During the fame Kane Revival, in Kentucky, he made a profession
of the Christian religion, and during the remainder of his life
he labored faithfully, as a minister, for the salvation of
others. During a missionary tour to the Indians, he again came
near losing his life. An Indian boy thoughtlessly touched a
burning brand to a keg of powder, blowing the rude hut to
pieces, killing two children, and injuring Samuel Boyd, who was
laid out as dead. He recovered, and for more than a score of
years was an active laborer in the cause of his Master. He was
a member of the Christian Church, then often termed
"Newlights". As a public speaker he was earnest and animated,
for one of so limited education advantages was an efficient
Christian teacher. His wife lived to the age of 88 years, and
died a Christian, 31 October 1852. They had ten children; all
but one having lived to be married, and settled as farmers and
farmer's wives, and all except one in Wayne county.

of Scotch descent
age 72 y
Samuel was engaged in the battle on Bush River in which he lost
his left eye, at the capyure of Augusta, Ga. and in the seige
of ninety-six.
Samuel enlisted in SC in the spring of 1780 as a private and
served one year under Captains Thomas and Earle and Col.
Roebuck. Again in the spring of 1781, he enlisted as private
and served one year under Col. Hays and in the spring of 1782
he enlisted as private under Captain Duvall and Col. Pickens
serving until December 1782.
While Samuel was engaged in a skirmish the company was captured
and he was left for dead, a ball having passed through his
temple taking out his right eye.

To provide home for his nine children, he removed to Whitewater
Valley; and in November, 1811, he built a tent of bark and
limbs of trees on Martindale's creek, 2 miles north of
Jacksonburg, where he entered a quarter section of land, on
which he lived until his death.
Samuel applied for a pension which was allowed and he drew the
pension until his death.
Samuel with his wife and one child, moved to Kentucky, where
they lived 23 years.
Samuel's children, these nine heads of families had 92
children; and these had so multiplied that it is safe to
estimate the descendants of Samuel and Isabella Boyd at the
present date (1871), at 550 children, grandchildren,
greatgrandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. At a social
reunion of the Boyd family in 1861, 274 of them sat down to a
dinner, more than one hundred and fifty being absent.

Private Samuel Boyd of South Carolina was a volunteer in
Continental and Militia Regiments and served under Col.
Roebuck, Major White and Capt. Thomas of the Militia. Also
served under General Green and Col. Lee of the Regular Army..
Services were all performed in South Carolina except perhaps
two months service taking the Fort of Augusta in Georgia from
the British. Served during the whole time of the seige of the
Fort of Ninety Six.. continued in the army as a Militia Solider
until Charlestown was vacated by the enemy in December, 1782
when discharged from the service after having served between
two and three years.
While Samuel was engaged in a skirmish the company was
captured and he was left for dead, a ball having passed through
his temple taking out his right eye.

While residing in Ninety Six District, he enlisted during 1780
under Capts. Thomas and Earle and Cols. Roebuck and Hayes. His
left eye was shot out in the battle on Bush River. He was also
in the battle of Augusts and the siege of Ninety Six. From the
spring of 1782 to Dec. 1782, he was under Capt. Duvall and Col.
Pickens. (Moved to Ky. and Ind.) A.A.672A (Roster of South

Samuel Boyd married Isabella 12 Dec 1785 in South Carolina. They moved
to Ke ntucky, then about 1811, migrated to Whitewater Valley, Wayne Co.,
Indiana. They are both buried in Jacksonburg Cemetery, Jacksonburg, IN,
which is 17 mi les west of Richmond, IN. They had 10 children. (Most
family members were buried at the old Jacksonburg Cemetery.) In 1788,
Samuel and Isabella and o ne child moved to Kentucky where they lived 23
years.
Samuel was of Scotch- Irish descent. In his early life, he with his
father moved to South Carolina where they enlisted in the army of the
Revolution. Having to carry through all of his subsequent life such
marks of the long terrible struggle for indep endence would instill
patriotism in the minds of his children, hence they inb ibed in early
childhood a deep and abiding hatred of the name Tory, as the Lo yalist was
called.
While Samuel was engaged in a skirmish, his company was c aptured and he
was left for dead, a ball having passed through his temple tak ing out his
right eye. When he had lain sometime, a colored woman came along , and
when she saw his condition, she concealed him under some bushes nearby,
then bought him some food and took care of him until he was able to get
aw ay. (Source; "Pioneer Life" of Elijah Martindale, and Pioneer
History of the Boyd Family by Belle Stanford, from CLAN BOYD
INTERNATIONAL.)
"Samuel w as a large and somewhat corpulent man with a ruddy face and dark
hair before it silvered with age. The loss of his left eye was a great
deformity to his person as he never tried to conceal the blemish by
shades or any kind of glas ses. I can't say they were not in use for I
think it was just about this tim e, or earlier, that Goldsmith represents
the hopeful son of the vicar of Wake field as making sale of the family
nag and buying a whole gross of green spec tacles. My grandfather chose
to wear a patch of black silk over the empty so cket and the last time I
sat on his knee and was bearded by his kisses, I tho ught he was awfully
sweet but still didn't like the looks of that eye." (Sou rce: "Elijah
Martindale")
