FatherEphraim Levy Green4 b. 1759, d. c 5 Oct 1821
Levy Ephraim Green was also known as Levi Ephraim Green-halevi.5 He was born in 1784 at Amsterdam, Netherlands.6 He was the son of Ephraim Levy Green.4 Levy Ephraim Green was 'one of a family who, in their youth, had come to England from Amsterdam - on, it is said, a Dutch herring boat.* Levy Green settled in the East End of London and under the name of L. Green & Co. traded at 33 Middlesex Street [known as Petticoat Lane] as a matza-baker, cheese factor and grocer; the Green matza factory in Middlesex Street was later to become a well-known institution in the East End'

'In the matza factory Levy Green installed a machine that he has invented for kneading dough; but as late as 1874, when the business was under the management of his eldest son, who has taken over after his father's death, all other processes in matza-making were performed by hand, as the Chief Rabbi refused to sanction the use in England of various mechanical devices to be found on the Continent, for fear, it was suggested of causing unemployment†'

He is described on the Dutch Jewish Genealogical Data Base as 'piece-goods broker, dealer in trimmings, Passover bread baker, wholesale clothier'‡

He was listed in 'The Post Office Directory' of 1849 as 'clothier' of 21 Middlesex Street, London, E** circa 1800.7,8,9,10 He married Amelia Hyams, daughter of Aaron Hyams and Lydia (?), on 9 July 1805 at The Great Synagogue, Dukes Place, City of London England.6,11 Levy Ephraim Green died on 18 October 1858 at 21 Middlesex Street, London England; and his death was announced in 'The Jewish Chronicle' on 22 October 1858.6,12

Abraham Isaac Emanuel1,2

M, #9822, b. circa 1873, d. 7 May 1907
Abraham Isaac Emanuel was also known as Abe Emanuel.3,4 He was born circa 1873; and he was the son of M Emanuel.1 He was employed by Messrs Arthur Briscoe and Company, who described themselves as 'Manufacturers' but who also sold other wares such as those in for example an advertisement published in the New Zealand Tablet of 29 November 1900: 'Marseilles red roofing tiles are getting to be much appreciated in this Colony, having already obtained a strong hold on public favor in Australia. They have many qualities to recommend them. They are perfectly watertight, cool, picturesque, and inexpensive. Messrs Arthur Briscoe and Co., of Dunedin, with branches in the principal centres of the Colony, are the local agents, and they have just landed a shipment direct from Marseilles' at Dunedin, Otago New Zealand.5,6 He and Bertha Mendelsohn were engaged on 10 August 1899; as announced in the Otago Witness: 'The engagement has been announced of Miss Bertha Mendelsohn, daughter of Mr L. Mendelsohn. J.P., of this city, to Mr Abe Emanuel, representative of Messrs Arthur Briscoe and Co., Dunedin.7' Abraham Isaac Emanuel married Bertha Mendelsohn, daughter of Louis Mendelsohn and Leah Jones Levason, on 7 March 1900 at Otago New Zealand; and the following announcement was published in the Otago Witness of 15 March 1900: 'EMANUEL— MENDELSOHN.— On the 7th March, at the Synagogue, by the 'Rev. A. T. Chodowski, Abraham J. Emanuel, eldest son of M. Emanuel, Sydney, to Bertha Mendelsohn, second daughter of Louis Mendelsohn, Dunedin'.

Also in the same edition of the newspaper there was a full report on the wedding as follows:

'A JEWISH WEDDING.
For the first time for some years past a marriage was solemnised in the Dunedin Synagogue on the 8th, and the ceremony excited a good deal of interest and attracted an unusual amount of attention, particularly from the fair sex. Before the hour when the Synagogue was opened people began to assemble in its vicinity in such numbers as to make it very difficult for anyone to reach the entrance, and soon after 2 o'clock the edifice was full of people who had been able to present tickets of admission, so that very few of those who had not been invited were able to witness the ceremony. It is not unusual for Jewish marriages to prove very attractive to others than the co-religionists of the contracting parties, and the ceremony is very beautiful and impressively solemn; some of the prayers and the addresses are given in English, as well as in Hebrew, while, of course, the choral service has a common language for all who are musical. There is the fact, too, that the opportunities of witnessing the solemnisation of marriage according to the ritual and with the ceremonies immemorial among " the chosen people," are not of frequent occurrence in this colony. A little curiosity, therefore, was quite natural, and as it was accompanied by the best of good wishes, could not be regarded as in any way objectionable. The conduct of the people outside as well as inside the sacred edifice was quite in keeping with the occasion.

