"Extracts from a Rental of the Manor of Ormesby, Co. Norfolk, England, 1610

Among the early settlers of New England, before 1640 were Henry Dow, William Estow, Robert and William Marson, John, Thomas, and William Moulton, Thomas Nudd, Robert Page, and William Palmer all of Hampton, New Hampshire, Richard Carver of Watertown, Mass, and John and William Marston of Salem, Mass. All these colonists were from Ormseby, County Norfolk, England, and most of them sailed from Great Yarmouth, co. Norfolk for New England in April 1637. Of the two parishes in Norfolk named Ormseby, Ormseby St. Margaret (with Scratby) lies on the coast of the North Sea about five miles from Great Yarmouth and its parish registers prior to 1675 are lost; Ormseby St. Michael adjoins Orseby St. Margaret on the west and its registers date from 1658.
In the Public Record Office in London there is preserved a rental of the Manor of Ormseby for the year 1610 (General Series of Rentals and Surveys, Portfolio 12, #52) and the following extracts from this rental contain every mention in the role of the family names given above....

** In this rental the following abbreviations require explanation: ob. for halfpenny, q. period for farthing., di. q. for half farthing, q. di for a farthing and a half. In the original rental, there are no periods after these abbreviations, but over them are special marks which have not been reproduced in the printed copy. Periods have been inserted also after the usual letters standing for shillings and pence. The abbreviation di. occurs also at various places in teh rental for half, being equivalent to demi-."

The Will of John Hatche of Sellynge besids Horton Monks, co. Kent, 13 April 1535. To be buried in the churchyeard of Sellynge. I give at my forefare [i.e. forthfare] for dirge and in bread and drinkfor poor people 10s. At my month's mind in like manner 6s. 8d., and at my year's mind in like manner 13s. 4d. For masses and prayers in said church for three years 13s. 4d. To the high altar there 18d. To the Trinity light 6d. To the Trinity light and the torch light 12d. apeice. To every godchild 12d. To every of my children two ewes. To my wife two kine, two hogs, six ewes, and half my household stuff. The residue of my goods to be sold to pay my debts and legacies by my executors, my wife, and Thomas Marchell, to whom I give 6s. 8d. apeicce. To John Marchall 3s. 4d. to help my wife with the writings. Witnesses: Thomas Dylnott the younger, Robert avell, and Richard Hempsted.
My last will regarding my lands. A piece of land called Mewlyng and my mill beside Hythe to be sold and the money, and also 9 pounds 20d. which Thomas Dylnott owes me, to be used to pay my debts and legacies. Hodyforth mill and half the meadow to be put to farm and the money used for the same purpose. My sons Thomas, John, and Stephen to enter into my new house and lands at their ages of twenty years. My wife to have teh other half of the meadow by the names of Lytle Somerles, great Somerles, and Rayfelde, until my children be twenty years of age, giving to each his share as he attains that age. o her also for life the house and lands at Somerffeld, with reversion at her death to my children. If all my sons die under age, reversion to my daughters, the lands being equally divided. To each daughter 40s. at marriage. If all my children die, the money to be used to have an obit kept for twenty years, and the lands to be sold and money to go to my brothers and their heirs. To Thomas Hatche, son of John Hatche the elder, 13s. 4. OVerseer: Maister Hayman, to whom I give 6s. 8d. Provded 26 April 1536. (Archdeaconry of Canterbuiry, vol 21, fo 3).
