The Mehorter/Mahorter surname
According to George F. Black's book "The Surnames of Scotland" the Mehorter surname was originally from the Scottish surname MacChruiter. The name originated from the occupation of cruiteir, or harper, which was often a hereditary occupation in the Highlands. The modern Scottish form of the name, MacWhirter, is currently used in Ayreshire, the original home of the name. In North Ireland, the name became Mewhirter.
My Mehorter/Mahorter familes
My family can only be traced back to Ireland. Mary (Watt) Mehorter and her children came to the United States in the 1840's. The family used the Mehorter version of the surname, except for my great-great-great-grandfather, Samuel, and his descendants, who used the Mahorter version.
