Joe B. Sullivan for Frank M. Baker who was fatally injured by a hit and run
driver Christmas Eve night, near his home north of Earle. He was brought to the
office of Dr. J. T. Irby and was given first aid treatment. He died enroute to

Aug. 20. He was preceded in death by his

Miller Brown; daughters, Geraldine Tripe and Frances Clemmons; sons, Charles
Brown and Ray Brown; sister, Myrtle Brown; and five grandchildren and 13

When his deafness prevented his hearing commands to hold up his hands, Nelson
Burnett, 32, farmer, living near Earle, was shot through the stomach by
highwaymen Saturday night [Christmas Eve] at 11 o’clock. He was walking home
from Earle at the time. He was found in the road about 45 minutes later by

Cloar, a Realist Painter Of Rural America, Is Dead at 80 - Carroll Cloar, a Realist painter whose
1966 painting of children holding an American flag was reproduced on a poster
commemorating President Clinton's inauguration, died on Saturday at his home in
Memphis. He was 80. He had cancer for several years and died of a
self-inflicted gunshot wound, said his wife, Patricia Sandstead Cloar.
Mr. Cloar was born on his family's
farm near Earle, Ark., on Jan. 18, 1913, and throughout his life he used images
of rural America in his work, sometimes portraying events from his own life,
including the death of a childhood friend in a fall from a tree. He studied at
Southwestern College in Memphis (now known as Rhodes College) and the Memphis
Academy of Art before coming to New York in the late 1930's, where he attended
the Art Students League. He won an Edward MacDowell Scholarship at the league
in 1940 and a Guggenheim fellowship in 1946. Realism, Surrealistically. In
World War II, he served in the Army Air Forces and spent most of the next 10
years traveling around the world, returning in Memphis in 1955.
Mr. Cloar's Realism was sometimes compared to Edward
Hopper's, sometimes to Ben Shahn's and it also had a distinct Surrealist slant.
He made his New York debut in a group show at the gallery of Edith Gregor
Halpert in the late 1940's and exhibited regularly in the city, at the Alan
Gallery in the 1950's and 60's and at the Forum Gallery in the 70's and 80's. His
most recent New York exhibition was at the Schmidt-Bingham Gallery in 1989. In
1991, a retrospective of his work was held at Memphis State University. His
work is represented in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the
Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Wadsworth
Atheneum in Hartford and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in
Washington.
In addition to his wife, he is
survived by two stepdaughters, Eve Harrington of Memphis and Ann Harrington
Miller of Auburndale, Fla., and three grandchildren.

Mrs. Mary Lynn Crim, age
63, of Forrest City, died Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2007, at the St. Bernards Hospital in
Jonesboro. Mrs. Crim was born April 3, 1944, in Wynne, the daughter of Verner
Hankins and Dorothy Rhoderick. She lived in Forrest City most of her life and
worked at General Industries and Sanyo. She married Joe Crim in 1975, and he
survives her, along with a daughter, Sherri Davenport of Caldwell; a
step-daughter, Terri McCrary of Forrest City; two sons, Clifton Meredith of
Mississippi and Troy Meredith of Forrest City; a stepson, Joe Crim Jr. of
Nevada; two sisters, Patsy Rhodes and Sherry Cartillar, both of Forrest City;
one brother, Carthel Hankins of Forrest City; 13 grandchildren and four
great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Donald McLaughlin, in
2003. Visitation for Mrs. Crim will be held on Friday, Nov. 16, 2007, from 6 to
8 p.m. at Stevens Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Nov.
17, 2007, at 11 a.m. at Stevens Funeral Home. Burial wil follow in Gibson Bayou

Tenn., formerly of Earle, Ark., self-employed insurance agent, died Tuesday at
his home. Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Roller-Citizens Funeral Home
in West Memphis with burial in Gibson Bayou Cemetery in Earle. He was a
Presbyterian. He leaves a son, Frank Daniels of Old Hickory, Tenn.; three
sisters, Doris Austin of Summit, Ill., Carolyn Harrison of Illinois and Linda
Carajohn of York, Ill.; four brothers, William Daniels of Downers Grove, Ill.,

