Location Information: Ypres (now Ieper) is a town in the Province of West Flanders. The Memorial is situated at the eastern side of the town on the road to Menin (Menen) and Courtrai (Kortrijk). Each night at 8 pm the traffic is stopped at the Menin Gate while members of the local Fire Brigade sound the Last Post in the roadway under the Memorial's arches.
Historical Information: The Menin Gate is one of four memorials to the missing in Belgian Flanders which cover the area known as the Ypres Salient. Broadly speaking, the Salient stretched from Langemarck in the north to the northern edge in Ploegsteert Wood in the south, but it varied in area and shape throughout the war. The Salient was formed during the First Battle of Ypres in October and November 1914, when a small British Expeditionary Force succeeded in securing the town before the onset of winter, pushing the German forces back to the Passchendaele Ridge. The Second Battle of Ypres began in April 1915 when the Germans released poison gas into the Allied lines north of Ypres. This was the first time gas had been used by either side and the violence of the attack forced an Allied withdrawal and a shortening of the line of defence. There was little more significant activity on this front until 1917, when in the Third Battle of Ypres an offensive was mounted by Commonwealth forces to divert German attention from a weakened French front further south. The initial attempt in June to dislodge the Germans from the Messines Ridge was a complete success, but the main assault north-eastward, which began at the end of July, quickly became a dogged struggle against determined opposition and the rapidly deteriorating weather. The campaign finally came to a close in November with the capture of Passchendaele. The German offensive of March 1918 met with some initial success, but was eventually checked and repulsed in a combined effort by the Allies in September. The battles of the Ypres Salient claimed many lives on both sides and it quickly became clear that the commemoration of members of the Commonwealth forces with no known grave would have to be divided between several different sites. The site of the Menin Gate was chosen because of the hundreds of thousands of men who passed through it on their way to the battlefields. It commemorates those of all Commonwealth nations (except New Zealand) who died in the Salient, in the case of United Kingdom casualties before 16 August 1917. Those United Kingdom and New Zealand servicemen who died after that date are named on the memorial at Tyne Cot, a site which marks the furthest point reached by Commonwealth forces in Belgium until nearly the end of the war. Other New Zealand casualties are commemorated on memorials at Buttes New British Cemetery and Messines Ridge British Cemetery. The YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL now bears the names of more than 54,000 officers and men whose graves are not known. The memorial, designed by Sir Reginald Blomfield with sculpture by Sir William Reid-Dick, was unveiled by Lord Plumer in July 1927.

     Robert James Burnett was born in 1920 at Northumberland England; and his birth was recorded at Newcastle Upon Tyne Registration district in the December quarter 1920.^3,1 He was the son of William Burnett and Caroline Louise Beale.¹ Robert James Burnett died on 10 October 1944; when he was killed in action in WWII. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission provide the following casualty information:

'Private [or Cpl] ROBERT JAMES BURNETT. 6141725, 2nd Bn., Gloucestershire Regiment. who died age 23 on 10 October 1944.
Son of William and L. C. Burnett, of Chertsey, Surrey. Remembered with honour.' He was buried at Heverlee War Cemetery in Belgium.

'The British Expeditionary Force was involved in the later stages of the defence of Belgium following the German invasion in May 1940, and suffered many casualties in covering the withdrawal to Dunkirk. Commonwealth forces did not return until September 1944, but in the intervening years, many airmen were shot down or crashed in raids on strategic objectives in Belgium, or while returning from missions over Germany. The original burial ground at Heverlee was on the opposite side of the lane. It was used after the liberation for burials from the 101st British General Hospital, which was then housed in Heverlee Girl's School close by. In July 1946, the present cemetery was started and was used for burials brought in from a wide area round about. The cemetery now contains 977 Commonwealth burials of the Second World War, 37 of them unidentified. There are also 29 First World War burials...^2,4' A newspaper report was published on the kindness of a Belgium family in tending his grave and offering hospitality to his mother when the British Legion arranged for her to visit his grave.⁵ The United Kingdom Inventry of War Memorials lists a memorial to 'The Honoured Memory of the Men of Chertsey who Fell in the Great War also of those who gave their lives in the Second World War 1939-1945', but does not provide a list of the individual names on the memorial. Names of the WWII Chertsey Serviceman are listed 'on Plaques at the base of the plinth' at St Peter's United Free Church, Windsor Street, Chertsey, Surrey England.⁶

     James Walter Oakford was born on 1 May 1906 at Stonewall, Manitoba Canada.^1,2 He appeared on the census of 1906 at Selkirk, Manitoba Canada, as Grandson of Elisabeth Williams, age 2 months, birthplace Manitoba, Post Office Balmoral.³ He was the son of Arthur Oakford and Ethel Maude M Williams.¹ James Walter Oakford died in 1976 at Thunder Bay, Ontario Canada.¹

     William Arthur Oakford was born on 8 February 1908 at Stonewall, Manitoba Canada.^1,2 He was the son of Arthur Oakford and Ethel Maude M Williams.¹ William Arthur Oakford died on 5 September 1908 at Stonewall, Manitoba Canada, at age 0.^1,3

      Her married name was Mollison.¹ Alberta Elizabeth Oakford was born in 1910 at Stonewall, Manitoba Canada.¹ She was the daughter of Arthur Oakford and Ethel Maude M Williams.¹ Alberta Elizabeth Oakford married Thomas Mollison in 1937 at Geraldton, Ontario Canada.¹ Alberta Elizabeth Oakford died in 1999 at Stonewall, Manitoba Canada.¹

     Thomas Mollison was born in 1905 at Argyle, Manitoba Canada.¹ He married Alberta Elizabeth Oakford, daughter of Arthur Oakford and Ethel Maude M Williams, in 1937 at Geraldton, Ontario Canada.¹ Thomas Mollison died in 1981 at Stonewall, Manitoba Canada.¹

The household also contained his wife Harriet and his children Mark, Ann, George, Stephen, Selina and Jessie.⁴ He died in 1872; and his death was registered in the June quarter 1872 at Ryde, Isle of Wight Registration district, at age 52.^5,6
