As soon as one enters the soaring, fourteenth-century.Perp endicular nave, however, such doubts are dispelled and thechurch seems to stret ch to infinity beyond the choir screen, certainly appearing even longer than its actual 556 feet. Workon the present church began in 1079 under the direction o fBishop Walkelin to replace the huge Saxon foundation of OldMinster that housed the relics of St. Swithun, a ninth-centurybishop whose name is forever associa ted with wet Englishsummers. A shrine was eventually erected to Swithun in the newchurch, and became an important place of pilgrimage; for a time, ony Thomas a Becket's shrine in Canterbury was more visited.Romanesque architecture from t hat firest phase of reconstructionsurvives intact in both north and south trans epts and also inthe crypt, which is no prone to flooding in winter. Problemswi th Winchester's raised water table had seriously threatenedthe cathedral's very survival at the turn of the century when itwas discovered that the original ti mber foundations weredisintegrating and causing strutural instability. Thecath edral's saviour is generally acknowledged as William Walker,a deep-sea diver wh o spent five years working in up to 20 feetof water underpinning the walls by r eplacing rotten timbers andlayers of soggy peat with countless bags of dement. Winchesterwas once capital of Wessex and then of all England during thereign of Alfred the Great, a status it retained until well afterthe Norman Conquest whe n it was gradually eclipsed by London. One of the most lavish royal events to ha ve taken place in thecathedral was the post-Dissolution wedding of Mary Tudor t oPhilip of Spain in 1554, ironically the same person who, as Kingof Spain, woul d later be sending his Armada to interrupt SirFrancis Drake's game of bowlsin P lymouth. Several of the Saxonkings who were rowned and buried here are reprsent ed by theircoloufully inscribed mortuary chests. These line the presytery, whic h is dominated by the massive, fifteenth-century stonescreen whose many delicat ely carved niches are filled with quitesuperbe modern replicas of the original saints' statues thatwere desecrated and smashed during the Reformation. TheWinc hester's windows were once adorned by sumptuous displays ofpainted glass is evi dent from those fragments that survived thevandalism inflicted ont he church by Cromwell's Parliamentariantroops during the Civil War. The confusing, coloure d patchworkof the nave's west window was created from shards and segmentsrescue d from the shattered original. Wi lliam's younger brother Henry (reigned 1100-35) succeeded to the
throne. He wa s crowned three days after his brother's death, against the
possibility that h is eldest brother Robert might claim the English
throne. After the decisive ba ttle of Tinchebrai in 1106 in France, Henry
completed his conquest of Normandy from Robert, who then (unusually even
for that time) spentthe last 28 years o f his life as his brother's
prisoner. An energetic, decisive and occasionally cruel ruler, Henry
centralised the administration of England and Normandy in t he royal
court, using 'viceroys' in Normandy and a group of advisers in Englan d to
act on his behalf when he was absent across the Channel. Henry
successfu lly sought to increase royal revenues, as shown by theofficial
records of his exchequer (the Pipe Roll of 1130, the first exchequer
account to survive). He established peaceful relations with Scotland,
through his marriage to Mathilda of Scotland.
Henry's name 'Beauclerc' denoted his good education (as the youn gest son,
his parents possibly expected that hewould become a bishop); Henry w as
probably the first Norman king to be fluentin English. In 1120, his
legiti mate sons William and Richard drowned in theWhite Ship which sank
in the Engli sh Channel. This posed a succession problem, as Henry never
allowed any of his illegitimate children to expect succession to either
England or Normandy.
He nry had a legitimate daughter Matilda (widow of Emperor Henry V,
subsequently married to the Count of Anjou). However,it was his nephew
Stephen (reigned 113 5-54), son of William the Conqueror'sdaughter Adela,
who succeeded Henry after his death allegedly caused by eating too many
lampreys (fish) in 1135, as the barons mostly opposed the idea ofa
female ruler.

BIOGRAPHY: Henry was in reality a usurper. He impriso ned his older brother, Robert in Cardiff Castle in Wales, and it is said he had Robert's eyes put out. Henry reigned thirty-five years, not only over England, but over one third of France. In 1120 the White Ship went down on a hidden roc k in the English Channel with the Crown Prince on board and it is said Henry I is never known to have smiled again. He had only one child left, Maude-Matilda, then a widow of the German Emperor Henry V. For political reasons she was next married to Geoffrey of Anjou, a boy of sixteen, ten years her junior. After th e death of Henry I there was civil war between Matilda and her nephew Stephen, who got the throne for nineteen years. At one point in this contest Matilda had to escape from the Robert Doyley tower of Oxford Castle by sliding down a rope with gloved hands, the rope held by her favorite knight, Alain. She, with a fe w others dressed in white to avoid detection, crossed in the snowy night over t he frozen Thames. The condition of the English people was deplorable during the reign of Henry I, owing to the blood-curdling cruelty of the Barons. Henry est ablished a vigorous police system to check this, and tried to stop counterfeiti ng the money by mutilations. He oppressed his people by taxation.

BIOGRAPHY: Henry I was born in the year 1068---a factor he himself regarded as highly sig nificant, for he was the only son of the Conqueror born after the conquest of E ngland, and to Henry this meant he was heir to the throne. He was not an attrac tive proposition: he was dissolute to a degree, producing at least a score of b astards; but far worse he was prone to sadistic cruelty---on one occasion, for example, personally punishing a rebellious burgher by throwing him from the wal ls of his town.

BIOGRAPHY: At the death of William the Conqueror, Henry was left no lands, merely 5,000 pounds of silver. With these he bought lands from h is elder brother Robert Curthose, Duke of Normandy, only to see them taken back again a few years later by Robert, in unholy alliance with his brother William Rufus.

BIOGRAPHY: Henry could do little to avenge such treatment, but in En gland he found numerous barons who were tired of the exactions and ambitions of their king. He formed alliances with some of these, notably with the important De Clare family. He and some of the De Clares were with William Rufus on his l ast hunting expedition, and it is thought that the king's death was the result of Henry's plotting.

BIOGRAPHY: Certainly he moved fast to take advantage of it; leaving Rufus's body unattended in the woods, he swooped down on Wincheste r to take control of the treasury. Two days later he was in Westminster, being crowned by the Bishop of London. His speed is understandable when one realises that his elder brother, Robert [Curthose], was returning from the crusade, and claimed, with good reason, to be the true heir.

BIOGRAPHY: Henry showed grea t good sense in his first actions as King. He arrested Ranulph Flambard, Willia m's tax-gatherer, and recalled Anselm, the exiled Archbishop. Furthermore, he i ssued a Charter of Liberties which promised speedy redress of grievances, and a return to the good government of the Conqueror. Putting aside for the moment h is many mistresses, he married the sister of the King of Scots, who was descend ed from the royal line of Wessex; and lest the Norman barons should think him t oo pro-English in this action, he canged her name from Edith to Matilda. No one could claim that he did not aim to please.

BIOGRAPHY: In 1101 Robert Curtho se invaded, but Henry met him at Alton, and persuaded him to go away again by p romising him an annuity of Ð2,000. He had no intention of keeping up the paymen ts, but the problem was temporarily solved.

BIOGRAPHY: He now felt strong en ough to move against dissident barons who might g Parents: . Parents: . Parents: The Conqueror/Duke Of Nor Guillaume DE NORMANDIE and Countess Of Flanders Mathilda MATILDA. Parents: . Parents: . Parents: . Parents: .
