Page 133, Crockett Cousins, Katheryn E. Jones:
"Samuel Crockett served in the Cumberland County, Pennsylvania Militia as a private in 1780-81. Immediately after he married Sarah Wilson in Cumberland County, he must have set out to make his home in Tennessee for Goodspeed's History records the fact that Samuel Crockett built a fort in the Fall of 1788 in the present county of Robertson. Deeds in Robertson County show Samuel bought 311 acres of land on Brown's Fork of Karr's Creek from Elizabeth Aires etal on 20 June 1798. Other deeds show he witnessed a purchase of land in 1797 by John Crockett and a purchase of land by William Crockett. Bible records show a brother, James Crockett, died in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, on 2 September 1795. It is likely that John and William then moved to Robertson County, Tennessee, probably with their mother, Margaret. No record of them can be found in the 1800 Cumberland County, Pennsylvania census."
"Samuel Crockett of Robertson County, Tennessee later bought land in the present county of Obion, Tennessee. There are numerous deeds on file in Obion County made by Samuel and his sons.

William Crockett of Greenwood Twp, Cumberland Co, PA (now
Perry Co) and his family of Robertson Co, TN and beyond
Kathryn E. Jones, Crockett Cousins, Chapter X, Robertson
County, Tennessee Crocketts, begins with these Crocketts in
Cumberland Co, PA. William and Margaret Crocket are believed to
have been parents of Samuel, James, John, and William. Possibly
there were daughters, but no names have been learned. James died
in PA. Samuel, John, and William moved to Robertson Co, TN.
Samuel (or someone in his family) wrote dates in a family Bible.
William [born perhaps ca 1730] and Margaret Crockett [July
1734, Ireland] can be found in Greenwood Twp, Cumberland Co, PA
which was formed 1767. Greenwood has been divided into several
townships and boroughs over time. Most of it went to Perry Co,
formed 1820 from the northern part of Cumberland, though some
went to neighboring Juniata Co. Wildcat Ridge runs several miles
east-west through present-day Greenwood Twp. On its south is
Perry Valley, formerly called Wildcat Valley, bounded on the
south by Buffalo Mountain. Several branches of Wildcat Run are
in the southwestern corner of the twp, east of the Juniata River.
William paid for a warrant in 1771 and had the land surveyed
in 1773. From 1773 to 1789, he was responsible for taxes on 100
acres, of which he only cleared 10 to 30 at any time. He had one
or two horses and the same number of cattle, and some lists show
a few sheep. There is a gap in the tax records until 1793.
William was enumerated on the 1790 census. Apparently two of the
sons (probably James and William Jr) lived at home as there were
three males 16+. On 4 July 1792, Cumberland Co issued letters of
administration on William Crockett to James Crocket and Samuel
Utter. As administrators, they had the land patented in trust
for the heirs of William Crockett. James Crocket was responsible
for taxes in 1793, in which year William was taxed as a freeman
(21 and single). In 1795, Margaret was taxed on 270 acres. The
1799 tax and 1800 census have no Crocketts in that region.

Puzzles: Why does Margaret's date of birth appear in the "Samuel
Crockett Bible" but not her date of death? Why is William Senior
not mentioned at all? A descendant once claimed to know that
Samuel acquired the Bible at Carlisle in 1805 on a trip back
East. (Whom was he visiting? His in-laws had moved to Ohio by
then.) Is there a lot of damage? Are the entries all in one
handwriting as though inscribed at the same time retrospectively,
or does the handwriting change? Samuel's death date appears; did
Sarah do the writing?
As for connections to other families, I personally have not seen evidence linking them with the Huguenot family that changed its name to Crockett when they left France for Ireland or with any of the other Crockett families who came from Ireland and Scotland to various parts of the New World. As you are probably finding, many Crocketts claim kinship with "Davy's" family, but never (that I have seen) with evidence (Bible records, deeds, wills, probate, etc). That doesn't mean it wasn't so, just that the proof is lacking.