'The contracting parties are well-known and respected members of the Jewish community —namely, Mr Abraham Emanuel, who is engaged in commercial pursuits, and Miss Bertha Mendelsohn, the daughter of Mr Louis Mendelsohn, whose residence in Dunedin dates back for a period of 32 years. The ceremony was one that is not easily described. As already mentioned, the body and galleries of the synagogue were filled with friends and respectful and interested spectators, and taste rather than profusion had been exercised in the floral decorations, which were, however, sufficient and remarkably good. The Rabbi, the Rev. A. T. Catawissa, was waiting in his official vestments; the choir, largely composed of excellent lady vocalists, having Miss Joel as organist and Mr Reverts as conductor, was in readiness in the gallery, and punctually at" half-past 2 o'clock the bridegroom, Mr Emanuel, entered the synagogue, accompanied by Mr and Mrs P. Selig, and his brothers, Messrs Louis and Henry Emanuel, as best men. The afternoon service was then read by the Rev. Mr Chodowski, and at its close he called upon the bridegroom, who thereupon signed the marriage agreement in the presence of witnesses, the witnesses being the minister of the congregation, Mr H. Hyman (its president), and Mr D. E. Theomin (its vice-president). Shortly afterwards, the Rabbi took his place before the canopy — a great square of the richest blue velvet, trimmed with white, and supported at each corner by massive poles, held by boys. A voluntary pealed from the organ, and then the bride, Miss Mendelsohn, accompanied hy her father, who gave her away, and bridesmaids, entered the synagogue and took up their stations under the canopy. The bride was charmingly robed in a dress of white duchesse satin, handsomely trimmed with real lace, chiffon, and sprays of orange blossom. She wore the customary wreath and veil, and carried a handsome shower bouquet, tied with hand-painted white silk ribbon, the gift of the bridegroom. She was attended by five bridesmaids — Miss A. Mendelsohn (her sister), who was attired in a white embroidered muslin, profusely trimmed with Valenciennes lace, and wore a large picture hat and carried a shower bouquet; the Misses Leah and Beryl Selig (her nieces) and the Misses Hanchen and Bertha Chodowski (daughters of the Rabbi) who were all similarly dressed in white embroidered muslin frocks and large white chiffon hats trimmed with satin baby ribbon, each carrying a wicker basket filled with white sweet peas and maiden hair ferns. The bridesmaids wore brooches of gold pins and stars, bearing the initials of the bride and groom, the gift of the latter. As soon as the bride stood under the canopy, the bridegroom, attended by Mr and Mrs P. Selig, who acted as his sponsors (Mrs Selig wearing a handsome dress of two shades of petunia bengaline, trimmed with silk and velvet to match, with velvet torque to suit) was led to the canopy, entering from the other side and standing to the front and right of the minister and to the left of the bride. The Rabbi commenced by intoning a prayer in the Hebrew tongue, and the next portion of the marriage service was the presentation of a small goblet of wine to the bride—a ceremony that was subsequently repeated. The bride having sipped of the wine presented the goblet to the bridegroom, who did likewise. The ring, that indispensable symbol, common to so many ceremonies for the union of true hearts, was then placed up the bride's finger by the bridegroom, and the Rabbi, addressing her, said: ''It is my duty, to inform you that having accepted that ring from Mr Emanuel you are now his wife according to the Law of Moses and of Israel". The marriage agreement was then read in Hebrew and in English, and the Rabbi addressed first the bride, then the bridegroom, and then both jointly, speaking of mutual duty, confidence and love, of their responsibility to God, and of the claims of religion. The address was impressively delivered, and was eloquent and appropriate, and concluded with prayer and benediction in English and Hebrew. After this the Rabbi took the goblet of wine in his hand, said a prayer over it, and presented it to the bride and bridegroom who sipped it again for the second lime. The glass was then placed on the floor and crushed beneath the bridegroom's foot, and this concluded the ceremony. Many reasons have been assigned for the custom of breaking a glass, which is inseperable from a Jewish; but the real reason for it, we are informed, is that it is emblematical of the frailly of life and happiness. The bride and groom left the Synagogue amidst hearty congratulations and good wishes for their happiness. A reception was held subsequently at the Choral Hall, which was beautifully decorated, and where the numerous guests were bountifully entertained. The wedding presents were very numerous and valuable, fully £400 worth of presents being received. At the reception the toast of the bride and bridegroom was proposed by the Rev. Mr Chodowski, and a suitable response was made by Mr Emanuel. Other toasts proposed were the health of the Rev. Mr Chodowski and of Mr Mendelsohn. Vocal items were contributed by Miss Lichtenstein, the Misses Marks, and Miss Lang, and Mrs Montague played the "Wedding March". The bride and bridegroom left for their honeymoon amidst good wishes and a perfect deluge of rice.

'The travelling dress of the bride was made of brown bengaline trimmed with pink silk and brown velvet, with toque to match.1,8'

Abraham Isaac Emanuel died on 7 May 1907 at Hinemoa, Forbury Road, Dunedin, Otago New Zealand; and his death was announced the next day in the Otago Witness which described him as 'the second son of M Emanuel, Redfern, Sydney, and beloved husband of Bertha Mendelsohn, age 34 years'. The Grey River Argus of 8 May 1907 reported his death under the heading 'Sudden Death' as 'a well-known commercial traveller of the firm of Mendelsohn and Son, died suddently to-day after a short illness'; as did the Evening Post and the Wanganui Herald on the day he died.9,10,11,12,13 He was buried on 8 May 1907 at Southern Cemetery, Dunedin, Otago New Zealand.14 His estate was probated; and the files from Wellington High Court are held at The Archives New Zealand, Head Office, Wellington. He left a Will where his occupation was described as Commercial Traveller.2,15