Mrs. Bessie Mae Drew, widow of Mr. Bob Drew, who died last Friday at her home
here. She was 66. The Rev. Morris Whitman officiated. Burial was in Gibson Bayou Cemetery with
Citizens Funeral Home in charge. Mrs.
Drew was born in Tyronza and had spent most of her life in Earle. She owned and operated a grocery store near
her home. She leaves two sons, Lee Drew
of Forrest city and Bobby Drew of Earle; three daughters, Mrs. Harold Annis,
Mrs. Richard Gibson of Earle and Mrs. Jim Meredith of Lockport, Ill., a
brother, F. D. Winningham of Earle; a sister Mrs. Lon Webber of Wynne, seven

R. L. “BOB” DREW – Friday, April 13, 1951 – Earle

R. L. “Bob” Drew, a lifelong
resident of Earle and Crittenden County died at his home here Tuesday morning
at 4:15, following a lingering illness.
He had been in a Wynne Clinic a week preceding his decease. Funeral
services were held at the Assembly of God Church, Wednesday afternoon at 2:00
o’clock with Rev. J. S. McMahan officiating.
Burial was in Gibson Bayou Cemetery.
Holt Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. “Bob” as he was familiarly
known to the majority of our older citizens had been engaged in farming and
other vocations until 1942 when he opened a small store and blacksmith shop on
the east border of Earle where he enjoyed a lucrative business. His pleasant smile, and unfailing good humor
and unselfish generosity made friends of all with whom he came in contact. His passing is a loss to the community.
Besides his wife, Mrs. Bessie Mae Drew, he is survived by three daughters, Mrs.
Harold Annis and Mrs. Rosie Cox of Earle and Mrs. Jim Merideth of Osceola. Two sons, R. L. Drew Jr, Earle and Rector
Drew of Forrest City. Two sisters, Mrs.
Sallie Markham of DesArc, and Mrs. Bertie Davis of Hawkum [Holcomb], Mo.

were held last Thursday afternoon at the Earle Baptist Church for Mr. Willie
Fisher Sr., who died at his home here Wednesday after a long illness. Rev. Joe B. Sullivan officiated. Burial was in Gibson Bayou Cemetery. Holt Funeral Home in charge. Mr. Fisher was
born in Alabama January 2, 1890. He came
to Arkansas at the age of three, and had lived in Earle for the past 28
years. He was a Methodist. He is

whom he made his home; George Fisher of Portageville, Mo. and Willie Fisher

of Parkin, formerly of Earle and Senatobia, Miss., died Sunday, Feb. 22, at her
residence. Born in Red Bay, Ala., she was a homemaker and a Baptist. Survivors
include two sons, Raymond J.R. Carter of Hernando, Miss., and Benjamin Roger
Carter of Tupelo, Miss.; seven daughters, Dora Frances Oakes of Lake Cormorant,
Miss., Betty Ann Patrick of Looxahoma, Miss., Scotty Tubbs of Delmar, Joann
Holt of Parkin, Deredia Ann Grandy of Horseshoe Lake, Rose May Wilkerson of
Wyatte, Miss., and Polly Ann Mangrum of Arkabutla, Miss.; 17 grandchildren; and
22 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Oather
Nathaniel Carter; her second husband, Bernard Flock; and her parents. Funeral
services will be at 2 p.m. today at Thompson-Wilson Funeral Home in Wynne, with

CHERRY VALLEY -- Wesley Dale Frost,
57, of Cherry Valley died Wednesday, Sept. 21, at CrossRidge Community Hospital
in Wynne. He worked on the Sisk farm in
Cross County and was a Baptist. Survivors include two sons, Randy Frost of
Tyronza and Coy Tarking of Kansas; a daughter, Rhonda Hairell of Jonesboro; two
brothers, Cletis Frost of Cherry Valley and Bill Gestring of Benton; three
sisters, Maratha Johnson of Kennett, Mo., Carolyn Marrah of Bald Knob and Linda
Robbins of Earle; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his
parents, Lesley Jasper and Velma Onlene Crick Frost; a brother; and two
sisters. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Thompson-Wilson Funeral
Home in Wynne. Burial will be in Gibson Bayou Cemetery at Earle. Pallbearers
will be Chris Jacobs, Bill Potter, Bill Smith, Wesley Smith and Loyd Williams.

by one our friends pass away in the arms of the death angel. On the 7th inst. At 10 o’clock
A.M. death entered the home of Ed Fullwood and took from its midst the husband
and father. Ed was 33 years old and
leaves his wife and two small children, two sisters, and a brother, and last
but not least, a fond and loving mother and a host of friends. He died within two miles of where he was
reared and was a good citizen full of energy.
He was building a home, for himself and family, with the hope of
enjoying it in after years with his wife and little ones, but alas – death came
and fond hopes blighted. Weeping friends
and tender hands laid his remains to rest in the church-yard at Gibson
Bayou. He is gone but not

