7. There was apparently debate about whether Susanna belonged to Edward of Weymouth or not.  The Bates Genealogy makes a note, "John J. Loud of the Weymouth Historical Society, claims that Susanna was not the daughter of Edward, but probably was of Charlestown.  The Charlestown record of marriages states that 'Nathaniel Blancher and Susanna Bates joyned in Marriage the 16th of the 10th (mo) 1658 before Capt. Huburtt, Commr.' . . .it is quite possible these were different people."   Even at the time of publication, the editor was not sure if Susanna was a daughter of Edward Bates of Weymouth, or belonged to another family entirely.  As far as I know, no further research into this question has been made.

Nicholson, Frederick J., The English Origin of Macuth1 (or Matthew) Pratt and Edward1 Bates of Weymouth, Mass., The American Genealogist, Vol. 65 (1990), pg. 95.  Susanna Bates and Nathaniel Blanchard were married 16 10m [Dec.] 1658.

13. Many, if not most sources confuse this John Bates, son of Edward Bates, with the father and son of the same names of Boston, MA.  John was baptized, at about 2 weeks of age, at First Church in Boston on 23 January 1641[/2].  Given the known date of birth of Increase Bates, it would be impossible for that John to be a son of Edward of Weymouth.  The date has sometimes been changed to 1642/43, due to the confusion surrounding the calendar before 1752 and to accommodate this discrepancy.  The other question arises; Why would Edward take his infant son all the way to Boston to be baptized, when he was a member of the Church of Weymouth?  It is currently believed that the John Bates, son of Edward of Boston, later married Mary Farwell of Chelmsford.  Not the John Bates of Weymouth.  No record of a marriage for John of Weymouth has been found.

Nicholson, Frederick J., The English Origin of Macuth1 (or Matthew) Pratt and Edward1 Bates of Weymouth, Mass., The American Genealogist, Vol. 65 (1990), pg. 95.

Bates, Samuel A., Genealogy of the Descendants of Edward Bates of Weymouth, Mass. (South Braintree, MA: Frank A. Bates, Publ., 1900), pg. 19.  Incorrectly gives baptismal date of 23 January 1642/43 and states he married Mary Farwell.  See above for explanation.

Chamberlain, George Walter, Genealogies of the Early Families of Weymouth, Massachusetts (Reprint: Baltimore, MD: Genealogical Publishing Company, Inc., 1984), pg. 22.   Incorrectly gives baptismal date of 23 January 1642/43 and states he married Mary Farwell.  See above for explanation.

Bates, Newton W., ed. The Bates Bulletin, The Bates Association, Series 4, Vol. 4, No. 2 (April 1926), pg. 154.  Incorrectly gives baptismal date of 23 January 1642/43 and states he married Mary Farwell.  See above for explanation.

14. Conflicting information is given about Prudence's birth and burial dates.  Chamberlain for example gives her birth date as 11 June 1639, while most other sources, including published vital records, give that date as her burial date.

Nicholson, Frederick J., The English Origin of Macuth1 (or Matthew) Pratt and Edward1 Bates of Weymouth, Mass., The American Genealogist, Vol. 65 (1990), pg. 95.

Chamberlain, George Walter, Genealogies of the Early Families of Weymouth, Massachusetts (Reprint: Baltimore, MD: Genealogical Publishing Company, Inc., 1984), pg. 22.  Gives date of 11 June 1639 as her birth date, not burial date.

20. Jehoshabeth's birth date is my estimation, based upon the birth dates of the other children.  She was called "impotent" [weak] in her father's will of 1683.  She never married and nothing more is known of her.

24. Elizabeth ? is often called Elizabeth Shaw, daughter of Dea. John Shaw of Weymouth.  However, John and Alice Shaw did have a daughter, Elizabeth born about 1655/56, but she married Joseph Poole of Weymouth.  No other John Shaw lived in Weymouth at that time.  Torrey believed her surname was possibly Edsell, but no proof was given.

Nicholson, Frederick J., The English Origin of Macuth1 (or Matthew) Pratt and Edward1 Bates of Weymouth, Mass., The American Genealogist, Vol. 65 (1990), pg. 95.  Name of wife is given as Elizabeth ---.
