SHERWOOD NOBLE, FOUNDER OF DIARY QUEEN STORES, DIES

Sherwood Dick "Sherb" Noble, 82 of kankakee, the founder of the Dairy Queen stores in this area, died Sunday (March 17, 1991) at Riverside Medical Center in Kankakee after a long illness.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Schreffler Funeral Home, Kankakee chapel.
Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. The Rev. Paul Stifler and Rev. Bruch Salter will officiate.

Sherwood had 2 visitations, that's why 2 stories of different times.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at estel-Perrin Funeral Home in Marshalltown, Iowa.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the United church of Christ in Clemons, Iowa. The Rev. Harry lake will officiate.
Burial will be in the clemons Cemetery.
Memorials may be made for Congretaional United Church of Christ in Kankakee and for the American Diabetes Association.
The son of the late Dr. Earl H. and Christine Dick Noble, he was born March 19, 1908 in Clemons.
More that 50 years ago, Mr. Noble opened the first Dairy Queen store and saw the business fourish as he directed 37 more stores in five northern illinois counties.
Even before starting the Dairy Queen operation, he was involved with dairy products. His interest in dairy products began as a youth when he washed milk cans at a creamery in Clemons, Iowa.
Shortly afte 1923, he enrolled in a dairy course at Iowa State College in Ames. Mr. Noble said in a 1990 Journal interview that students were "expected to get some experience in the dairy business, so I got a job at the Hutchinson Ice Cream Co. in Cedar Rapids, Iowa making mix. They had several small ice cream plants around the state and they made mix in one place and delivered it to the rest."
In 1931, Mr. Noble managed the Minerva Valley Creamery in Clemons, and seven years later opened an ice crean store in Kankakee.
In Kankakee, he met J. F.McCullough, who was the creator and distributor of a new Semi-frozen dairy dessert, and they became partners. On ugust 4, 1938, they opened Sherb's ice Cream tore on West Avenue to iintroduce soft serve ice cream and servied more than 1,600 Kankakeeans thatfirst day.
Mr. Noble was one of Kankakee area's oldest sponsors of Little league teams, tracing his first sponsorship of a team back to 1950 and Jaycee Little League. He sponsored almost a dozen baseball & junior football teams & a bowling team.
In October 1990, Mr. Noble was honored by Kankakee Area Chamber of Commerce, as Businessman of the Year. In june 1973 the Kankakee Veterans of Foreign Wars post and auziliary honored Mr. Noble with the ommunity Service Award for his suport of youth activities.
The November 1989 issue of DQ, a magazine for Dairy Queen companies & franchises, featured Mr. Nobleas the "original Dairy Queen coperator."
Mr. Noble was a Congregational United Church of Christ member in Kankakee.
For many years, he servied on the Kankakee Community College Foundation board of directors.
He was a member of the kankakee Area Chamber of Commerce and a member of the kankakee kiwanis club.
A veteran of service during World War II, he was a member of the Kankakee Veterans of Foreign Wars and Kankakee American Legion Posts.
He married Nov (?) 1946 the former Bessie M. Clark; she died Feb. 25, 1964. Surviving are his wife, the former Kaherine Hiatt, whom he married August 25, 1967; two daughters & a son-in-law, Christia A. Noble of Iowa City (Iowa), and Susan & Bruce Stevens of Cedarburg, Wisconsin; three grandchildren, Jennifer, Michael and Andrew Stevens; a brother and sister-inlaw, Howard & Connie Noble of San Jose (California) ; a sister, Dorothy Edler of Zearing (Iowa), and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Russell.
