"Matthew Barton, of Salem, Portsmouth, N.H., and Cape Porpoise, Me., shipwright, mariner, born about 1640, was living in 1729. He married first Martha -----, who was living in 1675; secondly Sarah -----; and thirdly, at Salem, 20 Dec 1694, Elizabeth (Tapley) Dickinson, daughter of John and Elizabeth (Pride) Tapley. For many years he probably divided his time between Salem and Cape Porpoise. In 1668 Matthew Barton and Martha, his wife, of Salem, sold to William Dicer of the same their dwelling house and one-fourth acre of land, by the South Harbor, Salem. In the same year he was one of the Salem petitioner against imposts. There are indications that his family lived at Cape Porpoise for some years. On 29 April 1671 Matthew Barton of Salem, mariner, deposed, aged about thirty-two years, his deposition being recorded 30 June 1671. In 1675 Martha Barton is mentioned as a temporary resident of Salem on account of the Indian troubles. In 1683 Matthew Barton bought from Hannah Simmons, administratrix of the estate of Richard Simmons, all of Salem, a house and one-sixth acre of land at Salem, for L35. In 1686 he bought from Edmond Woolland, Sr., a small piece of land adjoining, for L 6.5s. Evidently he possessed other property in Salem. In 1721 he sold to Ezekial Goltwigth a common wright in Salem, in the southeast division of common lands, granted by the last meeting of the proprietors. In 1729, being then of Salem, he sold the farm of three hundred acres, of Cape Porpoise, which was formerly the home of his father. "

Family II
Matthew Barton (son of Edward) was b. at Salem, Mass., about 1639. He was still living at Salem in 1729 when he sold the farm of 300 acres at Cape Porpoise which his father had owned. He m. 1st. Martha who was living in 1675. He m. 2nd., Sarah and on Dec. 20, 1694, he m. thirdly, the widow Elizabeth Dickinson, dau. of John and Elizabeth (Pride) Tapley. Matthew Barton was living in Salem in 1668 when he and his wife Martha sold their dwelling house and one quarter of their land in that town to William Dicer. This may have been preliminary to removal to Cape Porpoise where his father lived, because, on April 29, 1671, a time coinciding with his mother's signing of the administration papers on his father's estate he made a deposition there in which he declared himself to be of Salem and about 32 years of age. In 1675 his wife Martha is recorded as a temporary resident of Salem because of Indian troubles. In 1683 he purchased a house and lot from the estate of Richard Simmons in Salem and from then on apparently lived there. Records show that Matthew Barton was a mariner and shipwright and indications are that he operated along the seaboard living in various places, probably for a time in Portsmouth.

Barton Family of Oxford, Mass, New England Historical and Genealogical Register, 1930, Vol 84, pp. 400-421.
p 401-2
"Edward Barton of Salem, Marblehead, Portsmouth, N.H., and Cape Porpoise (now Kennebunkport), Me., was at Salem about 1640, possibly earlier, and died probably at Cape Porpoise, not later than Apr 1671. He married Elizabeth ------, who survived him. He owned a house and land in Salem, which he later exchanged for a house and lands at Marblehead. In 1646, possibly before that year, he received a grant of lands in the Portsmouth jurisdiction, evidently at Little Harbor, on the Piscataqua, and he received additional grants of land there in 1652 and 1653. He served in 1650 at Portsmouth as a trial juryman, in 1656 as a grand juryman, and in 1657 as a coroner's juryman. He took the oath of fidelity to the Massachusetts Bay Government at Exeter, N.H., in 1657. At the town meetings in 1658 and 1666 he was among those who subscribed to the minister's salary. In 1656, at Portsmouth, Susannah Trimmings, wife of Oliver Trimmings of Little Harbor, complained that she had been bewitched by Jane Walford, wife of Thomas Walford, formerly the first settler of Charleston; and among the witnesses in this case was Eliza (or Elizabeth) Barton, wife of Edward Barton. Probably about 1666 Edward Baton moved from Portsmouth to Cape Porpoise, and settled on a farm of about three hundred acres, which he bought from Anthony Littlefield. It was situated on Montague's Neck, and was bounded by Cape Porpoise River, the sea and Montague River. There he built a house. In April 1671 Elizabeth Barton, widow of Edward, and Griffin Montague gave bonds for L200, as security for Elizabeth's Barton's administration of the estate of her late husband, which was appraised at L81, the house, lands, and marsh being valued at L40. In 1729 Matthew Barton, formerly of Cape Porpoise but then of Salem sold to James Ruck of Salem, for L40, the farm of three hundred acres at Cape Porpoise, which was formerly the home of his father, Edward Barton. At the time when this deed was recorded there was also recorded the deposition of Samuel Scarlet of Marblehead, formerly of Winter Harbor and Cape Porpoise, Me., evidently a family friend, which was dated in 1714, when the deponent was about sixty-seven years old. He deposed that he well knew Edward Barton, an inhabitant of Cape Porpoise Town, that said Edward Barton possessed as his own a large tract of land situated there, on which he built a new dwelling house to take the place of the old one, that the wife and family of said Edward Barton possessed said lands and house, after said Barton's death, until they were driven out by the Indians, and that Edward Barton and his family were in actual possession of the premises about twenty years. It is thought that the widow lived for a time at Marblehead. The homestead at Cape Porpoise was deserted for many years, on account of the troubles with the Indians. Evidently the sons were scattered; and from the fragments of records still extant it seems likely that only one son, William Barton, received a recorded grant of lands from the town of Cape Porpoise. At all events, this recorded grant is the only one in existence."

Part II, About Our Early Ancestors
"(1)Edward Barton was perhaps the son of Marmaduke Barton, who came to New England about 1632; and settled in Essex County, Massachusetts. Edward may have come to Essex County at the same time as Marmaduke, for they are first heard of at about the same time. By 1640 Edward had settled in the coast town of Salem. A little later he was at Exeter and Portsmouth, New Hampshire. He was made a freeman at Exeter, N.H., 14 Jully 1657. In 1671 he had a 300-acre farm at Cape Porpus, Maine. In that year, owing to Indian outbreaks, he was forced to flee with his family to Salem, where he died in 1673. His son Edward is in the list of Freemen that took the oath of fidelity at the Court in Pemaquid, July 22, 1674.
There is very little known about Edward Barton or of his sons Edward and Matthew, except from fragmentary notes that I have taken from the 'Essex Antiquarian.' They are as follows:
'Att a Towne meetinge hild the :20 of March 1656.
'It is ordered that Jams Johnson, William Seuvey and Anthony Brakit, shall end the difference between Edward Barton & Nicholis Row; concerning their land of difference.'
Att a meetinge the 3th. of Jamuary 1652.
1. 'It is granted that each Inhabitant is to have out Lottes of ---- according unto the order under wrighten.' Edward Barton had 20 acres.
Att a Towne meetinge hild at Strabery Bank the last of January 1648.
4. 'It is likewise granted Edward Barton that no man shall sit downe between him and John Crouder: Raylls.'

Family I
Edward Barton, b. in England, came to Salem, Mass. before 1640. He d. probably at Cape Porpoise, now Kennebunkport, Maine, not later than 1671. His wife Elizabeth survived him. He exchanged his house and land in Salem for property in Marbleheard, later receiving grants of land at what is now Portsmouth, New Hampshire and moving there about 1646. He is recorded as having been a trial juryman in Portsmouth in 1650 and other records as late as 1666 show him subscribing to the minister's salary indicating that he was still living there.