Bernards Medical Center. She was a homemaker and a member of the Church of God.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Sammy Bolden, and sister, Doris Bolden.
Survivors include daughters, Nellie Boyles, Misty Scott and Gloria Shempert;
parents, George Bolden and Florie Duncan; brothers, James Bolden and John

Hoyt Gilmer, 83, of Livingston,
Texas, formerly of Earle, died Tuesday.
Survivors are two sons, Frank Gilmer of Livingston, Texas, and James
Gilmer of Lufkin, Texas; five daughters, Mary Savage of McKenzie, Tenn., Patricia
Whipple of Jacksonville, Jessie Morrow of Marion, Helen Highland of Texarkana
and Brenda Stevenson of Corinth, Miss.; a brother, Doc Gilmer of Colt; 30

retired registered nurse from the Memphis Mental Health Hospital, died June 17th,
2003 at her home in Memphis. Graveside
services were June 19, at Gibson Bayou Cemetery in Earle. She was a Presbyterian. She leaves two
daughters: Phyllis Glasgow and Linda Gumm, both of Memphis; two sons: Mitch
Glasgow of Maryville, TN, and Frank Glasgow, of Mountain View, a brother:

Mr. Gunn was a pioneer resident of Earle having moved here in 1904. During his active career he was in the
grocery and market business and served the people of this vicinity for some 30
years in this capacity. Ill health
caused him to retire from his chosen profession some 11 years ago, most of which
time he spent away from Earle.
He
is survived by three sons, Dr. J. V. Gunn, W. T. and Earl Gunn; two sisters,
Mrs. W. T. Ingram Mrs. Luetta Crimm, both of Earle. Burial was at Gibson Cemetery.

Mrs. Mahala CRAVENS Harris wife of
Nathan S. Harris died at 11 o’clock p.m., Dec. 10, 1917. She was a native of
Wayne, County Ill., being born there, March 1, 1854. She professed religion in
her fifteenth year, and was at the time baptized into the faith of the Baptist
church by Rev. Cal Allen. She died a consistent member of the Baptist church of
Earle. She married Mr. Harris, Dec. 10, 1874. She was the mother of seven
children. There survives her four of the children, Mr. William Harris, of
Curtis, Ark.., and Mary E. Ross, Mrs. Sarah E. Hite, and Flossie G. Sloan of
this place. We laid her to rest under the snow crest sod at Gibson Bayou, and
we think of her as in a world as spotlessly white as the snow; and as in a rest
as peaceful as the silence in which we left her.

EARLE MAN MEETS TRAGIC DEATH. S. R.
Montcalm, of Bonita, La., Struck by Train.

S. R.
Montcalm, 85, of Bonita, La., met a tragic death last Tuesday afternoon, Feb.
3, when he was struck by a fast moving passenger train. Death was instantaneous. Mr. Montcalm, whose
hearing was impaired, had just left his home to walk up town, and as was his
custom, he walked down the railroad right-of-way. He had just crossed a cattle guard when the
train, traveling at great speed, approached him from the rear, and despite the
warning cries from his wife and several other witnesses he failed to hear the
train in time to get out of its path. Mr. Montcalm, who was of French
parentage, was born at sea. He moved to
Earle 40 years ago when this territory was almost a virgin forest, and lived
here continually for 50 years, operating a blacksmith and wood-working
shop. He was a very successful business
man, and through his kindness, fair dealings and cheerful disposition made
hundreds of staunch friends in this community who were both shocked and grieved
at his untimely passing. He was a
Christian man, his faith being manifested by a wholesome respect for religion
in situations and a profound reverence for his Lord. Mr. Montcalm had been
living in Bonita, La., for the past ten years and when he heard of the murder
of his friend and co-worker of former years, Mr. E. L. Byrn, which sad event
occurred several weeks ago, he requested that he be buried beside him at Gibson
Bayou Cemetery in this city when his days on earth were ended. The request is being granted and interment
will be at Gibson Bayou. Funeral services are incomplete as we go to press,
awaiting the arrival of his oldest son, Rector, who is on his way here from New
Jersey. Besides his widow, who has been a devoted wife for 49 years, he leaves
three sons, Raul, of Bastrop, La.; Ravel, of Bonita, La., and Rector, of New
Jersey. The Enterprise joins a host of friends in offering heartfelt sympathy

WILLIAM THOMAS NELSON – Family History from the “Earle
Epic”
William Thomas Nelson was born in
Crawfordsville Feb. 21, 1878 and died Jan. 8, 1932. He was buried at Gibson Bayou. He was married to Ada Mae Flora in 1902. They moved to Earle in the early 1900’s and
farmed for C. W. Cloar. Ada Mae Flora
was born May 8, 1883 and died Aug. 28, 1961 (not noted if she was also buried
at Gibson Bayou). Their children were Carrie Onae Nelson, John Franklin Nelson,
Clara Jane Nelson (Miller), William Nelson, Cecil Thomas Nelson, and Edward
Nelson.

