(1) 1804: Took up 1,000 acres of Survey No. 418 in Ohio, along the Ohio River, the center o f which contains the town of Ripley, Brown Co., OH. He made his home here and laid out the to wn, which he named Staunton, for Staunton, VA. He located his tract here because he wanted t o free his slaves, and to do it he had to remove to a free state.
(1) For his services in surveying, he was granted 40,000 acres of land, half near Point Ple asant, West Virginia, and half near Cairo, IL. On this he had to pay a large amount of taxes.
