The Biographical Memories of Elizabeth Eichar Lake written about 1870. .
My Great - Grandfather, on the maternal side.
John Smith - We have no record of his Birth and no account of his life until about 1758 when he was taken prisoner by the Indians (then allies of The French) on Sideling Hill Western Pennsylvania. - They took him to Fort Du-Quesne, where they made him run the gauntlet! - It was a custom with them to save the lives of those who survived that terrible ordeal! - It may be some of my posterity would like to hear from me his own account of what running the gauntlet Means, as he told me with his own lips when he was an old man and blind. - The Indians stood in two lines, arm'd with stout clubs far enough apart to kep the clubs from conflicting one with another, then the prisoner was made to run between them every Indian giving him a blow with his club, if he fell no one would strike till after he got up - and was fairly started again- My Great - Grandfather told me that he fell twice, and yet recover'd himself. They spared his life, and he was a captive with them five years all this time watching for a chance to escape, they took him to Detroit, then in the possession of the French and Indians, while there a humane French man bought him and sent him home, it was supposed that this same French man saw him run the gauntlet at Fort DuQuesne, now Pittsburg.
When he arrived at home (Little York Pa) his young wife was dead! His two children John and Nancy were well and well cared for - in after years Nancy was married to Peter Eichar also of Little York _ Miss Nancy Smith! - only think what a large family the Smiths are now in these United States - I do not remember on what authority, but I have been told that the James Smith who sign'd the Declaration of Independence was my Great-Grandfathers brother.
At this early day even so long before the the war of the Revolution, the spirit of adventure was abroad, even the Germans were aroused to strike for a share of the rich lands then call'd Westmoreland. - My Grandfather Peter Eichar sold out his possession at Little York and moved to Greensburg Pennsylvania - where he invested his money in Lands near the Town - which in after years made him rich - John Smith his wife's Father went with them, and live'd with my Grand Parents during the remaining years of his life.
It was during the years of 1806 and 7 that I occasionally saw him, during little visits at my Grandmothers, nothing there delighted my young mind so much as to get seated on my little stool at my Great-Grandfathers feet, and listen to his wonderful accounts of his five years among the Indians - among the first things that I remember was his relations of incidents of thrilling interest connected with his captivity.
Peter Eichar my Grandfather and my Grandmother were consistant members of the Moravian Church. My Grandfather died in the year 1819 in the hope of glorious Immortality His wife and eleven children some of them living far distant were left to mourn his departure - Hw is the second representative of the six Generations I have known, lov'd, honor'd and respected.
"One army of the living God,
To his command we bow;
Part of the Host have cross'd the flood,
And part are crossing now"
