Hamlet Court Road, Prittlewell, Essex England, as Son, age 8, birthplace Clapton, London, with his siblings Ada, Charles and Bertram.7,1 He appeared on the census of 2 April 1911 at Rochford, Essex England, as Son, age18, birthplace London.8 He was photographed in his Army uniform during the Great War and for his service in the Army he would have been entitled to the award of both the Victory Medal and the War Medal. The National Archives contain the following Medal card for WWI Campaign Medals:

     'Lupton, Leonard F. Corps: Gloucestershire Regiment. Regiment No. 38908. Rank: Private'

between 1914 and 1918.9,10,11,12 He married Gertrude Hilda Judd, daughter of Arthur Judd and Ada Susannah Nokes, in 1915 at Essex England; and their marriage was registered at Rochford Registration district in the June quarter 1915.5,6,13 Leonard Frederick Lupton was working at a 'Corn Chandlers with Post Office in the shop', at Southend on Sea, Essex circa 1919.5,14 He and Gertrude Hilda Judd were photographed bathing at the seaside circa 1920 at Wittering on Sea, Sussex England.15 Leonard Frederick Lupton and Gertrude Hilda Judd were both workers in father/father-in-laws shop, Southend-on-Sea. They advertised in Kelly's Directory as 'Lupton Charles, corn & flour dealer, & post office, 212 London road (TN 553) & Park road.' Arthur Judd, Gertrude's father, was advised to move to the sea and he too worked in the shop between 1926 and 1933.6 Leonard Frederick Lupton died in June 1957 at Essex England; and his death was registered at Southend Registration district in the June quarter 1957, at age 65.16,17

     Robert Ruthven Tilt was born in 1863 at London England; and his birth was registered in the June quarter 1863 at Newington Registration district.2 He was the son of William Brown Tilt and Louisa Brooks.1 Robert Ruthven Tilt was christened on 12 June 1863 at Holy Trinity, Newington, Surrey England.1,3 He appeared on the census of 2 April 1871 at 2 Lessness Villas, Lessness Heath, Erith, Kent England, as Son, age 6, birthplace Newington, St Mary, Surrey, and he was a Scholar.4 He appeared on the census of 3 April 1881 at 45 Chantry Road, Lambeth, Surrey England, as Son, unmarried, age 17, birthplace Newington, Surrey, and he was an 'Assurance Clerk.5' He appeared on the census of 5 April 1891 at 12 Offerton Road, Clapham, London England, as Son, single, age 27, birthplace Newington, Surrey, and he was an Insurance Clerk.6 He appeared on the census of 31 March 1901 at 40 Baldry Gardens, Streatham, London England, as Son, single, age 37, birthplace London Newington; the Head of the Family was his widowed mother, Louisa, and Robert was an 'Agent Actuary.7'


Robert was appointed as Executor and Trustee of the Will Agnes Hillatt Jones and is described by her as 'my Cousin Robert Ruthven Tilt of 40 Baldry Gardens Streatham in the County of Surrey'. Agnes also appointed 'my cousin George Jones of Ashford in the County of Kent Bank Manager and my friend Miss Mary Ann Savory of Wendover in the County of Bucks.' on 16 December 1903.8


He married Jessie Nash in 1906 at London England; and their marriage was registered in the June quarter 1906 at St George Hanover Square.9,10 Robert Ruthven Tilt appeared on the census of 2 April 1911 at Epsom, Surrey England, as Head, married 1906, age 47, birthplace London and he was an Actuary.11 He was listed in The Post Office London Directory, 1914. [Part 8: Advertisements]' andThe Post Office London Directory, 1915. [Part 6: Postal, City, etc.]' under Actuaries, Secretaries and Managing Directors as:

     'Tilt Robert Ruthven, F.I.A. (actuary & secretary), General Reversionary.12,13'



He was on the death of his Cousin, Agnes Hillatt Jones, on 28 December 1928, granted Probate as one of her Exectors and Trustees as follows: 'R.R. Tilt, actuary and Nellie Macculloch...effects...£5,057.1s.4d' on 30 January 1929.8 He lived on 1 June 1929 at 9 Queens Road, Tunbridge Wells, Kent England.14 He became joint owner of The Jones Family Grave, with Nellie Mary Ann Waltham (Mrs. Macculloch) on 1 June 1929 after the death of his Cousin, Agnes Hillatt Jones.


at Highgate Cemetery, Swains Lane, Highgate, London England.15 He died on 15 December 1931 at 7 Wordsworth Road, Worthing, Sussex England; and his death was registered in the December quarter 1931 at East Preston Registration district.16,17 He left a will on 5 April 1932; and Probate was granted on 3 March 1932. The following notice appeared in The London Gazette Issue 33814 published on the 5 April 1932:

     'ROBERT RUTHVEN TILT, Deceased. Pursuant to the Trustee Act 1925. NOTICE is hereby given that all creditors and persons having any claims or demands against the estate of Robert Ruthven Tilt, late of 9, Queens Road, Tunbridge Wells, in the county of Kent, and 7, Wordsworth Road, Worthing, in the county of Sussex, and c/o Midland Bank Ltd., Pall Mall, in the county of London, deceased (who died on the 15th day of December, 1931, and whose Will was proved by Midland Bank Executor & Trustee Coy. Limited, of 28-32, Poultry, in the city of London, the executors therein named, on the 3rd day of March, 1932, in the Principal Registry of the Probate Division of the High Court of Justice), are hereby required to send in the particulars of their claims and demands to the said Midland Bank Executor & Trustee Coy. The beneficiaries of his Will dated 28 April 1931 with codicil of 11 December 1931, included his Wife Jessie, Brother Frederick Brooks Tilt, and Nieces Mary Lily Tilt, now Mrs Fehr, and Winifred Brooks Tilt. Gross value of estate £19,308. 9s. 5d.16,9,18

He was commemorated and 'Deeply regretted' in In Memoriam notices in The Times, the two years following his death between 15 December 1932 and 15 December 1933.19

     Robert Mcculloch was born on 17 November 1800; according to his monumental inscription on the family grave in Linlithgow Churchyard.2,3,4,1 He was the son of Robert Mcculloch and Agnes Bowie.2,1 Robert Mcculloch was a 'Writer in Airdrie and a Procurator of the Sheriff Court at the Middle Ward of Lanark'. His name was not listed in Register of Members of the Signet. ' The expression 'writer' is often used in its generic sense to indicate the legal profession and so does not always signify membership of the WS society'. 'A procurator is a solicitor who pleads cases in the sheriff court'. The date precedes the Scottish Law list circa 1820.5,6,7,1 He died on 28 December 1822 at age 22; in Scotland and 'appears to have died young.8,9' He was buried after 28 December 1822 at Saint Michael's Church, Linlithgow, West Lothian Scotland; Robert's monumental inscription on the family grave in St Michael's Linlithgow Churchyard reads as follows:

'325 (FS in front of 323) Robt McCulloch writer in Airdrie & a procurator of the sheriff court at the Middle Ward of Lanark b (17).11.1800 d (23).12.182 (9 or 2).2,10,11,12,13,9,1'