Sunday at Veterans Administration Medical Center, Memphis. Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday

charge. Mr. Norvell, 70, was an Earle
native and a former employee of old Dacus Casket Company, West Memphis. He was a veteran of World War II. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Emma Norvell; a

Lafayette Pickett was the brother of
Mary E. Pickett Throgmorton, wife of Dr. James C. Throgmorton. Lafayette and Mary (Mollie) Pickett were two
of the children of Benire Pickett and Delilah Robertson of Jefferson Co, IL.
After moving to Ballard Co, KY in the late 1850's, Ben was killed and Delilah
remarried to a McDaniel. They subsequently migrated from Ballard Co, KY to
Crittenden Co, AR with their mother and step-father soon after the Civil War.

Additional information: Lafayette Pickett
was married in 1872 to Miss Sarah E. Goad, daughter of William and Amanda M.
Goad, early settlers here, having located in this neighborhood in 1856. Lafayette and Sarah Pickett were the parents
of five children; John H., Leroy, Della, Cora and Alice. Lafayette Pickett, by occupation a farmer and
blacksmith, was born in Jefferson Co., Ill. July 28, 1851. Both graves are
marked and located on the west side of the highway, across from the church.

E. Robbins, 56, of Earle died Tuesday, June 28, at his home. He was a farmer
and lifelong resident of Earle and Twist in Crittenden County. Survivors
include his wife, Linda E. Frost Robbins of the home; three sons, Rodney
Robbins and Christopher Robbins, both of Earle, and Randall Robbins of
Jonesboro; a daughter, Rachel Anderson of Colt; three sisters, Donna Carol
Winters and Fran Holloway, both of Jonesboro, and Brenda Robbins of Michigan;
and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Edward and
Georgia Louise Cossner Robbins and a brother. Funeral services will be at 10

Sarah F. Shannon, wife of S. A. Shannon, died April 24, 1940 in Crittenden
County, Arkansas. A record also exists for Gertrude Bell Shannon who died
February 11, 1946 in Crittenden County at the age of 50. A third record shows
that Edward Shannon died in Crittenden County on October 1, 1939.

PIONEER CITIZEN PASSES OVER THE RIVER
The death of Dr. James Chamberlain
Throgmorton, which sad event occurred last Sunday evening about 7:30 o’clock, marks
the passing away of one of
“But even now at my present age,
which is 78 years, many events long past and gone are yet fresh in the fading
folds of my memory. Forty-seven years on
the upper deck of an Arkansas pony, armed with a pill bag, battling not only
against disease, but buffalo gnats and mosquitoes, trudging through mud and slush
both day and night, often plunging my horse through dense forest, swimming
rivers and lakes to alleviate suffering humanity, has given me an advantage of
observing many things that I couldn’t otherwise have seen. This was so discouraging to me that had it
not been for the unbounded hospitalities of the Tyronza people, I no double
would have abandoned my outfit and struck for parts unknown.”
The
doctor engaged in the practice of medicine until the last few years. Dr. Throgmorton was known far and wide for
his unselfishness, for his devotion to his family, his loyalty to his friends
and love for his fellow-man, his interest in humanity and the improvement of
society. He was a man of large vision, a
keen insight, of broad and liberal views; he was a man of large intellectual
powers, sound judgment, a close observer, and original thinker, and possessed
an unusual faculty of getting at the heart of any subject in which he became
interested. In Freemasonry, the Doctor
was a great and shining light. It is our
understanding that he was a charger member of the Masonic Lodges at Wynne,
Crawfordsville and Earle. He had a
sublime faith in teachings of the fraternity and succeeded as few men do in
living up to its high and noble tenets of Freemasonry.
After a brief service at the
Throgmorton home Tuesday evening the remains were taken in charge by the
Masonic Lodge. The interment was at the

Station, Memphis, TN. She was buried in Gibson Bayou Cemetery, Earle, Arkansas.

