Letter from Allamarie Purefoy

No address given and undated but probably written June 1847, two months
after birth of Richard Dancer (see middle of letter)
Written on four sides plus crosswriting on first side

My dear young friend
It gave me much pleasure to hear from you, and your letter should not
have remained so long unanswered but my time is so very busily occupied
that I seldom get an opportunity to correspond with absent friends. I
hope you are comfortably settled and enabled to do your duty in every
respect. The management of children is a very arduous/
and important employment & one especially requiring the wisdom which
comes from above.
We have much cause for The gratitude to Almighty God that during the
past trying years of famine & sickness we have been preserved in health
peace & plenty. Fever is very prevalent in the neighbourhood. upwards
of 1 hundred in hospital - Doctor Purefoy kept very busy amongst them.
We have now 8 children the elder ones much grown & improved. they can
play pretty well on the piano and & are learning french. Sybella has
gone to her grandmama for a fortnight she lives in the neighbourhood of
Dublin and had not seen Sybella for a year. Johnnie has grown a fine
handsome boy. Angel nice little girl & Jenny a very little - they
remember your state as quite - . In addition to these we have Allamaria
a dear little child quite like a wax doll. & Richard Dancer the
youngest just two months I try to nurse but generally fail /
after 4 or 5 months. Dear mama's health is much broken and she is now
without one of her own children. My sister Miss A. Dancer was married
last April & is settled near Lucan. Miss Mary & Dorothy are still at
Hilton Papa is wonderfully well. Mrs Hutchinson has two children & Miss
Shelley is a very nice girl. & Mr & Mrs [?]French with their 5 boys are
very well Also Mrs B[?]urns Miss Lloyd is very delicate & is now from
home for her health. Why do you not come by this on your way to Dublin
we shall always feel glad to /
see you & shall always remember your anxious care of our children when
you were with us. I often wished for the pleasure of seeing Lady
[?]Howberton, but do not expect to leave home for a long time I hope
your sister is now in good health and also that you are strong and
healthy. Poor Mrs Homan is very delicate. She is now in Dublin for
change of air. I must now conclude and believe me joined by Dr Purefoy
and the children in kind wishes for your present and Eternal happiness

Signs herself J.E.H. in letters to her daughter, such as this, on the
occasion of her engagement to Major Henry Sargint
"Thursday
My beloved child
Your note was handed to me at the breakfast table and drew from my old
eyes a few motherly tears. Mixed feelings of pleasure and sorrow are my
present experience - Joy that you have found a heart and arm to love
and lean on. May they ever be worthy of the trust and respond to the
maiden confidence of your young and confiding heart - Sorrow, that my
first loved most cherished blossom should cease to bloom before my eyes
and grace my board except as a visitor- but, dear child, you will I
trust bring all your energies for good to bear on your new life and be
to your husband and to his family a sincere and loving member of their
home circle.
Nothing wonderful occurred after you left. Everyone said goodbye. The
gentlemen would not stay although I had beef and mutton down for them.
Sir T.B.D. [Thomas Bernard Dancer] and our own men went to drive to The
Abbey and then dined quietly and finished the evening - with an attack
on Amyrald to marry- which caused some fun. Amyrald left today, Sir
