What we now call Lamar County was formed from Marion, Fayette, and Pickens counties in February of 1867 and named Jones County, in honor of E.P. Jones of Fayette County. In November of the same year, the county was abolished, but was recreated in October 1868 as Sanford County. The name was changed to Lamar County in 1877.
