Following a new division of the Empire in favor of Charles "Le Chauv e", Louis II joined his brothers Lothaire and Pepin in a revolt against their f ather King Louis I, "Le Debonnaire" (also "Le Pieux") of France. When Lotaire b ecame Emperor, Louis II joined him in a fight against Charles "Le Chauve". In 8 58, Louis leaves Worms and invades his brother Charles' kingdom, with the suppo rt of Aquitaine and Bretagne. He begins to distribute the lands among counts an d bishops. Charles in turn seeks refuge in Bourgogne. In Reims, on 25 November 858, the conference of bishops condemns Louis for the cruelty of his troops, se nding Christian against Christian, and brother against brother. On 7 June 860, the brothers are reconciled in Saint-Castor de Coblence. Meanwhile the Normands pillage Amiens, Noyon, Beauvais, the Iberian peninsula and take Pisa in Italy. LOUIS II, son of LOUIS I and Ermengarde de Hasbaigne, was King of the East Franks (817-876),son of Emperor Louis I, who gave him Bavaria in 817. In the shifting conflict among his father and his
brothers, Lothair I, Pepin I, and C ahrles II, he sided
first with one, then with the other. Eventually the Treat y of Verdun (843) gave him the kingdom of the East Franks (roughly modern Germa ny). Later, part of Lothair's territory of Lotharingia came to
him. He survi ved serveral revolts by his sons,
