[moses.ftw]

Eva's father, Albert Douglas Elkins and other members of his family moved to north Texas from Johnson County, Illinois. He met and married Eva's mother, Lucinda James and they married. Her mother died right after the birth of her second child. Eva's father remarried and moved the family to the Texas panhandle. Her Uncle Charley talked her father into moving to the 'Staked Plains' when she was nine years old. They lived for several years in a dugout on the plains in Swisher County, Texas. She had several half brothers and sisters. Her youngest half sister says Eva was raised by her grandparents, Henry and Louisa Elkins. I have a picture of Grandma and her Aunt Nora when they were in their teens. They were close in age. We used to stop and visit Aunt Nora when we took Grandma Boyd to Tulia for the Elkins reunion every year in August. Aunt Nora always had four o'clocks growing in her flower beds.

Grandma lived with Uncle Shorty (Amos) and Aunt Sarah after Grandpa Boyd and Uncle Emery died. I loved her homemade peanut butter syrup on pancakes. She was an excellent seamstress and did a lot of sewing for Uncle Shorty and Aunt Sarah's daughter, Sue. Grandma dipped snuff and used to cut twig off the trees and smash the ends and use them to get the snuff out of the jar. We always had lots of snuff glasses. Because her eye was crossed, she usually wore a kerchief over her head and the one eye. She was a small woman with blue eyes and very dark hair. She was extremely bent. Don't know what caused it. Often wondered if she had ankylosing spondylitis like I was diagnosed with. The Dr. said it was genetic but I never figured out from where it came since Mama and Daddy didn't seem to have it. She was not completely gray when she passed away in her 80's. Grandma had a big, soft, fluffy feather bed. We thought it was heaven to get to sleep with her in her feather bed. Also she had a big trunk in her room that she kept her real special stuff in. The Boyds always had a Christmas get together as long as Grandma was living. After her death they stopped.

Toward the end of her life, Grandma Boyd had no appetite. She said pork was the only meat that tasted good. She was very anorexic and didn't eat. She was a very sweet lady and wonderful grandmother. When she came to visit us as she always did, she would stay two or three weeks with us. At night she sucked on horehound candy at bedtime. I acquired a taste for the stuff. Now I can't find it. She would sleep with me and we'd talk. I would ask her questions about the olden days. If only I remembered half of what she told me.
