Timothy Halsted moved with his family to Elizabethtown, N.J. in 1721. He
is credited with being the ancestor of the New Jersey Halsteds and anumber of
those in New York. While at Hempstead, he made extensive purchases of
land in the Kakiak Patent, a tract of some 35,000 acres in what is now
Orange Count and Rockland County, N.Y., which extended as far north as
Haverstraw, N.Y. and south into what is now Bergen County, N.J. One of the
two original grantees died in 1714, and his executors sold his half to a
group of men, most of whom were from Hempstead, Long Island - including
Timothy, Jonah and Jacob Halsted (Timothy's sons), associated with 14
others.

The settlement was first called Hempstead, sometimes Kakiak, then New
Hempstead, now Ramapo, then Orange (now Rockland) Co., N.Y. All of
Timothy's sons except John went there to live; Caleb later purchased a
400 acre tract of land "lying on the south side of Elizabeth Creek", onthe
south shore of Staten Island Sound, near Elizabethtown, N.J. It wasprobably
the area that came to be known as Halsted's Point.

Timothy B. Sr HALSTEAD5,128 was born in 1633 in Hempstead, Nassau Co., Long Island, NY.5,128 He died in Mar 1703 in Hempstead, Nassau Co., Long Island, NY.5,128 He is reference number 729. [NEED TO DEFINE SENTENCE: Notes (Facts Pg)]5,128 [master ged.FTW]

He resided in Hempstead all of his life. In 1658, he was in a calf listfor

five calves; and on 29 November of that year took up six acres of land. He

maintained five cows in the east herd of the town in the same year. He

was a holder of patent rights in Hempstead, this making him a proprietor

of the town.

He was chosen one of the townsmen by lot, 26 February, 1660, which was

confirmed by the local magistrates; and entered his earmark for cattle, 5

January, 1665.

Beginning in 1664, he appears in a number of business transactions and

in drawings of land. In that year, Timothy with his brother Joseph joined

a group of men who purchased a large tract of land in the Newark Bay and

Staten Island Sound district of northeastern New Jersey called Achter

Koll or Back Bay. They contributed about four pounds each to the

syndicate on the condition that, if they did not like the part of land

assigned to them when it was divided, they could withdraw, which they

did subsequently. Timothy was witness in the trial of a suit over this

land purchase at Elizabethtown, New Jersey 17 November, 1685.

He bought a horse of Robert Marvin 3 May, 1665 and sold to the latter a

mare at the same time. On 22 July, 1671 he exchanged meadows with

Thomas Ireland and sold land to John Tredwell and to Samuel Embree. He

is listed as drawing various lots of land in the town 9 April, 1677, in

June (estimated date), 1678 and on 25 December, 1678. He sold land to

Samuel Pine 5 June, 1687.

On 2 October, 1676 he was one of the signers of a round robin distributed

among certain citizens of Hempstead who bound themselves to stand

together against parties who had taken possession of "the Nick commonly

called Ye Great Neck". As a result of the physical conflict between

opposing parties, five of the villagers of Hempstead were tried for riot.

One of these was Timothy Halstead, either senior or junior, probably

senior. Those arraigned pleaded not guilty; but the court, after having

heard the evidence, found them in the wrong.

In a court held before the Constable and Overseers 5 January, 1676,

Cornelius Mott was plaintiff in an action of the case against Timothy

"Hallsted", defendant; and on 5 April, 1676, the town records report

Halstead's testimony in a suit between Samuel Denton and John Oke (i.e.,

Jan Aukeszen van Nuys). John Bedell was plaintiff in a case against

Timothy Halstead and Daniel Denton, 4 April, 1677.

He contributed two pounds to the support of the minister (the Rev.

Jeremiah Hobart) in a rate list dated 24 May, 1682. Later references are

few. He testified in a suit presented at court 2 August, 1682, and

between Cornelius Mott and William Wyatt; and entered another earmark

for livestock 13 November, 1684. On 11 July, 1691 he signed a petition

of one John Stuard to have the town grant land to the latter. On 3 March,

1700 his son-in-law Richard Valentine referred to land on which

Timothy Halstead was then still living in Hempstead.

Timothy Halstead died in March, 1703 at Hempstead, New York. The

inventory of his estate was taken 10 March, 1703 (1702-1703) and

administration of the effects was granted to the oldest son Timothy. He

was buried probably at Hempstead. (Taken from Colonial Families of

Long Island, New York and Connecticut, Volume Three, by Herbert Furman

1676, January 6.-Cornelius Mott declares that he planted a small crop of
tobacco on Timothy Halstead's land, and was to have half the crop for his
pains, and that Halstead damnified him in some corn that he had growing on
his land, and that he got two hundred rails for him, for which he wasnever
as yet paid. So he is damnified to the value of 20s. Richard Stites says,
being at Halstead's last summer, he heard him say the tobacco was between
him and Mott. Then he asked what quantity there was, and he replied he
thought about a hogshead. Goody Champion says, last summer she was at
Halstead's, and asked his wife for some tobacco, and she bid her go intothe
hovel and get some, and when she come into the house again she asked
Timothy's wife whose tobacco that was, and she said it was betweenCornelius
and them. John Treadwell says that last summer he and Abraham Smith hadsome
discourse concerning tobacco that Cornelius was aweeding of, and Abraham
said the tobacco was between Timothy and Cornelius. Thomas Fese says, "Ihad
