He married a local girl, Agnes Hamilton (born Jun 28 1873), on June 8 1896. Agnes was the daughter of the manager of the local gas works, and had attended school with John, although one year behind. John left his family in Kilsyth and went to Canada to investigate prospects there - my older sister believes that may have been just prior to WW1. Family legend holds that he returned saying Canada was too cold (might have been winter, perhaps?). In July 1920 John and Agnes left Kilsyth with their children bound for Australia. I remember one time when my grandmother was having great difficulty cleaning a saucepan that had been slightly burnt; I suggested that she should use some steel wool. She said she would like to get some but grandfather said it would wear the saucepans out and would not permit it. I spoke to grandfather once about working in Scotland. His barber's shop was in Kilsyth, a village about 12 miles east of Glasgow. Many of the men in the town worked in coalmines in Kirkintilloch. This was a couple of miles from Kilsyth over the hills and the men walked there and back each day. They used to come to him on a Saturday morning for a shave. Shaves cost one penny and haircuts were three pence. Unfortunately they never washed before coming and their beards were full of coal dust and used to blunt and gap the old cutthroat razors...⁷' He died in 1958 at Ascot Vale, Victoria Australia; and his death was recorded in Victoria.^6,12

He was living with his Wife Ellen. General Servant Ellen Round completed the household.⁶ He appeared on the census of 31 March 1901 at 1 Edward Street, St Pancras, London England, as Head, widowed, age 81, birthplace Marylebone, London, and he was living on his own means. Albert Pollard lived on 18 June 1894 at Fleur-de-Lis Delft Street, Sandwich, Kent England; 'The Fleur is ideally located in the heart of the ancient Cinque Port of Sandwich. It comprises a 11 room hotel, a spacious high-quality restaurant incorporating the town's old Corn Exchange, and an atmospheric bar.' 20/3/03.¹² He was a Licensed Victualler on 20 July 1894.¹ He appeared on the census of 31 March 1901 at Castle Inn, Folkestone, Kent England, as Head, age 40, married, birthplace 'Sandwick', Kent, and he was a Publican. He was living with his Wife Nellie and Sons Albert and Harold. Also in the household was a General Domestic Servant.¹³ He was listed in 'Kelly's Directory of Kent, 1903. [Part 1: County & Localities] [Part 2: Private Resident & Trade Directories] ' as follows:

     'Castle inn, Albert Pollard, 77 Foord road, Folkestone' circa 1903.¹⁴ He died in 1903 at Kent England; and he was given as age 42 when his death was registered in the June quarter 1903 at Elham.¹⁵

      Ellen Lucy Edith Roud also went by the name of Nellie.¹ She was born in 1872 at Paddington, London England; and her birth was recorded at Kensington Registration district in the March quarter 1972.^1,4,2 She was the Daughter of Alfred and Ellen Roud.⁵ She appeared on the census of 3 April 1881 at Westminster, London England, as Daughter, age 4, birthplace Paddington.⁵ She appeared on the census of 5 April 1891 at 46 St James Street, Brighton, Sussex England, as Niece [of Albert Pollard], age 19, birthplace Paddington, London.⁶

Ellen Lucy Edith Roud appeared on the census of 31 March 1901 at Castle Inn, Folkestone, Kent England, as Nellie/Kellie Pollard, Wife, age 29, birthplace Paddington.⁹ As of 1908, her married name was Stock.^10,11 She married Egbert Sydney James Stock in 1908; and their marriage was registered in the September quarter 1908 at Hereford Registration district.^10,11 Ellen Lucy Edith Roud died in 1955 at Shoreham-by-Sea, Sussex England; and her death was recorded at Worthing Registration district in the September quarter 1955.¹²

      Her married name was Roake. Elizabeth Bowell was born circa 1640. She married Richard Roake on 3 November 1668 at Send, Surrey England; and Richard is believed to have been a Widower as the Parish Registers of Horsell give a person of his name as being the father of several children.¹

     Maurice Crockford was christened on 13 December 1678 at Pyrford, Surrey England.¹ He was the son of Maurice Crockford and Sarah Taylor.¹ Maurice Crockford married Ann Scotcher, daughter of John Scotcher and Alles Marten, on 18 September 1700 at Pyrford, Surrey England.^2,3,4

      Mary Netley was also known as Netly.³ Her married name was Roake.⁴ She was born circa 1665 at Horsell, Surrey England.⁴ She married Richard Roake, son of Richard Roake, on 4 September 1690 at Chertsey, Surrey England.^4,5,3

     Henry Roake was christened on 15 April 1701 at Horsell, Surrey England.^1,2 He was the son of Richard Roake and Mary Netley.^1,2 Henry Roake married Mary (?) circa 1728.³ Henry Roake died on 5 April 1758 at Horsell, Surrey England, at age 56.⁴ He was buried after 5 April 1758 at Horsell Church, Horsell, Surrey England; and his monumental inscription reads:

'Under this marble lies the body of Henry Roake who died much lamented on 5th April 1758 being age 58, dear father to his family sincere to his friends and true to all.⁴'

He left a will on 17 April 1758; and a transcript reads:

'Henry Roake of Kettlewell, Horsell, gentleman 2 Dec 1756 to my wife £60 p.a. for life charged on land (50 acres) in my manor of Windlesham in the occupation
of John Finch and all my messuage in Guildford in the occupation of Richard Loveland, tailor, and my part share in rectory of Horsell and tithes thereof, paying £20 p.a. part of above £60; all my copyhold messuage in Chertsey held of manor of Chertsey Beomond charged also; to my daughters [? Margaret Roake Mary Roake] Margaret, Mary and Ann my messuage etc. which I bought from Henry Wapshot and others and messuage I bought from Henry Collyer all in Horsell in my occupation (90 acres) being discharged from paying £1000 to William Risbridger by mortgage; my wife to be guardian to my daughter Ann Roake; wife to have Ann's portion in her minority; above land subject above legacies to my eldest son Richard Roake paying £300 to William Risbridger; all my copyhold land to my youngest son John Roake; to my wife all my plate, linen and furniture in two best rooms; residue to my son Richard Roake, exec.
