Shawangunk Mountains . . . "View from the top of Granit (Rd) looking South East" by artist L. Wiles" (top). In 1709, Queen Anne awarded a large patent of land to several Ulster County men that included Teunis Jacobsen Klaarwater. Over time, the town of Shawangunk was formed due to an annexation from New Paltz. The Klaarwater family resided in the area of New Paltz and the Shawangunk Mountains.
