CHIEF VANN HOUSE
Springplace, Murray County, Georgia

As a child of 8, I remember visting
the Chief Vann House.
To me it seemed so large, the
rooms, the staircase that seem to go on forever, even the furniture of
that era when this house held such a special place. I wished I had
not returned as an adult! The AWE was gone.
A house this size built without
a single nail, I was amazed as I ran my hand over the pegs. The history
of the family who occupied this home was a story
not written anywhere else.
That story can be found throughout Georgia history and the history of the
Cherokee Nation.
My Grandmother was Lillie Mae Stephens Ellis daughter of Earl Stephens and Susian Green - A real Cherokee Indian!
She took us to Springplace Cemetery where a large marble carved headstone had the left upper corner covered in blood. We were told the stone had been replaced and the red appeared on the new stone. No, I don't remember the name on the stone just my Grandmother's story.
UPDATE: Nov of 1999
While looking through the 1880
census for Murray County, I found a Hugh
Cheek and his children, including
a son Ralph, living in Springplace. A call
to my 1st cousin verified that
this was her Father Ralph and the family
had just moved down from North
Carolina and were living....where else?
In the Chief Vann House.
