     George Alfred Cohen was born in 1874 at London England; and his birth was registered in the December quarter 1874 at Poplar Registration district.^3,4,5 He was the son of Alfred Louis Cohen and Louise Marie Sophie Javal.³ George Alfred Cohen appeared on the census of 3 April 1881 at 106 Westbourne Terrace, Paddington, London England, as Son, age 7, birthplace London, Middlesex.⁶ He was listed in The Post Office London Directory, [Part 4: Trades & Professional Directory] in the Brokers Stock and Share section as 'Cohen, George Alfred (Cohen, Cazenove & Co)' in 1899.⁷ He appeared on the census of 31 March 1901 at 36 Gloucester Square, Hyde Park, London England, as Son, single, age 27, birthplace Paddington, London, and he was living on his own means.⁸ He was 'on his father's death to take over his father's seat in The Great Synagogue and he was the sixth and final Cohen to occupy the seat.⁹'

He married Gertrude Hannah Myer, daughter of Grenville David Myer and Rachel Matilda Simmons, on 15 October 1905 at Bayswater Synagogue, London England; and their marriage was registered in the December quarter 1905 at Paddington Registration district, London; their marriage was announced in the Jewish Chronicle of 17 November 1905 and described as 'fully choral.^1,10,11,12' George Alfred Cohen lived between 1910 and 1915 at 71 Portland Place, Marylebone, London England.^13,14,15 He appeared on the census of 2 April 1911 at St Marylebone, London England, as Head, married 1905, age 37.¹⁶ He was listed in the British Army World War I Pension Records Short Service (For the Duration of the War) as age 42 on enlistment, of 71 Portland Place, London, and was of 'Private Means'. He was recruited to the Army Service Corps (Mechanical Transport) as a Driver, Regimental number 281343, stamped at Whitehall, London, on 1 January 1917. The National Archives contain his Medal Card.^17,18,19 He was recorded on a list of United Kingdom Incoming Passengers to London arriving on 4 April 1927, on the Nippon Yusen Kaisha Line Hakusan Maru having embarked at Marseilles, France. His 'Country of Last Residence' was France and he was a 53 year old Merchant, whose 'Proposed Address in the United Kingdom' was 71 Portland Place, London.²⁰


He died on 21 February 1942; and his death was registered in the March quarter 1942 at Westminster Registration district, at age 67.^2,21 He left a will on 31 July 1942; The following notice appeared in 'The London Gazette Issue 35652 published on the 31 July 1942'

' Re GEORGE ALFRED COHEN Deceased Pursuant to the Trustee Act, 1925. NOTICE is hereby given that all persons having any claims against the estate of George Alfred Cohen, of Flat 45, Grosvenor House, Park Lane, W.1., and of Hurst Farm, Wittersham, Kent, who died on the 21st day of February, 1942 are hereby required to send particulars thereof in writing to the Westminster Bank Ltd. Alfred Louis Cohen appeared on the census of 30 March 1851 at 5 South Street, Finsbury Square, Finsbury, London England, as Son, age 14, birthplace St Luke, Middlesex, and he was a 'Scholar at home.⁶' He married Louise Marie Sophie Javal, daughter of Joseph Javal, on 17 February 1869 at Paris, Île-de-France France.^7,8,9 Alfred Louis Cohen appeared on the census of 2 April 1871 at 106 Westbourne Terrace, Paddington, London England, as Head, married, age 35, birthplace London, and he was a Member of the Stock Exchange. He was living with his Wife, Son Henry and Daughters Susan and Caroline. between 1866 and 1877.² Ellen Cohen appeared on the census of 3 April 1881 at 96 Lancaster Gate, Paddington, London England, as Wife, age 37, birthplace Finsbury, Middlesex.¹ She appeared on the census of 31 March 1901 at Kensington, London England, as ' Wife of Above', age 57, born City of London.¹³ As of 18 July 1907, Ellen Cohen was also known as Lady Ellen Swaythling.¹⁴ She died on 15 March 1919 at age 75.¹⁴ She was buried after 15 March 1919 at Edmonton Federation of Synagogues Cemetery, Edmonton, London England.^14,15 She left a will on 7 October 1919; which was proved on 6th August 1919.      Phyllis L Smithers was born in 1921; and her birth was recorded at at Chertsey record office in the December quarter 1921.¹ She was the daughter of William Charles Smithers and Edith Annie Milam.¹