From the Internet:
Now for your family. In 1850 your J. W. Crockett was living next to Catherine Crockett who was probably his stepmother. He probably died before 1860 since his wife Polly and their children, were living alone in 1860. His mother was Mary (Sullivan), first wife of James Crockett and younger sister of Catherine (Sullivan), James' second wife. All three are buried in Swift Cemetary, Montgomery Co., TN. James was the son of Samuel and Sarah (Wilson) Crockett who moved to Robertson Co., TN from Cumberland Co., PA in 1788. It appears that J.W.'s widow, Polly, married your Preston Phillips after the 1860 census was taken and that his son and Polly and J.W.s daughter were married when they grew up. Would like to hear more about their descendants and where they lived. I'm sorry to say we don't seem to have a match on our Phillips. My line was in VA by 1660 and lived in southern Va. I do have a little more information on your family if you would like to have it. I would appreciate anything you care to share with me on any Crockett line.

"Samuel Crockett was born on Dec 04, 1759 in Cumberland County, PA. Samuel
served in the Revolutionary War in the Cumberland County, PA Militia.
He married Sarah Wilson on Sept 25, 1787 in that same county and apparently very quickly began their move towards Robertson County, TN.
Their family Bible lists their first child Wilson Crockett as being born in Kentucky in July 1788.
Upon arriving in Robertson County (TN) in 1788, Samuel Crockett built a fort, which served as a safe haven for his own and other early settlers of this county...
...Samuel and Sarah, along with some of their eleven children are buried at Mt. Sharon (Cumberland Presbyterian Church). Time and weather has damaged and
broken Samuel's tombstone."
"The Mt. Sharon Church Cemetery Association has been making needed repairs to tombstones however, ... Samuel's can't be fixed."

William and Margaret Crocket are believed to have been the parents of Samuel, James, John, William, Peggy (Wilson), Jane (Shannon), and Mary (Utter). James died young in PA. Samuel, John, and William moved to Robertson Co, TN. Samuel (or someone in his family) wrote dates in a family Bible. Samuel was the father of William who sounds like the one for whom you have been looking. Samuel and Sarah (Wilson) Crockett are buried in Robertson County, Tennessee.
For everything I have ever found on William and Margaret in PA, and some of what you will want to know about Samuel, see my posting "Re: Samuel CROCKETT's Family, PA and TN" of 5/01/1998. If you use GenForum's "Search This Forum" and enter "Greenwood" as a keyword, you'll go right to it.
Several other persons have posted to GenForum and to the CROCKETT-L discussion list on Rootsweb who are descended from William and Margaret.
Kathryn E. Jones, Crockett Cousins, Chapter X, Robertson County, Tennessee Crocketts, begins with these Crocketts in Cumberland Co, PA. Note 4 of Chapter X (page 134) says: "Buried at Crockett Cemetery off Cooperstown Road, Robertson County, Tenn, is a Nancy Crockett, "wife of William Crockett", born 22 Oct. 1796, died 11 Dec, 1818. She is probably the wife of this William Crockett. Descendants say William moved to Saline County, Ark. and married again. A William Crockett is in the 1840 and 1850 Saline County, Ark. Census. In 1850 Saline County Mortality Schedule is listed the death of Sarah Crockett, age 56, b. Ky, 1794, d. Oct. 1850, very likely the second wife of William. In 1860 Mortality Schedule of Pulaski County, Ark. (adjoining Saline County), there is listed the death of William Crockett, b. Tenn. c. l792, d. May 1860."
Actually, although the census taker enumerated William Crockett in early October 1850, if he followed instructions to record deaths in the year prior to June 1850, then William's wife would have died in October 1849.
William was listed as a taxpayer in Saline Co, AR in 1838 and 1839.
As of the first edition (1984), Mrs Jones had as known children:
William b. cl827,T.
Nathaniel Crockett b. cl831,Mo.
Elizabeth Crockett b. cl834,Mo.
She notes: "William, Nathaniel and Elizabeth are taken from Saline Co., Ark. census only." That indicates that only a little was known from descendants. It would not be surprising if Martha L was overlooked because she was married by 1850.
It is useful to know about CROCKETT-L list in case you do not already use it. For the time, go to
and enter Crockett as the list to examine. Enter keywords as instructed and you will find some interesting materials.
I tried cataloging Crocketts in PA before 1800 and am not kin in any way to any Crocketts. I have no doubt that you will find others out there who can help more with what happened to the Crocketts after PA. I hope this proves a worthwhile lead for your research.
