Origins and Migrations of the
Stoneburner/Steinbrenner Family:
This family originated in Lachweiler and Mainhardt, near Schwaebisch
Hall in Wuerttemberg, Germany. They were Evangelisch or Lutheran and
probably immigrated, at least in part, due to religious tensions between
the Catholics and protestants in Germany at that time. Two brothers
immigrated together to Philadelphia, PA and quickly moved to Berks Co.,
PA. Within a few years, my family moved again, to the new German
settlement near Lovettsville, Loudoun Co., Virginia, where some members of
this family reside to this day. From the mid 1820's to early 1840's,
many families decided to move westward to Ohio, with a large percentage
moving to Guernsey County in particular, including mine. This
part of my family can become confusing. I believe that John Henry
Stoneburner (1794 - 1874) and Susannah Stoneburner (1799 - 1876) were
brother and sister, but I have not proven this one way or the other.
Their respective children (first cousins) married each other in 1850, at
which point it was legal in Ohio to do so. No mention of their
family relationship is made on their marriage certificate. |
