His correct occupation was 'Merchant and Warden of Lambton County as well as Post master and banker.8,9'

He died on 25 March 1912 at Sarnia, Ontario Canada, at age 85.10 He was buried after 25 March 1912 at Pine Hill Cemetery, Bosanquet, Ontario Canada.6 He was The following is from a biographical sketch written by Victor Lauriston:

'Robert Rae, early Bosanquet figure, was a power in politics. A man who loomed large in the municipal history of Lambton was the Bosanquet pioneer Robert Rae. Something like 43 years elapsed between his first election to the Township Council and his final service as county commissioner. He served six terms as warden of Lambton, an all time record for the county, and a quarter century lay between his first and last election to that office.

Rae was born in Lesmahagow, a Lanarkshire village, on November 16, 1826, the son of Robert and Agnes (Hamilton) Rae, and the second of their four
children. When five years old and four months old, he emigrated with his parents to Canada. After a tedious seven weeks' voyage, during which the sailing ship "Nailor" ran the gauntlet of severe storms and lay four days in a vast ice field, they reached Quebec.

They continued by the steamer "Chambly" to Montreal, thence by Durham boat up the St. Lawrence to Prescott; thence on the steamer "William the Fourth" to
York--the trip from Quebec to what is now Toronto consuming three weeks. After a brief sojourn with a hospitable friend, Mrs. Alexander Gibb, the family went on to visit an uncle, Robert Hamilton, in Scarborough Township.

Hamilton was engaged in clearing a fallow, and the elder Robert Rae volunteered to assist. The first large tree he undertook to cut fell in the wrong direction, and the heavy trunk crushed him to death. This was on June 28, 1832, just four weeks after his landing in Toronto.

For a few months, the widow and four small children made their home in a cabin on the Hamilton farm. That fall, they rented 15 acres on the Kingston road. In
eight years there they saved enough money to purchase a 30- acre property near the present site of Malvern. All this meant hard work for the younger Robert Rae, work which cut him off from all opportunity of securing an education.

At 16, the boy was unable to write his name, and had no knowledge of arithmetic or grammar; but at the age of seven, he had completely mastered the
Shorter Catechism, and by attending Sabbath School and Bible Class, he became well grounded in scriptural subjects.

In 1840 when Robert was 14, the family had moved to a 30-acre bush farm east of the Markham road, where his hard work helped to make it highly productive. From 16 to 19, he was able to attend for six weeks each winter, and so rapid was his progress, he commences the study of the classics with a view to entering a profession. Here, too, he made good headway; but at the end of a year the ambition veered toward mercantile pursuits, though it was several years before he had a chance to gratify them.

At 24, he became a clerk in the Strachan & Redford grocery in Toronto. The following spring he opened a small store on the Markham road.

Meanwhile the mother had sold the 30-acre farm and the family had bought 200 acres in Bosanquet, then largely a wilderness. The young storekeeper sold
his business and in January, 1852, after a five days' journey by team, the family reached their location on Lot 23, Con. 9, Bosanquet, where in the course of the winter, they erected a log shanty. Robert and his brother, Archibald, spent two years clearing the farm. Later they sold this and bought land near the thriving Village of Pine Hill. The village, about that time, was rechristened Widder, in honor of Frederick Widder, head of the Canada Company.

In 1854, Rae, in partnership with James Harrower, opened the second general store at Widder. The following year he married Rachel Jane Smith, of Warwick.
Later he sold his interest in the partnership to Murdo McLeay, of Warwick, and opened a general store in his own account.

In 1856, Rae was elected to the Bosanquet Township Council, an office he held four years. In 1860, he was elected reeved, a position he continued to hold--
except for one year--up to 1887. In 1863, he was unanimously elected warden of Lambton, and re-elected for 1864 and 1867.

When , on March 6, 1867, a Liberal convention was called in Sarnia to nominate a candidate for the new Dominion Parliament, an informal ballot was taken on
possible candidates for the Legislature. T.B. Pardee received 32 votes, with 22 for Rae and 12 for Fred Davis. The same evening, however, a representative
gathering of the Reform Party at the Belchamber Hotel tendered the provincial to Robert Rae. Rae hesitated, as he had been supporting Colonel Davis. The meeting thereupon, refusing to delay the matter, nominated Pardee. Rae decided to contest the election as an independent. A little later, he accepted a nomination tendered him at a Conservative convention at Wyoming. He had previously been a strong Reformer, and the acceptance of the Conservative nomination place him in an quivocal position. Feeling in both parties was strong against men who changed their political affiliation. As a result, Rae failed to secure strong support from either party, and T.B. Pardee went on to a distinguished career in provincial politics. This fiasco, however, did not shake Lambton's confidence in Rae as a municipal leader. Bosanquet continued to elect him reeve and Lambton County Council re-elected him warden for 1868 and 1869. Rae, meanwhile, had transferred his business interests from Widder Village to Widder Station, on the Grand Trunk. Widder Station later became the Village of Thedford. In 1876, Rae left Thedford to open partnership with Alfred Lofft, of St. Marys. That year was the one break in his service as reeve. In 1877, while he was still living in Forest, Bosanquet unanimously elected him reeve, and he returned to Thedford later the same year. He continued to serve till 1887, when he was elected warden of Lambton for the sixth time. He then retired from the post he had held so long. In 1892, however, he went back to the County Council as reeve of Thedford, and in 1897, when the County Councils Act established a new system of county commissioners, the veteran was elected to represent District 6 for a two-year term. Owing to ill health, he did not offer for re-election in 1900.

These were not all his municipal interests. For many years he was school trustee of S.S. 11, Bosanquet, and secretary-treasurer. Only July 17, 1856,
he was appointed postmaster at Widder, and following his removal to Widder Station ( later Thedford), he was named postmaster there in 1862. Prior to
Confederation, the Macdonald Government named him a justice of the peace, and in his time he was one of the oldest magistrates in Ontario. In his later
years, following his retirement from the County Council, he was a member of the Thedford Public Library Board.

Mr. and Mrs. Rae lived to celebrate their golden wedding on July 30, 1905. The great occasion was marred only by the fact that their seven children had
made new homes in the West, and were unable to attend. In their time the couple had seen amazing changes in Bosanquet, in Lambton County, and in
Canada....11'
