Merrovech VictorThe Franks began as a confederation of tribes (poss. Usipeti, Tencteri, Sugambri, Bructeri) living across the Rhine along the border of the Roman empire ca 200 C.E. Over time they absorbed other tribes such as the Amsivari, Batavi, Chamavi and Chatti.
First Century
Third CenturyThere were Salian (Salty) or West Franks and Ripuarian or Rhine Franks. Both groups later spread to northern Gaul and ultimately over most of today's France. They were Confederati, confederates but never subjects of Rome.
Late Fourth Century
Late Fifth CenturyFrom the Salian Franks came the Merovingian line of kings of which Clovis the Great brought most of West-central Europe under his rule. Gregory of Tours was the historian of the Franksas a Gallo-Roman he tended to write about them in a slightly distasteful tone. Not entirely unjustified as they could be ruthless. Patricide and fratricide were not uncommon.
