Cemetery: BROWN'S ROAD MILITARY CEMETERY, FESTUBERT Country: France Locality: Pas de Calais Location Information: Festubert is a village 8 kilometres east-north-east of Bethune. From the church in Festubert, take the D166 signposted Cuinchy. After 300 metres turn right. Brown's Road Military Cemetery will be found a further 300 metres along this road on the right hand side. Historical Information: Festubert was occupied by Commonwealth forces in October 1914 and on 23-24 November, the Indian Corps repulsed a German attack. The Battle of Festubert (15-25 May 1915) resulted in a short advance which left the village somewhat less exposed than it had been. Except for an advance which was attempted just to the south of Festubert (the Second Action of Givenchy, 15-16 June 1915), this sector remained quiet until 9 April 1918 and the beginning of the Battle of the Lys. Festubert was held by the 55th (West Lancashire) Division against the German assault, and successive attacks lasting through the month were repelled by the 1st and other Divisions. It remained an outpost for Commonwealth forces until the final advance began in September 1918. The cemetery was begun in October 1914, and carried on by fighting units and field ambulances until November 1917, when it contained 299 graves. It was greatly enlarged after the Armistice when graves were brought in from small cemeteries and isolated sites on the surrounding battlefields. The more sizeable of the graveyards concentrated here were:- CHEYNE WALK CEMETERY, GIVENCHY, on the road from Givenchy to Cuinchy, named from a trench. It was part of a cafe and garden, and it contained the graves of 13 soldiers from the United Kingdom who fell in October and December, 1914. LE PLANTIN SOUTH CEMETERY, GIVENCHY, on the road leading South from the hamlet of Le Plantin to Windy Corner. It contained the graves of 33 soldiers from the United Kingdom, and it was used from October, 1914 to December, 1916. LE PLANTIN CEMETERY (WELSH CHAPEL), FESTUBERT, on the South-West side of the road at Le Plantin North. It contained the graves of 43 soldiers from the United Kingdom (largely O.B.L.I. and 2nd Black Watch) and four from Canada, and it was used from December, 1914 to December, 1915. Brown's Road Cemetery now contains 1,071 burials and commemorations of the First World War. 407 of the burials are unidentified but special memorials commemorate three casualties believed to be buried among them. The cemetery was designed by Charles Holden.

     Walter Daborn was christened on 9 September 1849 at Saint Nicholas, Tooting, Surrey England; and his birth was recorded at Wandsworth record office in the September quarter 1849.^1,2,3 He was the son of George Daborn and Mary Coleman.¹ Walter Daborn appeared on the census of 30 March 1851 at Tooting, Surrey England, as Grandson, age 1, birthplace Tooting, Surrey.¹ He appeared on the census of 3 April 1881 at Earlswood Asylum For Idiots, Earlswood, Redhill, Surrey England, as Patient, age 30.⁴ He appeared on the census of 5 April 1891 at District Earlswood Asylum, Reigate, Surrey England, as age 38.⁵ He died in 1892; and his death was recorded at Reigate record office in the December quarter 1892.⁶

      Her married name was Daborn.^1,2 Mary Greenfield was born circa 1849 at Brandon, Norfolk England.¹ She married Sydney Samuel Daborn, son of George Daborn and Mary Coleman, in 1873; and their marriage was recorded at Wandsworth record office in the December quarter 1873.^1,2 Mary Greenfield appeared on the census of 3 April 1881 at Lunatic Asylum, Peckham Road, Camberwell, London England, as Attendant, age 32, birthplace Brandon, Norfolk.¹

      Her married name was Robinson. Ada Rachel Daborn was christened on 11 September 1853 at Saint Nicholas, Tooting, Wandsworth, Surrey England; and her birth was recorded at Wandsworth record office in the March quarter 1854.^1,3,4 She was the daughter of George Daborn and Mary Coleman.^1,2 Ada Rachel Daborn appeared on the census of 2 April 1861 at Tooting, Surrey England, as Daughter, age 8, birthplace Tooting, Surrey.¹

She emigrated in 1873; Ada Daborn was listed on The Zealandia as a Single Woman, age 22, from Surrey, with no occupation listed. 'Ship: 1116 tons Captain: Curry Surgeon Superintendent:. Sailed London August 20th 1873 - arrived Otago November 29th 1873. The Zealandia, a fine iron clipper-built ship of 1116 tons, was built for the Shaw, Savill Co, in 1869 and made her maiden voyage to Lytteton. The Zealandia was a beautiful ship, specially designed for carrying passengers. Her saloon was spacious and lofty and the cabins were unusually large and well ventilated, having extra large portholes to them. The decoration of the saloon was extremely chaste. She had some special cabins for families, and a ladies saloon. The second cabin was on deck and the berths were larger then usual and well lighted. The Zealandia, after completing 31 voyages to New Zealand, was sold to the Russians. She was stranded in 1911, and sold to a firm in Nova Scotia.⁵'

She married H A Robinson on 16 June 1874 at New Zealand; and their marriage was reported in the Tuapeka Times, Volume VII, Issue 365, 17 June 1874, Page 2 as follows:-
