John J. Bowden, a substantial and highly esteemed citizen of Johnstown in a native of New York City, where he was born Nov. 11, 1866. He is the son of William and Margaret (Ferry) Bowden.
William Bowden was born in County Tyrone, Ireland, Oct 23, 1845. At an early age he emigrated to the United States and for a number of years lived at Dunbar, Pa. His wife was also a native of Ireland.
John J. Bowden received his education in the public schools of Dunbar, Pa., and began his career as an operator in the employ of the Pennsylvania Railroad at Connellsville. He was later stationed at Fairchange, Pa., and for 11 years was agent for the company at Dunbar, Pa. He then was connected with the superintendent's office in Pittsburgh for six years, and in 1899 was transferred to Johnstown, where he was passenger agent for six months and was later transferred to freight agent, which position he has since held.
On Oct 6, 1886, Mr. Bowden was married to Miss Olive May Stewart of Mckeesport, Pa., and the daughter of William and Anna (Soles) Stewart. William Stewart was born at McKeesport Pa., in 1841, the son of Samuel Stewart. Mrs. William (Soles) Stewart was born Oct. 1, 1845, the daughter of Lewis and Catherine (Caven) Soles. Lewis Soles was born in Murrysville, Pa., March 7, 1812. He assisted in building the First Presbyterian and First Methodist Episcopal churches of McKeesport. He was adjutant general of the Seventh Battalion of Allegheny County, and his son George served throughout the Civil war and spent six months in Libby Prison.
To Mr. and Mrs. John J. Bowden two sons were born, William Ray and Earl S. William Ray married Margaret V. Lynn, of Ridge View Park, Pa. He died Oct. 5, 1916 and his widow resides with Mr. and Mrs. Bowden. To Mr. and Mrs. William Ray Bowden one son was born, John Ray, born Oct. 5, 1911. Earl S. married Mary Ellsworth and they reside in Jacksonville, Fla.
Mr. Bowden is a deacon in the Presbyterian Church and is affiliated with the Masonic Lodge. He is a member of the Blue Lodge at Johnstown, the Commandery, Council, and Chapter at Johnston, the Consistory at Pittsburgh, and the Shrine at Altoona, Pa. He is a director of the Rotary Club of Johnstown and a member of the Finance Committee of the Chamber of Commerce. He is a Republican.

Olive or Alise May Stewart [Parents] 1, 2 was born 3 about 1864 in Pennsylvania. She died . She married John J. Bowden on 6 Oct 1886.
