Reading Borough Libraries provide the following article under the title 'Reading's Great People':
"Morley, Professor Edith Julia (1875-1964) OBE, literary scholar and suffragette
Born in London, she studied in King’s College, London, later becoming a teacher there. In 1902 she also accepted a post as an assistant lecturer in English Literature and Language at Reading College, later becoming a full lecturer. In 1907 the college was about to gain university status and awarded professorships to all heads of department, except her. Refusing to accept such blatant discrimination against women, she tendered her resignation, which was refused. She continued to agitate and eventually in October 1908 she was awarded her professorship. She was the first woman professor at any British university. The university resented her success, and undermined her by awarding her a chair in English language, when literature was her main discipline; she was also denied a male assistant, as it was said no male academic could be expected to work under a woman. The University was later to recognise her teaching skills and commitment to her students.
She was an enthusiastic suffragette in the Reading branch of the Women's Social and Political Union. Her position meant she took a prominent place in mass marches and meetings and even had her goods seized and sold because of her refusal to pay taxes. She was also an enthusiastic Fabian socialist, and involved in local politics as a founder of the local Townswomen’s Guild and as a local magistrate. During the Second World War she set up the Reading Refugee Committee and fought passionately for better treatment for refugees; for this work she gained an OBE in 1950. She died and was buried in Reading in 1964.10,3,11,12'

He emigrated in 1885; from England to Canada via Ellis Island, United States of America. He 'then journeyed to Montreal, Quebec, then to Portage La Prarie, Manitoba'. His grandson Gordon Manville says 'I knew him better than any one as I lived with him as a teenager and listened to all his stories.4,13' He married Rachel Merritt, daughter of William Henry Merritt and Maria Robertson, on 30 April 1892 at Anoka, Minnesota, United States of America; and Gordon Manville says 'while living in Portage La Prairie he [Herbert Alix] journeyed to his wife's sisters place to be married. He never lived there.4,13' Herbert Alix Mosely appeared on the census of 1901 at Macdonald, Manitoba Canada, as Head, born 16 September 1868 in England, Church of England and he was a 'Clok Merchant' [Cloth Merchant?].14,15,16 He was listed in 'Lovell's Directory of Manitoba and Northwest Territories for 1900-1901: Province of Manitoba Directory. Including A Complete Classified Business Directory and Farmers Directory of Manitoba, John Lovell & Son, Winnipeg, MB, 1900' under Men's Furnishings in Carberry, Marquette, Manitoba.17 He appeared on the census of 1906 at Portage la Praire, Manitoba Canada, taken in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta as birthyear about 1868 and birthplace England.18 He was one of those featured in 'A History of Manitoba, Its Resources and People' and George Bryce provides the following biography:
'Herbert A Manville
One of the progressive merchants of Carberry, Manitoba, is Mr. Herbert A Manville, the subject of this sketch. He is a native of London, England, born 1868, and is a son of the late Benjamin Manville, also a native of the mother country.
Mr Manville was educated in Gower Street University School, and after putting aside his text books went into the wholesale cloth and woollen business in London, following this occupation for two years. He then entered into a three years' contract with the Hudson's Bay Company and came to Winnipeg in 1883, and on arrival in Manitoba worked for a time in Winnipeg and subsequently at Manitou, Morden and West Lynn. After the completion of this first contract he made another with the Hudson's Bay Company, and for twelve years was one of their most valued employees. In October, 1895, he located a Carberry, and bought out the present business, which is comprised of clothing, boots and shoes, gents' furnishings and hats.
In 1892 Mr Manville married Miss Rachel Merrett, a native of Ontario. They are the parents of four children: Fred, Edward, Arthur and Charles, the last two being twins.
Mr Manville has always taken a deep interest in fraternal circles, being affiliated with the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, the Independent Order of Foresters, the Maccabees and the Ancient Order of United Workmen. Ever since going to Carberry he has been prominently identified with political affairs, giving his support to the Conservative party. For five years he served as a councillor of Carberry and for one year was mayor of the city. In matters pertaining to the upbuilding of the city he also gives his earnest support, and for one year has served a president of the Board of Trade of Carberry.19' He appeared on the census of 1911 at 12 St E, Prince Albert, Saskatchewan Canada, as Head, married, age 42, born September 1869, birthplace England, and he was a Store keeper.20 He was a Grocer listed in 'Henderson's Prince Albert Alphabetical Directory for 1913' at Saskatchewan Canada.21 He lived on 4 October 1928 at Blackie, Alberta Canada.22 He celebrated his 99th birthday. 'The Calgary Herald' of that day included the following article:
'Man Recalls 1880s Meeting with Sir John a Macdonald
A Calgarian who remembers talking to Sir John a Macdonald celebrates his 99th birthday here today.
Herbert Manville, a long-time hardware merchant at Blackie who now is retired, met Canada's first prime minister when Sir John was on a railway inspection tour in Manitoba during the 1880s.
Bothered a bit now by deafness and poor eyesight, Mr Manville still recalls the incident which occurred soon after he came from England as an apprentice to the Hudson's Bay Company. Upon his arrival, he was posted to a company store at Manitou, Man., 100 miles southwest of modern-day Winnipeg.
At that time, it was the western terminus of the Canadian Pacific Railway.
One day Sir John, Manitoba's lieutenant-governor James Aikens and Premier Robert Davis came to inspect the line, which was then being extended toward the Pacific coast.
The 17-year-old English-born apprentice was introduced to the Canadian leader during the visit.
"How do you think you will like Canada, young Man?" the prime minister asked.
"Very much sir; there's no question about it,: was the reply. "You look very much like Lord Beaconsfield" he added as an afterthought.
The remark was something of a compliment, for Lord Beaconsfield was otherwise known as Benjamin Disraeli, Britain's prime minister during the empire-building reign of Queen Victoria.
HARDWARE CAREER
Mr Manville spent one more year at Manitou, and then was moved to Portage la Prairie. Soon afterward he began a hardware merchandising career that took him across the three Prairie provinces.
Five years ago he retired after spending 40 years in business at Blackie, 35 miles south of Calgary.
Two of his four sons are still living, one of them in Calgary. Fred lives in North Carolina and Charles is at 78 Fyffe Rd. SE.'
on 16 September 1967.23 He died on 31 May 1968 at Calgary, Alberta Canada, at age 99.4 He was buried on 30 June 1968 at Highwood Cemetery, High River, Alberta Canada.24,25,26
