Working notes:

Bob, Sanders WHITSON is a tough guy to find -- as you already know. I searched in Texas and Tennessee for the 1880 Census and could not find him. I also searched the Nationwide Index for 1880 and could not find him. Might he have had another name? I also searched all of the Saunders's in TX and TN and didn't get any that looked like the right one. Assume he was b: circa 1860.

The IGI shows:
Saunders WHITSON b: 1830 Cocke, Tennessee
father: William WHITSON mother: Delania
source: Film 1395863 an LDS submission

This one seems to be too old.

However the 1900 Census showed the only WHITSON in Collin Co was:
Justice Precinct 2, Collin Co. Texas
William WHITSON head age 40 b: Dec 1859 married 5 years b: TN fath b: TN moth b: TN Occ: farmer
Mary WHITSON wife age 30 b: Oct 1869 3 children and 3 living b: Arkansas fath b: Arkansas mother b: Tennessee
Madge WHITSON daughter b: Sep 1895 age 4 b: TX
Bertha WHITSON daughter b: Sep 1897 age 2 b: EX
Ethel WHITSON daughter b: Feb 1899 age 1 b: TX
Elizabeth WHITSON mother b: Jun 1836 age 64 had 5 children and 2 are still living b: TN fath b: TN mother b: South Carolina

Wonder if this William WHITSON might be Sanders WHITSON's brother??

Earl Ross

Working notes:

Bob -- My guess would be that Sanders WHITSON is a younger brother to William. The father was SAUNDERS Whitson and he named his older son after his father William -- which is the 'old country' naming pattern.

Collin Co. was not created until 1846 from Fannin Co. -- so I checked the 1880 Census for WHITSON's in Fannin Co. and found a large family with the Head being Matthew.

When your brace comes off your hand you may want to make a trip to the LDS Family History Center. They can order for you the Collin Co. County Clerk TX marriage records. The records are available from Salt Lake City for 1846-1913 and the Index is available from 1846-1977.
Film 1289594 is the S-Z index that you probably want to order first.
