     Ernest Melbourne Hallenstein was born circa 1873 at Melbourne, Victoria Australia.8,7 He was the son of Michaelis Hallenstein and Rebecca (?).7 Ernest Melbourne Hallenstein appeared on the census of 3 April 1881 at 17 Randolph Crescent, Maida Vale, London England, as Son age 7, birthplace Melbourne, Victoria, and he was a Scholar.7 He emigrated on 19 August 1895; A 'Mr E.M. Hallenstein' was included in the "Christchurch Star" of Monday 19 August 1895 in the 'List of passengers booked for New Zealand on the "Gothic."9 '
He appeared on the census of 31 March 1901 at St James, Westminster, London England, as Single, age 27, born Victoria, Australia, and he was a Porter believed to be living in the same Household as his brother Edward.10 He was listed in 'The London London Gazette Issue 27390 published on the 24 December 1901' as follows:

     'ROYAL ENGINEERS (VOLUNTEERS).
     "East London" (Tower Hamlets), The under-mentioned Lieutenants to be Captains :—
     E. M. Hallenstein. Dated 25th December, 1901'

on 24 December 1901.11 He was listed as Hallenstein Bros. & Co. New Zealand Shippers, 17 and 18 Basinghall Street, telephone Central 4971 between 1902 and 1924.12 He married Anna Frances Jacob, daughter of Alexander Moss Jacob and Leah Jones Myer, in 1908; and their marriage was registered in the September quarter 1908 at Paddington Registration district.13,8,14,15 Ernest Melbourne Hallenstein was listed in 'The London Gazette Issue 28190 published on the 30 October 1908' as follows:

     'The undermentioned officers, from the East London (Tower Hamlets) Royal Engineers (Volunteers), are appointed to the company, with rank and precedence as in the Volunteer Force. Dated 1st April, 1908 :—
     Captain Ernest Melbourne Hallenstein'
     
on 30 October 1908.16 He was He appeared in 'The London Gazette Issue 28315 published on the 7 December 1909' as follows:

     'ROYAL ENGINEERS.
     2nd London Field Company, 1st London Divisional Engineers; Captain Ernest M. Hallenstein resigns his commission. Dated 13th November, 1909'
     
on 7 December 1909.17 He lived between 1910 and 1914 at 47 Sussex Gardens, Paddington, London England.18,19 Ernest Melbourne Hallenstein was also known as Ernest M Halsted.20,3,21,22,23,24 Ernest Melbourne Hallenstein was also known as Ernest M Halstead He is also referred to in some records as Ernest Halstead.25 He lived on 2 April 1921 at 17/18 Basinghall Street, City of London England; according to Donald Hallenstein (Farmer), who gave his name as his nearest relative of friend in the country whence he came, as 'Friends E. M. Halstead', when he arrived in New York on the SS "Mauretania" which sailed from Southampton and arrived in New York on 2 April 1921.26 He was 'The History of the Bayswater Synagogue 1863-1963' records:

     'Ernest M Halsted created an unforgettable name for his service to the Jewish Lads' Brigade......27'

He died in 1951; and his death was recorded at Marylebone Registration district in the December quarter 1951, at age 78.28 His estate was probated in 1952; The Archives of New Zealand, Dunedin Regional Office, contain Probate files for 'HALSTED Ernest Melbourne - London', from Dunedin High Court, New Zealand, dated 1952.29