Services
were held Thursday, October 17, 1957 at 2:00 p. m. for Mr. Pete Watson at the Gibson Bayou church with the Rev. Charles
Selby in charge of the service. Mr. Watson, who farmed near Earle for many
years, died October 15, 1957 at 3:15 a. m. in the Baptist Hospital in Memphis.
Mr. Watson was born in Earle and made his home near here until his retirement a
few years ago. At the time of his death
he was living at Rt. 2, Truman, Ark. He
leaves his wife, Mrs. Martha Watson, Truman, Ark.; 2 sons, Austin and Curtis; 4
daughters, Leona, Mrs. Vera Blevins, Mrs. Mary Ford, and Mrs. Gracey Peck; 1
brother, Bill Watson of Earle; 1 sister, Mrs. Maggie Gunn, Earle; 17
grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Burial was in Gibson Bayou Cemetery. Langford funeral home was in charge of
arrangements.

February 11, 1937 - Died September 23, 1940 at 11:40 PM. Father: Sherman Williams, Mother: Jewell
Hopkins Williams. Patsy Evelyn Williams
died in John Gaston Hospital from Septicomia following an injury to her right
hip suffered on September 19, 1940. Citizens Funeral Home of West Memphis
served as the undertaker. Her funeral, apparently, was held on September
28, 1940. There was no permanent headstone or marker for the grave.
To the best of my knowledge, Patsy was buried on the north side of Gibson Bayou
Church in what has been designated as Section E. She was the sister of Billy G. Williams and
Marie (Mrs. Larry Hughes) Williams.

Flora Mae
Winders, 80, retired
waitress, died Saturday at Crittenden Memorial Hospital in West Memphis. Services
will be at 2 p.m. today at Roller-Citizens Funeral Home in West Memphis with
burial in Gibson Bayou Cemetery. She was a member of Earle Baptist Church. Mrs.
Winders, the widow of Joe Winders, leaves two daughters, Bettye Orman of
Crawfordsville and Tammy Winders of West Memphis; seven sons, Bobby Winders of
Selmer, Tenn., Malcolm Winders of Wynne, Eddie Winders of West Memphis, Chuck
Winders of Cherry Valley, Kevin Winders of Marion, and Ricky Winders and Dickey
Winders, both of Earle; two sisters, Mamie Boggs of Cabot and Ollie Bell
Stivers of Beebe; a brother, Charles Riley of Memphis, 23 grandchildren and 27
great-grandchildren. The family requests that any memorials be sent to Earle
Baptist Church.

Joe M. Winders, 71, of Earle, a
retired employee of Stroupe Pest Control, died Wednesday. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. today at
Roller-Citizens Funeral Home of West Memphis.
Burial will be in Gibson Bayou Cemetery.
Survivors are seven sons, Bobby Winders, Rickey Winders, Dickey Winders,
Eddie Winders and Kevin Winders, all of Earle, Malcolm Winders of Wynne and
Chuck Winders of Cherry Valley; two daughters, Bettye W. Orman of
Crawfordsville and Tammy W. Webb of Parkin; 21 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Boss Winfrey of Earle died Sunday at
Veterans Administration Medical Center, Memphis. Services will be at 3:30 p.m. today at Gibson
Bayou Church, Earle. Burial will be in
Gibson Bayou Cemetery with Citizens Funeral Home in charge. Mr. Winfrey, 69, a retired Earle policeman,
was born in Arkansas. He was a veteran
of World War II and a Baptist. He leaves
his wife, Mrs. Mary Winfrey; a daughter Mrs. Shirley Forsythe, and a sister,
Mrs. Deallie Frazer of Earle.

Mrs. Mary Lee Winfrey of Earle died
Wednesday at Baptist Hospital, Memphis.
Services will be at noon Friday at Roller-Citizens Funeral Home's chapel
with burial in Gibson Bayou Cemetery, Earle.
Mrs. Winfrey, 70, a salesclerk, was a member of Earle Baptist Church and
had lived in Earle since 1939. She
leaves a daughter, Modine Swinford of West Memphis; two sons, O. D. Spencer and
Frank Spencer, both of Walnut Miss., three nephews and a niece.
Correction: In the obituary of Mrs. Mary Winfrey
published in the Evening Times on Thursday, survivors were incorrectly
identified. It should read: Mrs. Winfrey
leaves a sister, Modine Swinford of West Memphis; two brothers, O. D. Spencer
