Origins and Migrations of the Steltz-Stilts Family:
Steltz is a German name. From my own research, I believe there to
be at least 2 main Steltz families from Germany, one that is Catholic and
resided around the area of Cologne and the second being Protestant
(Lutheran or Evangelisch) that came from Wuerttemberg in southwestern
Germany. Several members of each family immigrated at various
times. The Wuerttemberg family members probably came when the number
of immigrants from southwestern Germany was at its highest (1740s -
1760s). Others, mostly the Catholic ones, came during the mid to
latter 19th century.
I am not sure of the exact date of my family's immigration. It is
unknown if my earliest ancestor, Philip Steltz Sr. was born in Wuerttemberg
and immigrated over himself, or his parents had immigrated earlier.
He raised his large family right along the border between Pennsylvania
(York Co.) and Maryland (Baltimore Co.). His son Philip, and
probably other children of his, migrated to Richland Co., Ohio right
around the War of 1812. Most of the family remained there for a
number of years, but by 1870 seemed to have dispersed to neighboring
states and out West. |
